Summary:
Under the direction of the Laboratory Facility and Medical Directors and Manager, and the Stem Cell Specialist, demonstrates ability to perform a wide variety of routine and some special technical procedures in the Stem Cell Laboratory. Demonstrates good time management and organizational skills. Interprets data based on knowledge and experience. Evaluates, troubleshoots and solves routine problems. Participates in quality control, quality assurance, and equipment maintenance programs in the laboratory.
Responsibilities:
  • 1. Technical Competency: demonstrates technical competency in the performance of routine and complex progenitor cell processing, and quality control.
  • 1.1 Performs routine processing and cryopreservation of hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPC) according to SOP, using sterile technique and following Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) at all times. Competency is evaluated through direct observation and record review by the stem cell specialist.
  • 1.2 Recognizes unique processing requirements for each stem cell product collected and performs such processing competently and carefully.
  • 1.3 Records data on HPC processing accurately and completely as the procedure is taking place.
  • 1.4 Performs thawing of cryopreserved HPCs according to SOP, using aseptic technique. Completes required documentation. Competency is evaluated through direct observation and record review by the stem cell specialist.
  • 1.5 Demonstrates good time management in the performance of assigned tasks while maintaining a high level of quality. Assesses the workload and seeks assistance or takes on additional work as needed.
  • 1.6 Carries out immunological manipulations of Peripheral Blood Stem Cell (PBSC) and Bone Marrow (BM) harvests from patients for the purpose of purifying stem cells and eliminating tumor cells, in conjunction with clinical studies.
  • 1.7 Follows protocol branch points that depend on previous outcomes.
  • 1.8 Appropriately documents problems within two (2) days or
  • 1.9 unexpected deviations when encountered
  • 1.10 Troubleshoots all problems with procedures or equipment in the stem cell processing laboratory and notifies Medical Director of Stem Cell processing when cannot resolve problem independently.
  • 1.11 Sends out appropriate tests, obtains test results, interprets test results, and notifies Blood Bank physician of abnormal results in a timely manner.
  • 1.12 Keeps work area neat, well-stocked, and disinfected after use
  • 2. Recordkeeping, Documentation, and Computer Skills: Provides for accurate documentation and reporting of results to ensure quality of patient care by demonstrating good computer and recordkeeping skills.
  • 2.1 Clearly, legibly, and accurately completes any hand written record. Corrects handwriting mistakes according to standards.
  • 2.2 Enters information and test results in the computer system accurately and thoroughly. Brings data entry errors to the attention of a supervisor for correction.
  • 2.3 Maintains accurate records of clinical laboratory data on stem cell products. Produces required reports and statistical information 90% of the time.
  • 2.4 Maintains accurate records of clinical laboratory data on patients following stem cell infusion. Produces required reports and statistical information 90% of the time.
  • 2.5 Analyzes data for trends and deviations, and reports to supervisor regarding unexpected findings. Produces required reports and statistical information 90% of the time.
  • 2.6 Keeps current with computer related skills needed for the Stem Cell Laboratory
  • 2.7 Accesses all Hospital computer systems only for information that is work-related.
  • 2.8 Maintains confidentiality of all patient related data
  • 2.9 Handles phone inquiries and requests for results in a courteous and professional manner, following Department of Laboratory Medicine customer service guidelines. Knows when a call should be referred to a supervisor or physician.
  • 3. Independence/Initiative: Demonstrates independent thinking and action. Demonstrates ability to evaluate, troubleshoot, and problem solve.
  • 3.1 Recognizes situations that are inconsistent with policy/ procedure or quality patient care. Documents all occurrences on the Variance Report form and performs immediate corrective action as necessary. Makes recommendations for improvements that can be made as a result of the occurrence.
  • 3.2 Recognizes the operational needs of the Stem Cell Laboratory outside of own work assignment. Offers assistance to others when own assignments are completed.
  • 3.3 Assists in the evaluation of new products, procedures or equipment that would benefit the Stem Cell Laboratory by reducing costs, increasing productivity or improving quality. Makes recommendations for their implementation into the workflow.
  • 3.4 Participates in teaching/orientation activities for new employees, students, residents and others. Communicates effectively and maintains a positive, respectful, interpersonal relationship with learners.
  • 4. Professionalism: Demonstrates professionalism at all times both in attitude and in approach to all work activities. Demonstrates a commitment to personal career growth in the field of Laboratory Medicine/ Blood Banking/ HPC Therapy.
  • 4.1 Ensures continued expertise and knowledge by attaining a minimum of 5 continuing education points each year, as defined in the Continuing Education SOP.
  • 4.2 Demonstrates by example the importance of teamwork. Fosters a team approach to completing work and offers to help others. Maintains positive relationships with co-workers, supervisors, physicians and hospital staff.
  • 4.3 Recognizes and demonstrates that the telephones are for business use only; restricts personal use for emergencies only.
  • 4.4 Adheres to hospital policies concerning time limitation for break/lunch. Demonstrates flexibility in scheduling so that the laboratory is adequately covered.
  • 4.5 Takes ownership and responsibility for issues. Accepts professional direction as a way to improve performance.
    Other information:

    EDUCATION:
    BS Degree in a Biological Science or equivalent required.
    EXPERIENCE:
    One to two years of relavent clinical or research laboratory experience required. Previous laboratory experience in the cell therapy field preferred.

    SPECIAL SKILLS:
    Knowledge of stem cell regulation and accreditation requirements preferred. Familiarity with personal computer (Excel, Word) desired. Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills to interact with clinical trial sponsors and other hospital staff required. Must have excellent organizational skills.
