Job Description

2-3 Years acute care experience required. Must be able to take call on weekends, weeknights and holidays and be within 30 minutes of hospital when on call.

Summary:
A professional registered nurse responsible and accountable for providing nursing care to patients and their families by utilizing the nursing process, and in accordance with standards identified by The American Nurse?s Association, and The Society of Gastrointestinal Nurses Association. The registered nurse is expected to provide primary nursing care for patients and to assume responsibility for nursing process by assessment, plan of care, intervention, and evaluation.

Responsibilities:
  • 1. Clinical Competence in Patient Care
  • 1.1. Complies with patient safety standards
  • 1.2. Safety adminsters medications following established policy + procedure
  • 1.3. Performs and documents a comprehensive assessment of patient needs incorporating physical, cultural, and spiritual domains
  • 1.4. Provides individualized, goal directed care to patients with consideration of the aging process of populations served
  • 1.5. Collaborates with other members of the patient care team to evaluate patient out comes and determine alternatives as needed
  • 1.6. Has knowledge and ability to utilize all computer applications required with accuracy and proficiency. Including but not limited to Paragon McKesson applications and gMed.
  • 1.7. Demonstrates knowledge and skill in equipment required during Endoscopy procedures
  • 1.8. Assesses patients continually during procedures and recognizes and responds appropriately to changes in patient status.
  • 1.9. Protects patients and themselves by following guidelines for infection control and protective equipment.
  • 1.10. Demonstrates knowledge + ability to clean + disinfect equipment
  • 1.11. Appropriately sets up minor OR for procedures using aseptic technique.
  • 2. Safety administers medications and IV therapies
  • 2.1. Adheres to the 5 R's of medication admistrations and has knowledge of medications administered
  • 2.2. Follows correct procedure for administration/documentation and waste of controlled substances
  • 2.3. Assesses and documents patients response to administered medications
  • 2.4. Identifies and appropriately responds to adverse reactions
  • 2.5. Maintains ONS certification to administer chemotherapy (if applicable)
  • 2.6. Demonstrates skill in accessing + maintaining peripheral IV?s, PICC lines and implantable ports
  • 2.7. Scans wristband and med prior to administration per policy
  • 3. Professional Behavior and Growth
  • 3.1. Demonstrates evidence of professional growth by education thru attendance at seminars and in-services related to field of practice, and on hospital and unit committees.
  • 3.2. Researches un familiar procedures, diagnosis, medications, and shares findings
  • 3.3. Acts as a resource to staff, patients and their families/significant others. Orients new employees
  • 3.4. Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to safety of the organization and specific job related hazards.

  • 4.4. Supervises + directs non clinical + technical staff involved in patient care. Performs charge duties
  • 5. Identifies and Contributes to Performance Improvement Opportunities
  • 5.1. Participates in performance improvement initiatives, identifying opportunities for improvement, looking at best practices
  • 5.2. Recommends nursing strategies based on evidence based practices to the director
  • 5.3. Collaborates with other members of the patient care team to evaluate patient outcomes and determine alternatives for care
  • 6. Appropriately Utilizes Resources
  • 6.1. Reports to work on time, prepared to work and follow hospital policies for notice of lateness/ absenteeism and time off requsts
  • 6.2. Prioritizes responsibilities appropriately and completes tasks within assigned time frames. Readily accepts assignments
  • 6.3. Uses and respects resources as if it were their own. Exercises good judgment in supply usage
  • 6.4. Take initiative to use down time productively
  • 6.5. Takes initiative to keep informed and updated on department and hospital information by attending staff meetings, checking e-mails, and department postings.

  • 7.1. Demonstrates a high level of respect, dignity compassion and professionalism for all customers by utilizing the four tenets (Dignity + Respect, Information Sharing, Participation, Collaboration) of Patient Family and Centered Partnership.
  • 7.2. Responds to customer's issues/requests in a clear, concise, and timely manner utilizing active listening skills and validating information.
  • 7.3. Promotes positive intradepartmental and interdepartmental relationships
  • 7.4. Maintains confidentiality with respect to patient, co-worker and hospital information by disclosing information only on a "need to know basis" and discussing information in appropriate areas. Follows HIPPA guidelines in all communications regarding patients

    EDUCATION:

    Graduate of an accredited school of nursing


    EXPERIENCE:

    2-3 years med surg experience required. Experience in an Ambulatory Care Unit and infusion center preferred.


    LICENSURE:

    Current RI license/registration BLS Current certification ACLS and PALS certification
