Under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager and Section Coordinator, performs a wide range of clinical laboratory testing in an accurate and timely fashion by utilizing technical and problem-solving skills in conjunction with a thorough knowledge of Molecular Diagnostics principles and instrumentation. Ability to perform clinical laboratory testing, including but not limited to, extraction of nucleic acid, Real-Time PCR, Pyrosequencing and Next Generation Sequencing analysis. Cooperatively and proactively assists in other areas as needed in a teamwork oriented environment. Maintains effective communications with employees while following CHAMP and HRO standards. Maintains all Quality Control and Quality Assurance standards at all times. Maintains operational effectiveness and assumes full responsibility for continuing education requirements, licensure and expertise to adapt as needed to an expanding department with increased testing complexity.
Responsibilities: 1. Technical Skills-Demonstrates technical competency by performing a wide variety of techniques involved in the molecular laboratory. These include moderate to highly complex tests. 1.1. Performs tests according to laboratory procedures with acceptable accuracy and precision. 1.2. Understands basic principles of molecular biology procedures including such concepts as analytical theory, quality control evaluation, clinical significance of the assay, instrumentation used, reagent stability, etc. 1.3. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of specimen processing requirements including specimen requirements, specimen assessment, and sample storage requirements. 1.4. Collects Quality Assurance and Error Management data and discusses pertinent issues with Coordinator and the Lab Manager. 1.5. Learns new procedures readily according to training schedule. Takes initiative to maintain skills for all tests. 1.6. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of Quality Control data assessment; applies such knowledge to assessment of QC runs; documents QC and corrective actions in appropriate QC logs; alerts Coordinator when QC issues arise; discusses QC issues with Coordinator in order to increase knowledge base. 1.7. Handles specimens so as to minimize turn-around-time and maximize reporting of clinically useful information. 2. Instrumentation Skills-Demonstrates sufficient knowledge and skills to independently operate and troubleshoot all instrumentation. 2.1. Performs instrument maintenance according to schedule including documentation, within established time limits. 2.2. Demonstrates ability to perform basic instrument operation including menu options and response to error flags. 2.3. Follows established quality control procedures, including frequency of quality control monitoring; evaluation of acceptability of results; documentation of response to outliers. 2.4. Follows safety procedures and uses appropriate safety materials and personal protective equipment. 2.5. Independently evaluates results for acceptability based on proper instrument operation, plausibility of results, previous patient data; alerts supervisor if discrepancies. 3. General Laboratory Skills and Knowledge-Performs tasks that assist with overall operation of laboratory service according to laboratory policies and in compliance with regulatory guidelines. 3.1. Takes responsibility for all reagents and supplies associated with assigned test to ensure adequate materials are available for analysis. 3.2. Participates in CAP testing as established by laboratory and regulatory procedures. 3.3. Demonstrates organizational skills to prioritize work according to urgency and medical need. Performs multiple tasks to optimize efficiency. 3.4. Follows safety procedures and uses appropriate safety materials and personal protective equipment. 3.5. Demonstrates knowledge of general laboratory policies and procedures for quality control monitoring of equipment including temperature checks, pipet calibration, general equipment maintenance and documentation. 3.6. Demonstrates knowledge of use of laboratory computer programs and functions. 3.7. Reports problems and situations inconsistent with good patient care to appropriate person(s). 3.8. Recognizes and performs duties which need to be performed to enhance the overall laboratory environment. 3.9. Maintains all required documentation according to laboratory policies including log sheets and problem logs. 3.10. Consistently follows laboratory procedures for reagent labeling. 4. Professional Skills-Participates in activities that demonstrate professionalism, a commitment to competency and career growth. 4.1. Assumes leadership role for students, trainees and co-workers by providing technical assistance when asked. 4.2. Participates in the laboratory continuing education program obtaining at least 12 CEU credits per year. 4.3. Demonstrates positive approach to learning new concepts, responsibilities, techniques and/or procedures. 4.4. Adheres to hospital policy by returning from breaks/lunch within established times. 4.5. Demonstrates a sensitivity to needs of co-workers and patients by adhering to policies governing confidentiality. 4.6. Recognizes the needs of others and responds to them in a professional manner. Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology, Molecular Biology or related field with MT (ASCP) or MB (ASCP) certification. Those with equivalent certification or those eligible for certification will also be considered.
One to two years' experience in a laboratory setting, preferably in a Molecular Diagnostics laboratory. Some knowledge of molecular diagnostics theory and techniques including cancer biology is desired. The ability to multi-task and work as a member of a team is essential.
MT(ASCP) or MB(ASCP) certification or equivalent or eligible.
Working knowledge of instrumentation and equipment used in a Clinical Molecular laboratory. Efficiency in word processing applications, spreadsheet design/utilization and use of web based resources. Basic knowledge of laboratory information systems. Must possess excellent communication skills and ability to communicate in an effective and professional manner with hospital staff. Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills are required.
Performs a variety of routine to highly complex tests and procedures, performs instrument maintenance procedures, performs routine quality control procedures. Reports to the Laboratory Manager of the Tumor Profiling Laboratory.
Performs both routine and specialized tests. Prepares reports of testing in a timely fashion; reports findings to the appropriate personnel; performs all duties in accordance with established Clinical Laboratory Standards.
