Under the supervision of the Diagnostic Radiology Manager and/or Assistant Chief Technologist, performs a wide variety of technical and professional duties utilizing complex imaging equipment to produce quality CT images as requested for subsequent interpretation by the radiologist. All duties are performed according to departmental and organizational policies and procedures. Promotes service excellence in all interactions as outlined in the Key Behaviors in the YNHH Core Success Factors. To meet the staffing needs of the department, as necessary, CT staff may be assigned at any of the YNHH CT locations, regardless of your regularly assigned work location.
Responsibilities: 1. High Reliability Organization (HRO) and work practices as documented with scanning errors. 1.1 Uses technical skill and knowledge of cross-section anatomy to perform CT exams using appropriate imaging protocols, independently and efficiently. . 1.2 Reviews requisitions/ EMR orders, contrast questionnaires and prescribed scan protocols to ensure that each patient is scanned appropriately, without need for repeat studies due to technologist error. 1.3 Identifies patients accurately 100% of the time using designated scripts for communication as directed according to departmental policy as observed by supervisor or other hospital staff. 1.4 Reports and documents designated quality assurance responsibilities such as:
o Patient contrast reactions or extravasations
o Patient injuries or complaints
o Equipment malfunctions
o Patient radiation dose
o Procedure time-out
o Missing or inappropriate exam requisitions
o Enters initials into scanner as per ACR guidelines 2. Actively participates in workflow activities in order to ensure the goals of the department are met and runs efficiently. 2.1 Assists CSA, schedulers, PFAS staff, physicians, secretaries, nursing, etc with scheduling, obtaining requisitions or pre-authorization, patient preparation instructions, and other exam-related communications. 2.2 Has minimal inactive scanner time between patients in order to maximize the section''s efficiency and minimize patient delays as observed by supervisor or physician. 2.3 Assists the physician/radiologist as needed with CT guided medical procedures. 2.4 Proactively assumes responsibility to monitor patient exam worklist i.e. reviews lab values, patient allergies, pregnancy test, obtains IV access, orders and sends contrast to patient area, acquires protocols for exams within 15 mins of the exam order. 2.5 Operates CT scanners using age and dose appropriate protocols and related medical equipment necessary to produce quality CT images for diagnosis or treatment safely and efficiently. 3. Performs quality and compassionate patient care in order to ensure patient cooperation, safety and satisfaction. 3.1 Thoroughly explains the procedure and ensures patient physical and emotional comfort as observed by supervisor/manager or noted by patient comments or surveys. 3.2 Is attentive to patient care needs and expediently calls for nursing and/or physician medical support, as required, as evidenced by incident reports and employee, physician and nursing input. 3.3 Is attentive and responsive to the concerns of all patients and their families, as noted by supervisor/manager, and evidenced by PG patient survey comments. 3.4 Ensures a Clean & Safe environment through daily exam room and equipment inspections. Recognizes and performs tasks needed to foster good patient care such as room preparation, restocking supplies, and offering assistance to others when possible on a daily basis. 3.5 Performs IV insertion using aseptic technique and administers IV or Oral contrast media under the
direction of a radiologist. 4. Performs various record keeping, communication and customer service functions in order to ensure goals of the department are met and operations run efficiently. 4.1 Relays pertinent information to radiologists or other technical staff to minimize errors due to lack of communication, especially during change of shift, as noted by supervisor. 4.2 Performs designated EMR tasks, such as editing /completing exams appropriately, entering supply charges, scanning reqs./forms into Document Management, etc. to ensure the accuracy of patient billing and medical record documentation in accordance with department policy. 4.3 Accurately retrieves and /or enters patient data into the CT Scanner, EMR, PACS, Transport Tracking as observed by supervisor or review of audit reports. 4.4 Ascertains CT image quality and transmission of all images to the Synapse patient folder upon completion of each patient scan for subsequent review and interpretation by the radiologist in accordance with departmental policy. 5. Operates CT scanners using age and dose appropriate protocols and related medical equipment necessary to produce quality CT images for diagnosis or treatment safely and efficiently. 5.1 Performs tube warm up and calibrations daily and when prompted as described in the department quality assurance program and documented by the CT scanner event log. 5.2 Demonstrates ability to use independent judgment during equipment difficulties to accurately log technical problems, contact service engineer, or call for technical support as appropriate. Troubleshoots equipment issues prior to calling service. 5.3 Communicates concerns to supervisor/manager along with co-workers to ensure a smooth workflow with minimal downtime. 6. Participates in various teaching, learning, and research opportunities in order to further professional knowledge and expertise or to assist in expanding the knowledge of others. 6.1 Is receptive to teaching CT technologists, student technologists, radiology residents and fellows, as observed by supervisor or input from staff or students. 6.2 Keeps current with mandated hospital Healthstream training modules, CPR, and other department required training programs each year, as recorded by supervisor/manager 6.3 Maintains active professional registration/certification and state licensure and provides documentation as recorded by supervisor/manager. 6.4 Keeps current of technical field through reading reference journals and materials or in-services provided by department as observed by supervisor. 6.5 Participation in at least one staff meeting per month and/or reads minutes from meetings to keep current on departmental procedures and protocols. 6.6 Reviews interoffice mail (intranet) on a weekly basis. 7. To enhance the patient experience in Diagnostic Radiology, all staff will be responsible to achieve patient satisfaction scores set by the department on the Test & Treatment section of our Press Ganey Survey. 7.1 Staff will present themselves in a friendly and courteous manner; Staff will identify themselves and their role while encouraging a Patient and Family Center experience. 7.2 Staff will fully explain procedure and ask if the patient has any additional questions about the procedure. 7.3 Staff will address any comfort issues a patient may have prior to starting procedure. 7.4 Staff will thank patient once procedure is completed and ask the patient if they have any additional questions. 7.5 Staff must meet the above goals and fiscal year threshold value, which was last fiscal year actual for a 2 rating on review 7.6 Staff must meet the above goals and exceed fiscal year threshold value by + 0.2 for a rating of 3 on review. 7.7 Staff must meet the above goals and exceed fiscal year threshold value by + 0.4 for a rating of 4 on review.
Graduation from an A.M.A. approved Radiologic Technology program. AS degree required, BS degree preferred.
One (1) to three (3) years of CT, experience with routine imaging techniques. Demonstrated technical skills to meet entry level standards of routine CT imaging.
RT(R) certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), required. CT certification preferred. Connecticut State License required. CPR Certification required.
Proficient in advanced CT imaging techniques, above average knowledge of cross section anatomy, computer/Pacs applications, and good organizational and communication / customer service skills.
Must meet the performance expectations as defined in the CT Technologist 1 position description. Performance and competency will be assessed continually and reviewed annually by supervisor / manager. Any areas that are determined to be unsatisfactory will require additional training and re-evaluation within 90 days.
Demonstrates planning and decision making skills necessary to manage a patient schedule with minimal assistance and to utilize CT scanners efficiently. Active participant in clinical research, teaching, and training of new technical staff and students.
Must be able to lift a minimum of 40 pounds to assist with patient transfers.
