Performs in a novice role and because of limited or lack of clinical experience, requires close supervision by a mentor or experienced personnel. He/she is an integral member of the surgical team who works closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel in delivering patient care and assumes supervised responsibilities before, during, and after surgery. Responsibilities include but are not limited to preparing the operating room and instruments, equipment, and supplies that will be needed; positioning and preparing the patient for surgery; and passing instruments, sponges, and sutures to the surgeon. Responsibilities: 1. Demonstrates patient care concepts. 1.1. Verifies patient's identity with a registered nurse. 1.2. Collaborates with team members in providing a safe, and supportive environment for the patient. 1.3. Performs patient care responsibilities consistent with age-specific criteria under the supervision of a registered nurse. 1.4. Respects the rights of health care consumers by ensuring privacy and confidentiality. 1.5. Performs shaving, clipping and prepping as required under the direction of a registered nurse. 1.6. Recognizes the physical, spiritual, and psychological needs of the patient/family. 2. Demonstrates the application of the principles of asepsis and disinfection in a knowledgeable manner in the care of the supplies, instruments, and the environment. 2.1. Identifies the principles of sterile technique and applies these techniques when assisting each operative procedure. 2.2. Demonstrates a surgical conscience of all times. 2.3. Prepares items/instruments for sterilization, receives, sorts decontaminate, cleans all surgical items including sterilizers and ultrasonic cleaners applying the correct techniques of disinfection and sterilization. After sterilization of each load, verifies machine parameters, load # and initials tape read out. Notifies supervisor immediately if results is inadequate and reprocesses load if necessary. 2.4. Assembles and wraps instrument trays; stamps, dates, stores and rotates items, and issues sterile and unsterile items. 2.5. Uses and evaluates sterilizers and completes all required documentation (spores) in accordance with unit policy. 2.6. Verifies exposure to sterilization process and integrity of all instruments, equipment needed, sterile packaging, and opens appropriate supplies. 2.7. Reports defective material or equipment to specialty team coordinators. 2.8. Follows the appropriate dress code according to unit policy. 2.9. Utilizes inventory and assignment information and interprets needs for single instruments, according to processing need. 2.10. Performs inspection of all instruments for proper conditions and operation, replacing or lubricating as needed. 2.11. Performs daily diagnostics on the System 1E Steris machine before any instrument loads. 2.12. Loads all instruments consistently in same direction and does not overload tray. 3. Demonstrates surgical case presentation skills. 3.1. Applies knowledge of normal and pathological anatomy and physiology to individualize patient care. 3.2. Assures the physical preparation of the operating rooms. 3.3. Assists in selecting supplies and equipment for surgical procedures. 3.4. Assists in preparing OR bed and set up of specialty equipment/tables. 3.5. Identifies the basic surgical instruments by type, function, and name, 3.6. Opens sterile supplies using sterile technique. 3.7. Assists in placing and positioning the patient on the operating room table for all surgical procedures under the direction of a registered nurse. 3.8. Identifies common sponges and dressings and their use in specific surgical procedure. 3.9. Identifies suture materials and stapling devices and applies the proper methods of handling such devices. 3.10. Identifies the appropriate types of accessory equipment for specific surgical procedures. 3.11. Applies draping materials for specific surgical procedures under the direction of a registered nurse. 3.12. Identifies and reports to designated personnel conditions that may exist and could negatively affect the health, safety, and well-being of patients or personnel. 4. Demonstrates the role of a scrub person. 4.1. Follows principles of correct hand scrub, gown, and gloves others, and ties and secures sterile gowns; completes scrub protocol before each case according to OR standards. 4.2. Ensures safety of patient and surgical team by exercising aseptic technique and preventing hazards related to the environment and the use of equipment. 4.3. Demonstrates knowledge of the step-by-step procedures of specific surgical procedures. 4.4. Independently scrubs for laparoscopic, endoscopic procedures; scrubs for minimally complex procedures within cluster and maintains core competencies outside of cluster. 4.5. Prepares surgical field with all sterile supplies needed in accordance with preference lists. 