Works collaboratively with the NM displaying leadership in management, clinical practice, performance improvement and staff development in accordance with the overall philosophy and goals of Patient Care Services. In the absence of the NM, he/she is responsible for the direction of patient care as well as patient care activities, unit operations, and staff functions. Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Responsibilities: 1. Demonstrates advanced skill in assessment of health care needs. 1.1 Demonstrates advanced skills in interviewing, observing and collecting healthcare data, performing a systems assessment and identifying patient support systems on admission according to hospital policy. 1.2 Utilizes multiple data sources, including current literature and/or nursing research, to anticipate potential physical, psychosocial, educational, and spiritual needs. 1.3 Identifies focuses/nursing diagnosis based upon skilled assessments of the complex patient''s needs. 1.4 Identifies expected patient outcomes based on ongoing assessment of patient health care needs. 1.5 Anticipates and accurately interprets clinical assessments, patient responses, and changes in the health status of routine and complex patients in an ongoing manner. 1.6 Demonstrates appropriate assessment of patient healthcare needs prior to the discharge. 1.7 Demonstrates appropriate assessment of patient on transfer/discharge from unit. 1.8 Supports the Nurse Case Manager plan of care in appropriate utilization of resources to facilitate patient''s progress through hospital system. 2. Demonstrates advanced skill in planning for patient health care needs. 2.1 Initiates Interdisciplinary Plan of Care (IPOC) utilizing information from initial assessment and guidelines for nursing care according to hospital policy. 2.2 Involves patient, family, significant others, and/or members of the health care team in planning of nursing care and setting realistic outcome. 2.3 Revises and individualizes clinical pathways to reflect changes in patient condition. 2.4 Demonstrates expertise in discharge planning, including the involvement of the patient, family/significant other, utilizing assessment, referral, and participation skills on the discharge planning team. 2.5 Involves patient, family, significant others, and members of the health care team in planning for patient and family education needs. 2.6 Guides other staff through the patient teaching process based on the patients/family''s educational needs. 2.7 Involves patient/family and members of the health care team in revising the IPOC. 3. Demonstrates advanced skills in implementation of care to meet patient care needs. 3.1 Prioritizes patient care based on assessments. 3.2 Appropriately delegates tasks to other members of the patient care team and assists others in the delegation process. 3.3 Provides patient care based on nursing diagnosis and physician orders. 3.4 Demonstrates competency in nursing skills & techniques used in caring for the complex patient. 3.5 Appropriately adapts clinical practice according to evidence based practice and national standards. 3.6 Consistently acts as a role model to staff in the implementation of new skills, policies and procedures. 3.7 Participates in and directs other caregivers in the provision of appropriate emergency interventions. 3.8 Delegates responsibilities to appropriate level of personnel, gives thorough directions and is available for clarification. 3.9 Demonstrates advanced knowledge of tests, procedures and participates in patient education of same. 3.10 Provides health education to patient, families and/or significant others. 4. Demonstrates advanced skill in evaluating care delivered. 4.1 Assess patient responses to healthcare interventions based on expected outcomes. 4.2 Reviews & evaluates patient condition with health care professionals against expected outcomes. 4.3 Evaluates results of health care counseling & teaching as evidenced by feedback from family and/or significant others. 4.4 Reports pertinent & concise information through internship report to members of the health care team. 4.5 Contributes to nursing performance improvement (PI) activities by assisting in the identification of nursing issues. 4.6 Provides appropriate staff education based upon PI results. 4.7 Actively participates in issue/problem resolution related to unit or hospital-wide PI team. 5. Documents outcomes appropirately, accurately, and consistenly. 5.1 Actively assists Nurse Manager with monthly/weekly documentation reviews. 6. Demonstrates advanced leadership skills. 6.1 Displays advanced knowledge and proficiency in the delivery of patient care and serves as resource for staff. 6.2 Executes all leadership responsibilities in the absence of the NM as determined by feedback from team members and review of appropriate forms (i.e. staffing, Kronos, etc.) 6.3 Demonstrates basic understanding of budgets. 6.4 Assists NM with performance evaluations for unit and assures evaluations are completed in a timely fashion. 6.5 Demonstrates judgement in problem solving through sound decision making and utilization of appropriate resources for consultation. 6.6 Utilizes skill and tact to influence and gain support and cooperation of staff members. 6.7 Actively participates in the growth and development of less qualified staff as reviewed with supervisor and documented in program development outlines. 6.8 Assists the NM in enhancing communications by attendance & participation at a minimum of 8 staff meetings/year. 6.9 Assists the NM with the interviewing process and selection of personnel for the unit. 6.10 Collaborates in the orientation of new staff members and supports the mentorship program. 6.11 Assists staff nurses in the development of appropriate individual clinical goals. 6.12 Provides constructive criticism to staff in an appropriate manner. 6.13 Initiates follow-up of unit based occurrences as indicated by supervisory review of documentation. 6.14 Supports unit philosophy goals through verbal and non-verbal methods. 6.15 Shares new developments in nursing practice with fellow staff members. 6.16 Accepts constructive criticism and responds by implementing corrective action. 6.17 Initiates self-evaluation of nursing practice through the independent development of appropriate goals. 6.18 Sets specific realistic goals and target dates for completion. Reviews and evaluates goals with Nurse Manager. 6.19 Participates in effecting change in the hospital through committee participation. 6.20 Demonstrates sensitivity to diverse cultural needs. 6.21 Identifies morale problems and intervenes as appropriate to keep the unit in equilibrium.
Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. Baccalaureate education - nursing major preferred. Degreed ANM must earn 10 contact hours annually. Non-degreed ANM must complete 6 credit hours towards a bachelor''s degree and 6 contact hours annually.
Minimum of 2 years experience as Registered Nurse in acute care setting
Licensed and a currently registered nurse in the State of Connecticut. All newly hired Registered Nurses must have a current BCLS certification or obtain within one month of hire.

The following performance standards MUST be met annually to maintain Assistant Nurse Manager status. This eval must contain a commentary on the leadership behaviors and skill mastery of the ANM as observed by the Nurse Manager.
1. Executes all leadership responsibilities in the absence of the NM, as determined by feedback from team members and review of appropriate forms (i.e. staffing, Kronos, etc.)
2 . Acts as a clinical role model in the coordination unit activities.
3 . Validates payroll sheets accurately and is able to edit punches in the Kronos system.
4 . Utilizes ResQ-RN to input staffing schedules and maintain changes in a timely manner.
5 . Assists the NM with the interviewing process and selection of personnel for the unit.
6 . Collaborates in the orientation of new staff members and supports the mentorship program.
7 . Maintains a global perspective of the hospital.
8 . Demonstrates basic understanding of budgets and is able to complete the budget justification report.
9 . Completes all PN1 evaluations for the unit or just their shift, as directed by manager.
10 . Mentor and educate staff in components of Hospital''s strategic plan.
The following professional development standards MUST be met annually to maintain Assistant Nurse Manager status. This eval must be accompanied by a copy of contact hours earned in the eval year, evidence of current certification (if achieved), transcripts of courses taken and documentation from the Leadership Certificate Program.
1. Degreed ANM must earn a minimum of 10 contact hours per year (75% management, 25% clinical) as indicated by continuing education attendance records.
2 . Actively participates in credentialling of staff to maintain 100% compliance to standards.
3 . Identifies morale problems and intervenes as appropriate to keep the unit in equilibrium.
Requires prolonged standing; walking; use of sight,hearing and touch; moving/lifting patients of varying weights.
