Summary:
Working collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team, the Milieu Counselor is assigned to and works under the direction of a Registered Nurse, participating in carrying out nursing interventions to provide patients with opportunities for learning and adaptive ways of coping. The Milieu Counselor works collaboratively with the licensed staff on the ongoing development of the milieu and activities that promote quality patient outcomes.
Responsibilities:
  • 1. Collaborates with the Registered Nurse in the application of principles of patient assessment.
  • 1.1 Demonstrates basic skills in collecting data by interviewing patient and identifying overt and covert problems as observed by supervisor.
  • 1.2 Makes pertinent observations and documents same in patient record as observed by supervisor.
  • 1.3 Gathers demographic data when admitting a patient as recorded in patient record and as observed by supervisor.
  • 1.4 Gathers information necessary (from patient/family) in order to complete psychiatric intake as observed by supervisor.
  • 1.5 Accurately identifies patient problems, communicates and documents in accordance with MTP as evidenced by random review of nursing notes by supervisor.
  • 1.6 Identifies expected outcomes of interventions accurately and documents same based on feedback of Registered Nurse and random review of documentation as observed by supervisor.
  • 1.7 Identifies and communicates changes in patient''s condition to resource nurse and documents as noted by random review of nursing notes by supervisor.
  • 2. Collaborates with the Registered Nurse in the application of principles for planning patient care.
  • 2.1 Collaborates with RN in problem identification for nursing care plans.
  • 2.2 Gives verbal input into patients nursing plan of care in collaboration with primary RN.
  • 2.3 Functions as a member of interdisciplinary treatment team by verbalizing observed changes in patients behavior and patients response to treatment and assists with comprehensive treatment planning as observed by supervisor.
  • 2.4 Collaborates with RN in planning patient care and setting realistic outcomes.
  • 2.5 Collaborates with RN in discharge planning as observed by supervisor and feedback from RN.
  • 2.6 Involves RN in planning and revising the care plan as observed by supervisor and feedback from RN.
  • 2.7 Assists Psych. Tech. I in planning patient care as required as observed by supervisor.
  • 3. Works with the Registered Nurse in the application of principles for planning patient care.
  • 3.1 Collaborates with RN in problem identification for nursing care plans as observed by supervisor.
  • 3.2 Gives verbal input into patients nursing plan of care in collaboration with primary RN as observed by supervisor.
  • 3.3 Functions as a member of interdisciplinary treatment team by verbalizing observed changes in patients behavior and patients response to treatment and assists with comprehensive treatment planning as observed by supervisor.
  • 3.4 Assists RN in planning patient care and setting realistic outcomes as observed by supervisor and feedback from primary clinician.
  • 3.5 Assists RN in discharge planning as observed by supervisor and feedback from supervisor.
  • 3.6 Involves RN in planning and revising the care plan as observed by supervisor and as indicated by feedback from RN.
  • 4. Works with the Registered Nurse in the application of principles of implementation of care.
  • 4.1 Bases care on specific identified patient needs as observed by supervisor.
  • 4.2 Participates in leading and co-leading programmed milieu groups activities under supervision of RN and CNS, and may co-lead psychotherapy group with staff executive as observed by supervisor.
  • 4.3 Practices and assists Psych Tech. I in maintaining infection control and environmental safety as observed by supervisor.
  • 4.4 Complies with policies and procedures in giving patient care as observed by supervisor.
  • 4.5 Organizes work for optimal use of time as evidenced by observation of supervisor.
  • 4.6 Demonstrates correct interventions specific to psychiatry as observed by supervisor.
  • 5. Works with the Registered Nurse in the application of principles of evaluation of patient care.
  • 5.1 Reviews patient condition with RN against expected outcomes.
  • 5.2 Measures patient responses to interventions based on expected outcomes.
  • 5.3 Evaluates results of counselling and teaching with RN and documents same.
  • 5.4 Participates in process and retrospective Quality Assurance activities as evidenced by supervisory review of documentation.
  • 6. Demonstrates accountability and responsibility for actions.
  • 6.1 Demonstrates compliance with legal, regulatory codes, and psychiatric policies.
  • 6.2 Uses correct resources for clarification of policies/procedures and assists Psych. Tech. I.
  • 6.3 Demonstrates interpersonal skills in professional relationships with health workers as evidenced by observation by supervisor.
  • 6.4 Demonstrates competency in managing patient problems and gives guidance to Psych. Tech. I as observed by supervisor.
  • 6.5 Assists RN in mentoring for Psych Tech I as observed by supervisor.
  • 6.6 Demonstrates reliable skills in new or unexpected situations as observed by supervisor.
  • 6.7 Meets personnel policy guidelines for punctuality as evidenced by time keeping records and as observed by supervisor.
  • 6.8 Relocates and rotates to meet patient care needs.
  • 6.9 Prioritizes patient care to complete assignments in a timely manner as observed by supervisor.
  • 6.10 Completes indirect patient assignment accurately in a timely manner as observed by supervisor.
  • 6.11 Participates in a minimum of 8 staff meetings per year as observed by supervisor.
  • 7. Demonstrates interest in self development.
  • 7.1 Identifies areas in performance needing improvement as evidenced by ongoing communication with supervisor.
  • 7.2 Sets specific realistic goals for self improvement as evidenced by documentation on individualized development plan.
  • 7.3 Reviews goals with evaluator quarterly or as directed as observed by supervisor.
  • 7.4 Completes goals in a designated timeframe.
  • 7.5 Develops skills applicable to the unit/division as observed by supervisor.
  • 7.6 Completes mandatory inservice education requirements.
  • 7.7 Accepts constructive criticism and responds by implementing corrective action as observed by supervisor.
  • 7.8 Participates in individual and group supervision with clinician as observed by supervisor.
  • 8. Completes non-therapeutic functions under the direction of MD, PA, APRN or RN.
  • 8.1 Remove medication(s) from the pneumatic tube system sent from the Pharmacy or Hospital Supply to the unit/patient care area.
  • 8.2 Immediately deliver the medication(s) from the pneumatic tube system to the appropriate Registered Nurse, Physician, Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, Physician Assistant or other appropriate licensed practitioner.
  • 8.3 As directed by a Registered Nurse, Physician, Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant or other appropriate licensed practitioner, remove IV solutions from the patient care area''s clean utility room and immediately deliver to the appropriate licensed practitioner.
  • 8.4 As directed by a Registered Nurse, Physician, Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant or other appropriate licensed practitioner, stock IV solutions in the patient care area''s clean utility room. Other information:
    EDUCATION:
    Bachelor's in Psychology or related field
    EXPERIENCE:
    Minimum two (2) years prior experience in Psychology and or related field, working with specialized populations such as adults, adolescents and or children and families with psychiatric illness.
    SPECIAL_SKILLS:
    Ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team to communicate and effectively deal with complex effectively charged situations and possess group facilitation and crisis management skills.

    PHYSICAL_DEMAND:
    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. They are also required to stand and walk. They must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities require include close vision, distance vision, color vision , peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