4.6. Passes correct instrumentation, supplies, and suture as needed in accordance with preference lists. 4.7. Holds retractors and selected instruments and applies electrosurgery to clamps on bleeders as directed by the surgeon. 4.8. Follows established policy and procedure for all counts (i.e., sponges, needles and instruments) and informs the surgeon and the circulating nurse of outcome. 4.9. Continually monitors and reports any breaks in aseptic technique to circulating nurse and takes immediate/appropriate action. 4.10. Ascertains that all specimens are properly identified and given to circulator. 5. Demonstrates the role of the assisting circulator. 5.1. Prepares the operative site for surgery under the direction of a registered nurse and assists the other members of the surgical team as needed; reports status of procedure to relief team. 5.2. Performs counts with the scrub person and follows established policy and procedures for all counts. 5.3. Monitors and controls the surgical environment as indicated in unit policy and procedure under the direction of a registered nurse. 5.4. Transports post-op patients to the patient care unit after local procedures or as required by the unit and/or assists the registered nurse or anesthesia personnel in transporting post-op patients to the PACU or as required by unit. 5.5. Adheres to standard precaution guidelines when handling/transporting multiple specimens, cultures, blood and body fluids to the laboratory. 5.6. Assists in preparing next assignment after completing a case. 5.7. Follows appropriate post-operative routines. 5.8. Documents the intra-operative care of the patient. 6. Demonstrates the accountability as a health care professional. 6.1. Recognizes that each practitioner is individually responsible for his/her actions. 6.2. Recognizes the important of teamwork, consideration, and cooperation within the operating room. 6.3. Performs OR sanitation as needed and assists in restocking of the rooms with supplies leaving the rooms prepared for use. 6.4. Breaks down sterile field assuring that instruments, supplies and equipment are placed in proper location; assists in room break down bagging garbage, removes debris from floors, bagging linens and wipes down surgical and OR tables. 6.5. Identifies and labels any broken or malfunctioning instruments or equipment and follows through with appropriate person. 6.6. Recognizes legal and policy limits of individual responsibility. 6.7. Recognizes the need to expand knowledge through journal readings, inservice education and other avenues of learning; participates in regular scheduled inservices; reads all minutes; policies and procedures and other material posted on unit. 6.8. Promotes positive work relationships through teamwork; demonstrates tact and understanding when interacting with patients, staff members, surgeons, anesthesia personnel and other members of the surgical team. 7. Completes non-therapeutic functions under the direction of MD, PA, APRN or RN. 7.1. Remove medication(s) from the pneumatic tube system sent from the Pharmacy or Hospital Supply to the unit/patient care area. 7.2. Immediately deliver the medication(s) from the pneumatic tube system to the appropriate Registered Nurse, Physician, Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, Physician Assistant or other appropriate licensed practitioner. 7.3. As directed by a Registered Nurse, Physician, Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant or other appropriate licensed practitioner, remove IV solutions from the patient care area's clean utility room and immediately deliver to the appropriate licensed practitioner. 7.4. As directed by a Registered Nurse, Physician, Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant or other appropriate licensed practitioner, stock IV solutions in the patient care area's clean utility room. 8. Loads all instrument consistently in same direction and does not overload trays. 9. Spray all instrumentation with an enzymatic solution end of case. 10. Utilizes inventory and assignment information and interprets needs for single instruments, according to processing need.
Graduate of CAAHEP accredited surgical technology program or formal program as defined by the LCCST.
Competent and physical able to perform all duties in Surgical Tech.
Graduate of a Certified Surgical Technology Program. Must be certified or obtain certification within 1 year of employment.
Demonstrates knowledge of all aspects of the surgical department and works independently on minor or minimally complex cases., Utilizes the recommended guidelines as set forth in the Association of Surgical Technologist Standards of Practice in accomplishing job related responsibilities.
SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMAND: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; stoop, kneel, or crouch; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk and hear. They may occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
