Summary:
Consults with patients and other health professionals regarding incidence of congenital abnormalities, mental retardation and inherited disease and the implications for the patients and their families. Coordinates genetic services at Bridgeport Hospital and acts as a liaison with Yale Genetic Services. Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Responsibilities:
  • 1. Provides genetic counseling services as clinically indicated to referral patients.
  • 1.1 Determines the patients risk for genetic consequences and need for genetic testing with 100% accuracy as indicated by quarterly random review of files.
  • 1.2 Educates the patient with regards to his genetic risk factors according to established genetic practice with no exception.
  • 1.3 Secures appropriate testing arrangements for patients based upon assessed needs within hospital guidelines as indicated by physician feedback and supervisory observation.
  • 1.4 Facilitates exchange of patient information between Bridgeport Hospital and other genetic departments according to hospital policy as indicated by supervisory observation.
  • 1.5 Counsels patients with empathy and concern as indicated by feedback from clients and physicians and supervisor observation.
  • 2. Functions as a resource person to health care professionals and to the general public.
  • 2.1 Regularly prepares lectures and written materials to educate health care professionals as observed by supervisor.
  • 2.2 Effectively participates in community oriented programs to educate local population about genetics and the services offered at Bridgeport Hospital as observed by supervisor.
  • 2.3 Provides resource information to health care professionals and to the general public as requested as documented by a file of inquiries.
  • 3. Maintains current knowledge of genetic technology.
  • 3.1 Attends national and local in-service meetings to enhance knowledge base and to network with leading genetic professionals as documented by the employee continuing education record.
  • 3.2 Attends weekly conferences in the Yale Genetics department as indicated by monthly appointment book.
  • 4. Maintains appropriate patient records as mandated by hospital policy.
  • 4.1 Completes dictated report of patient contact within the week 80-85% of the time as indicated by random quarterly chart review.

    Other information:

    EDUCATION:
    Masters Degree required

    EXPERIENCE:
    Genetic Counselling experience preferred.

    SPECIAL_SKILLS:
    Board Certified Genetic Counselor or Board eligible by the American Board of Medical Genetics.

    PHYSICAL_DEMAND:
    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. They are occasionally required to stand and walk. They must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. They are occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
