Performs a variety of technical duties to ensure that the department operates in an efficient and accurate manner.

  • 1. Performs laboratory testing in a responsible efficient and accurate manner to ensure the reporting of proper results in a timely fashion.
  • 1.1 Follows established department procedures when performing testing 95% of the time as observed by supervisors. When appropriate applies age specific criteria in performance of duties.
    Exceeds: Frequently makes recommendations on how to enhance procedures.
  • 1.2 Performs assigned duties meeting departmental turnaround time standards 90% of the time as observed by supervisors.
    Exceeds: Without waiting to be asked, offers assistance to other staff when duties are complete.
  • 1.3 Assigns priorities to laboratory requests appropriately following established priority standards for timeliness as observed by supervisors.
    Exceeds: Using understanding and knowledge of clinical laboratory science, recognizes and reacts appropriately even to subtle clinical results which may alter the normal priority of a specimen.
  • 1.4 Performs multiple tasks simultaneously or changes from one task to another without documented error as observed by supervisors.
    Exceeds: When short staffed, will efficiently perform multiple work stations.
  • 1.5 Identifies and solves routine problems following established procedures 90% of the time as noted by supervisor.
    Exceeds: Is frequently able to independently resolve more complex problems which may not have established procedures.
  • 1.6 Maintains proper records and logs of all actions as required by procedures as observed by supervisor.
    Exceeds: Offers reminders to others to ensure that departmental records are accurate and up to date.
  • 1.7 Refers appropriate problems and keeps supervisors aware of all circumstances where lab results may require additional follow up by a supervisor or lab physician.
    Exceeds: While keeping supervisors informed, independently takes actions such as calling results, obtaining additional information, or recommending appropriate individual tests.
  • 1.8 Is able to efficiently use both the Laboratory Information System and the Hospital Information System to enter or retrieve lab data as required.
  • 1.9 Leaves work areas clean and well stocked at end of shift. Keeps supervisor informed of any shortages of supplies or reagents in ample time for ordering.
    Exceeds: Consistently volunteers to make reagents and assist with inventory control when time permits.
  • 2. Performs quality control testing and maintains accurate and legible records so that test accuracy is assured and that all required records are accurate and up to date.
  • 2.1 Performs and documents required quality control testing following established procedures as observed by supervisor.
    Exceeds: When appropriate recommends changes to enhance QC procedures and policies.
  • 2.2 Interprets and takes proper actions following established procedures to QC results outside of acceptable ranges as observed by supervisor.
    Exceeds: Identifies subtle problems in QC testing and brings to supervisor''s attention even before QC results may actually be unacceptable.
  • 2.3 Maintains accurate and legible records of all QC testing and corrective action taken as required by established procedures.
  • 2.4 Keeps supervisors informed of all corrective action taken and appropriately refers more complex problems to supervisors in a timely and responsible manner.
    Exceeds: Recommends to supervisor appropriate additional actions to take when established procedures are unable to resolve a problem.
  • 3. Possesses an understanding of the technical and medical basis of testing to ensure the proper communication and performance of lab tests.
  • 3.1 As requested, can explain the basic principles of laboratory tests they perform as observed by supervisors.
    Exceeds: Regularly uses their understanding of testing principles to troubleshoot problems in testing due to reagent failure or interfering substances.
  • 3.2 As requested, can explain clinical significance of laboratory tests they perform.
    Exceeds: Regularly uses their understanding of clinical significance to recommend additional testing or communicate significant findings to appropriate personnel.
  • 3.3 As requested, instructs medical technology students, other medical technologists, or medical staff in the performance of laboratory tests as observed by supervisors.
    Exceeds: Takes an active interest in teaching. Assists supervisors in planning teaching sessions and provides regular feedback on student abilities.
  • 4. Demonstrates a professional attitude and approach to all area of work, attempts to work well with others, and demonstrates a commitment to personal career growth in Medical Technology.
  • 4.1 Employee is ready to work at the start of assigned shifts.
    Exceeds: Frequently is able to accommodate unusual situations by coming in early of remaining late even when overtime is not involved.
  • 4.2 Emotional maturity is exhibited on a consistent basis, is able to control anger in difficult situations and remains calm during stressful occasions.
    Exceeds: Actively resolves problems in a manner which avoids difficult situations from occurring.
  • 4.3 Demonstrates an ability to work with co-workers and understands and tolerates differences in individuals; shows an ability to work as a member of the team.

  • 4.4 Demonstrates a positive approach to learning new concepts, responsibilities and procedures. Readily adapts to changes in procedures and policies.
    Exceeds: Volunteers to assist with new procedures and equipment. Makes recommendations for changes in policies and/or procedures to allow for more efficient operations.
  • 4.5 Participates in continuing education (CE) by participating in and documenting at least twelve Continuing Education Units during the year.

    Other information:


    Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology or equivalent with MT (ASCP) certification or equivalent or eligibility.


    One (1) to two (2) years'' experience in an accredited Clinical Laboratory preferred.


    Working knowledge of equipment, instrumentation, and materials used in a Clinical Laboratory.

    Performs a variety of routine tests and procedures, prepares and standardizes reagents, and performs routine quality control.

    Prepare reports of such tests in a timely fashion and report the findings to the proper individuals. Performs duties in accordance with established Clinical Laboratory standards.
    Individuals within this role having 6 years'' experience with (Bachelor''s Degree), 4 years'' experience with (Master''s Degree), 2 years'' experience with (PhD), may be requested to provide New York State General Supervisor coverage.
