Under the general direction of the Patient Service Manager, and/or the Clinical Nurse, performs all duties that support patient care. These duties include direct and indirect patient care activities which are essential to providing comprehensive care to patients. Performs assigned duties within an appropriate timeframe. Participates as a team member, contributing to a positive work environment. Demonstrates an outstanding commitment to excellent customer service, learning and skill development.

Responsibilities: 1. Performs technical duties which contribute to safe, effective, and efficient patient care delivery. 1.1 Checks, maintains, and assures proper working condition of all suction units in any area deemed appropriate. 1.2 All patient care responsibilities will be performed consistent with population-specific criteria. 1.3 Inspects and maintains the working condition of patient care equipment. 1.4 During emergencies, supports the nursing staff in the procurement of equipment and supplies, delivery of laboratory specimens, blood bank pick-ups, and other general emergency procedures. 1.5 Understands and applies the principles of aseptic technique at all times. Assists in the opening of sterile supplies for surgical procedures when applicable. 1.6 Checks for outdates sterile supplies, removes them from use, and assures proper replacement in conjunction with the Clinical Nurse. 1.7 Operates sterilization equipment. 2. Assists the Clinical Nurse in providing patient care. 2.1 Provides comfort measures such as blankets, dimming lights, and positioning. 2.2 Assists with the collection of specimens during procedures and delivery of specimens to appropriate labs as needed. 2.3 Transports patients via wheel chair, stretcher, and/or ambulation, always verifying the correct patient using the YNHH approved identifiers (patient name, MRUN, band or birth date) and introducing self to patient and family. 2.4 Ensures a safe environment, with special consideration in the use of 02, side rails, restraints, and electrical equipment. 2.5 In collaboration with the Clinical Nurse, reviews schedule, plans for equipment and supplies, and participates in problem-solving activities (i.e., towers, x-rays, beds, etc). 2.6 Assists with lifting, transferring, turning and positioning the patient. 2.7 Demonstrates an uncompromising commitment to patient safety, and participates in quality/performance improvement initiatives as assigned. 3. Performs responsibilities which contribute to the efficient opeation of the GI Procedure Center. Participates in keeping the environment clean and organized. 3.1 Initiates patient transport immediately upon request. 3.2 Verifies patient identity by ID bracelet, (using the YNHH approved patient identifiers), verbal acknowledgment, and patient chart and transports patient with medical record safely to the GI Procedure Center and other designated areas as directed. 3.3 Initiates actions to correct inadequate supplies, faulty equipment, and environmental problems and informs the Patient Service Manager or designated charge nurse. 3.4 Keeps the equipment and equipment parts cleaned, organized and in proper working order. 3.5 Keeps the environment clean and organized 3.6 Assists with the preparation and turnover of rooms to ensure cleanliness and efficiency. 3.7 Assists as cases are breaking to expedite efficient room turnover by assisting with cleaning of the room, transportation of the patient, opening sterile supplies, and obtaining appropriate equipment. 3.8 Places case cart and needed equipment outside of room for to-follow cases. 3.9 Follows SGNA recommended practices for care of equipment, endoscopes and accessories. 3.10 Handles equipment with care observing precautions to prevent damage due to careless handling. 3.11 Cleans, decontaminates, inspects, and maintains all endoscopic equipment according to design and type, following written instructions. 3.12 Monitors and documents disinfectant concentration daily to ensure disinfectant effectiveness. 3.13 Maintains daily records of equipment repairs as directed and within scope of responsibility. 3.14 Prepares items for steam and ETO sterilization and checks items returned from CSS daily to reduce loss. 3.15 Adheres to universal precautions and observes principles of clean technique when handling equipment. 3.16 Anticipates equipment needs for scheduled procedures. 4. Maintains competency in areas of responsibility and participates in unit activities that promote a cohesive staff group. 4.1 Completes on line mandatory continuing education classes as required. Ensures annual PPD is current. 4.2 Participates in unit and/or service-related continuing education classes. 4.3 Attends and actively participates in staff meetings. If unable to attend, accepts responsibility for viewing video, reading minutes and signing appropriate sheet. 4.4 Supports an environment that values learning. 4.5 Participates as a team member and contributes to the cohesiveness of the department to ensure the maintenance of a positive working environment. 4.6 Participates as a team member by returning pages within five (5) minutes of initiation and informs control desk of return from any assigned duty upon completion. 4.7 Demonstrates sensitivity to cultural, racial, and ethnic diversity in verbal and non-verbal communication. 4.8 Assumes responsibility for continued learning and skill development by discussing and working on setting performance goals. Seeks supervision from Clinical Nurse, charge nurse, or other appropriate individuals as identified. 4.9 Utilizes computers as related to job role.
High School graduate or equivalent. PCA or other equivalent, i.e., Medical Assistant and/or Phlebotomy Technician desirable. Additional experience preferred will be specified depending on placement.
Two (2) to three (3) years of patient care setting, or education as stated above. All candidates must successfully complete the GI Competency Based Training and Practicum and unit specific competencies.
Ability to read, write, and perform basic math. All duties require some pushing, pulling, bending and standing. Must be able to read instructional materials and labels. Must be able to participate as a member of the patient care team. Must display the ability to take directions.
Performs duties under direction of an RN. Provides assistance to nurses, physicians, clerical staff, and security personnel in the GI Procedure Center area. Responsible for maintaining a safe and clean environment, including maintenance of equipment. Accountable for following all departmental and hospital policies and procedures.
Responds to the needs of the patient and the patient care team. Opens sterile supplies, and trouble shoots equipment. Prioritizes responsibilities throughout shift, working in collaboration with the RN.
Must be able to life a minimum of 40 pounds. Ability to perform tasks of physical endurance and dexterity as required. Consistent use of proper body mechanics.
