Summary:
Responsible for the analysis of laboratory specimens both routine and specilized and the subsequent result reporting according to laboratory protocol and procedures.Assumes supervisory responsiblities when assigned

Responsibilities:
  • 1. Technical Duties
  • 1.1 Evaluates specimens for acceptability and accurately performs all testing using current methologies, instruments and manual method if applicable.
  • 1.2 Performs and documents maintenance/calibrations according to the department''s protocol
  • 1.3 Handles, reconstitutes, uses and stores all reagents in the appropriate manner
  • 1.4 Organizes workload for maximum efficiency and completes work assignments on time
  • 2. Quality
  • 2.1 Investigates and documents problems with unacceptable specimens
  • 2.2 Reports results for STATS, critical values and other categories of special request in the manner defined by hospital and laboratory policy
  • 2.3 Accuratey performs and evaluates QC results before releasing patient test results
  • 2.4 Appropriately notifies a supervisor of discrepant QC results
  • 3. Problem Solving
  • 3.1 Follows established guidelines for troubleshooting instrument, reagent or specimen problems
  • 3.2 Documents problem and steps taken in troubleshooting process
  • 3.3 Follows appropriate downtime procedures
  • 3.4 Immediately notifies supervisor or designee when unable to resolve a problem
  • 4. Regulation Compliance
  • 4.1 Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety
  • 4.2 Complies with established safety policies for chemical handling, storage and disposal
  • 4.3 Operates assigned equipment and performs all procedures in a safe manner as instructed
  • 4.4 Ensure a safe work environment by complying with established procedures
  • 5. Phlebotomy
  • 5.1 Accurately performs phlebotomy ( venipuncture, finger stick, heelstick) when requested or when required by work load demand
  • 5.2 Performs phlebotomy following age appropriate standards
  • 5.3 Appropriate knowledge of proper tube, urine and specimen collection procedures
  • 5.4 Properly stores all specimens
  • 6. People
  • 6.1 Participates in staff meetings, helps promote effective working relationships
  • 6.2 Maintains open communication using appropriate chain of command
  • 6.3 Interacts professionally with all members of the hospital staff
  • 6.4 Willingness to help co-worker and/or other lab sections if needed
  • 7. Customer Service
  • 7.1 Uses Patient/Family center values/Conducts all work activities with respect of the rights and wishes of patients, visitors and patients families
  • 7.2 Uses appropriate phone etiquette, answers the phone within three rings if possible
  • 7.3 Tries to resolve customer requests at the initial phone call before transfering to another section
  • 7.4 Calls and faxes all reports in a timely manner.

    EDUCATION:

    Bachelor?s Degree in Medical Technology or equivalent required.


    EXPERIENCE:

    Previous experience preferred


    LICENSURE:

    American Society of Clinical Pathologists certification (MT-ASCP) preferred

    ACCOUNTABILITY:

    Excellent written and verbal skills required. Ability to sit or stand for prolong periods of time. Ability to interact professionally with patients, visitors, physicians and hospital staff. Ability to work well under pressure and timelines.
