Summary:
Performs routine and special laboratory tests according to written protocols. Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Responsibilities:
  • 1. Accepts, prepares and assesses clinical specimens.
  • 1.1 Verifies the name on tube or specimen with requisition. Investigates and documents all findings related to discrepancies.
  • 1.2 Determines acceptability of specimen. Documents those rejected, and notifies unit to redraw.
  • 1.3 Prepares every specimen for testing and storage according to established procedures as observed by manager.
  • 2. Performs all testing and related calculations.
  • 2.1 Organizes workload, minimizing specimen processing delays and maximizing efficiency in processing tests as observed by manager.
  • 2.2 Responds to changes in work demands, as necessary; continually uses time to departmental advantage as observed by manager.
  • 2.3 Analyzes specimens with accuracy and precision following SOP''s as observed by manager
  • 2.4 Performs tests within established turnaround time as observed by section manager and with feedback from Hospital staff.
  • 2.5 Maintains equipment by performing maintenance and calibrations as observed by manager.
  • 2.6 Effectively troubleshoots technical and mechanical problems as observed by manager.
  • 2.7 Maintains an appropriate inventory of reagents and supplies.
  • 3. Evaluates and reports results.
  • 3.1 Demonstrates an appropriate level of understanding of scientific aspects of laboratory testing as observed by manager.
  • 3.2 Utilizes a broad laboratory base of knowledge to correlate data and reviews for unusual or unreasonable results according to established laboratory policies as observed by manager
  • 3.3 Communicates clearly test problems and critical results to appropriate hospital personnel as indicated by feedback from staff and manager observation.
  • 3.4 Recognizes and communicates to manager actual or potential problems in testing situations and instrumentation and takes an active part in constructive resolutions as noted by manager.
  • 3.5 Correlates laboratory methods, procedures and patient test results with age-specific population criteria, i.e. geriatrics, adults, pediatrics and neonates.
  • 3.6 Follows protocol for running controls, documents and accepting/verifying results according to established procedures as documented and observed by manager.
  • 4. Participates in additional activities that are necessary to satisfy department needs and requirements.
  • 4.1 Assists in implementing changes in existing or new procedures designated by departmental needs as indicated by feedback and as observed by manager.
  • 4.2 Acts as a learning resource for laboratory staff, students, and other hospital personnel as indicated by feedback and observed by manager.
  • 4.3 Willingly participates in other department activities for the benefit of the institution as indicted by feedback and as observed by manager.
  • 4.4 Attends professionally related continuing education 4 one hour CEU''s annually. (must be presented to manager at time of review. Other information: EDUCATION:
    BS or BA in any science (i.e. Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, etc.)
    EXPERIENCE:
    Experience in laboratory science preferred.
    LICENSURE:
    B.S.M.T. (ASCP) or equivalent certification.
    ACCOUNTABILITY:
    Must maintain registered status.
    Must be tested for colorblindness and be able to make necessary accommodations to perform testing accurately.
    Must manage the shift in the absence of a higher level of management.
    Must complete four CEUs annually.
    PHYSICAL_DEMAND:
    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. They are occasionally required to stand; walk; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. They must lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. They are occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
