Summary:
Supervises technical personnel in specimen processing, test analysis, and reporting of test results. Performs tests requiring special scientific skills. Oversees the performance of laboratory procedures in the absence of the Histology Manager and Section Chief. Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Responsibilities:
  • 1. Provides staff with professional and administrative supervision.
  • 1.1 Assigns work flow based on departmental needs and in conjunction with the clinical chief as observed by Histology Manager and feedback from clinical chief.
  • 1.2 Effectively schedules the work force based upon resources available as observed by Histology Manager.
  • 1.3 Operates department within budget and appreciates departmental fiscal needs as observed by Histology Manager.
  • 1.4 Performs or provides technical assistance at the bench as required as observed by Histology Manager.
  • 1.5 Conducts orientation and training for new employees and provides in-service education forums for all staff as observed by the Histology Manager.
  • 2. Directs the daily operations of the department.
  • 2.1 Establishes and enforces technical and administrative policies and procedures per professional and hospital standards 100% of the time as observed by Histology Manager.
  • 2.2 Prepares for and participates in and complies with inspections by regulatory agencies as observed by Histology Manager.
  • 2.3 Communicates department policy in a clear and efficient manner as observed by Histology Manager and feedback from staff members.
  • 2.4 Provides both positive feedback and constructive criticism to staff in conjunction with the Histology Manager.
  • 3. Controls all result reporting activity including Quality Assurance.
  • 3.1 Oversees the generation of all results.
  • 3.2 Assures that all results are produced in an accurate and efficient manner as observed by Histology Manager.
  • 3.3 Conducts and controls all quality control activity as observed by Histology Manager.
  • 3.4 Assists in resolution, clarification, and reaffirmation of results that are clinically difficult or not fitting the norm as observed by the Medical Director.
  • 3.5 Establishes and quantifies departmental quality assurance monitors with the Medical Director.
  • 3.6 Summarizes and presents quality assurance data on a monthly basis as documented in monthly reports reviewed by Histology Manager.
  • 3.7 Identifies problems and presents solutions using the quality assurance process as observed by Histology Manager and as required.
  • 4. Plans for supply purchases and instrument maintenance.
  • 4.1 Assures adequate supply inventories are maintained as observed by Histology Manager and clinical chief.
  • 4.2 Surveys vendors to obtain best product and price available as observed by Histology Manager.
  • 4.3 Recommends supply upgrades, enhancements and changes as reviewed by Histology Manager.
  • 5. Directs all problem solving activities.
  • 5.1 Works directly with clinician to resolve issues as required as observed by Histology Manager and based on feedback from clinician.
  • 5.2 Trouble shoots technical departmental problems as they occur as reviewed by Histology Manager and/or clinician.
  • 5.3 Works to identify and resolve personnel problems with the Histology Manager.
  • 6. Plans for future enhancements to departmental procedures and operations.
  • 6.1 Reviews current literature for new methods and state-of-the-art techniques and makes recommendations to implement new tests, procedures, or methodologies as noted in periodic reports to Histology Manager and/or clinician.
  • 6.2 Examines levels of work sent out to evaluate bringing it in house as documented in report to Histology Manager and/or clinician.
  • 7. Fosters professionalism and demonstrates flexibility both inside and outside the department.
  • 7.1 Adapts appropriately to a changing hospital and regulatory environments as observed by Histology Manager.
  • 7.2 Communicates effectively with staff, patients, and physicians as observed by Histology Manager.
  • 7.3 Establishes customer satisfaction as a departmental goal as observed by Histology Manager and feedback from customers.
  • 7.4 Prioritizes and accomplishes the needs of the section as review with Histology Manager.
  • 8. Maintains a high level of safety within the department.
  • 8.1 Enforces safety regulations according to established safety standards as indicated by supervisory observation.
  • 8.2 Schedules staff for mandatory hospital safety in-services as observed by supervisor.
  • 8.3 Prepares incident reports as required as observed by supervisor.
  • 9. Screens all cytology cases.
  • 9.1 Screens cytology cases accurately as evidenced in monthly review of quality control book.
  • 9.2 Applies highest interpretive standards when screening tests, holding inviolate the trust of both patient and physician as observed by supervisor.
  • 9.3 Demonstrates an understanding of the underlying scientific principals of cytologic laboratory testing in accordance with accepted professional and hospital standards as observed by the supervisor.
  • 9.4 Demonstrates a general, comprehensive knowledge of all laboratory testing in accordance with accepted professional and hospital standards as indicated by feedback from departments and supervisory observation.
  • 9.5 Correlates microscopic findings with collection method, clinical data and disease processes according to established standards as observed by random review of log book and supervisory observation.
  • 9.6 Obtains previous atypical clinical history on patients accurately as indicated by feedback from pathologist.
  • 10. Prepares and processes all cytology specimens.
  • 10.1 Performs cytology testing on all non-gyn specimens according to departmental protocol as observed by the supervisor and staff.
  • 10.2 Participates in the introduction and implementation of new procedures in accordance with accepted professional standards as observed by supervisor.
  • 10.3 Participates in the evaluation of new instruments in accordance with accepted professional standards as observed by supervisor.
  • 10.4 Prepares stains and solutions for staining procedure according to departmental protocol as observed by supervisor.
  • 10.5 Provides accurate transcription of gyn and non-gyn reports in information system daily as observed by supervisor.
  • 10.6 Files slides and reports on a timely basis as observed by supervisor.
  • 11. Performs and reviews tests as required for assigned patients.
  • 11.1 Demonstrates and maintains current knowledge and skill in performing and reviewing test results for geriatric patients as observed by supervisor and as indicated by feedback from staff.
  • 11.2 Demonstrates and maintains current knowledge and skill in performing and reviewing test results for adult patients as observed by supervisor and as indicated by feedback from staff.
  • 11.3 Demonstrates and maintains current knowledge and skill in performing and reviewing test results for young adult patients as observed by supervisor and as indicated by feedback from staff.
  • 11.4 Demonstrates and maintains current knowledge and skill in performing and reviewing test results for pediatric patients as observed by supervisor and as indicated by feedback from staff.
  • 12. Assists on all FNA procedures in various areas of the hospital.
  • 12.1 Obtains necessary patient information as indicated by feedback from pathologist.
  • 12.2 Obtains previous clinical history including pulling previous slides on all FNA patients within appropriate time frame after notification as observed by supervisor and pathologist.
  • 12.3 Checks and maintains all supplies and solutions on FNA cart in accordance with department policies as observed by supervisor.
  • 12.4 Maintains appropriate records in the FNA book as noted in monthly review of the book.
  • 12.5 Carries out FNA procedures by following department policies and documents records in FNA book for QA purposes if such procedures are not followed as indicated by periodic review of FNA book.

    EXPERIENCE:
    Registered Cytotechnologist with at least 6 years full-time experience (or Masters Degree)

    SPECIAL_SKILLS:
    Meets all CLIA ''88 standards for General Supervisor.

    PHYSICAL_DEMAND:

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. They must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. They are frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
