Summary:
. The Nursing Assistant assists inpatient care throughout nursing areas, and is responsible for the safe transport of patients via wheelchair or stretcher, dispatch services and appropriate documentation of services. Provides the services of an Observer for any patient on a patient care unit who has been assessed to require constant observation in order to maximize his/her safety. Performs general receptionist and clerical duties in order to facilitate efficient functioning of the nursing unit.

Responsibilities:
  • 1. Essential Functions
  • 1.1. Demonstrates the skills and judgment necessary to provide direct care to patients under the direct supervision of licensed personnel and according to their standards of practice.
  • 1.2. Communicates to licensed personnel any changes noticed inn patients condition, or any problems with treatments or devices.
  • 1.3. Assists with basic patient care including but not inclusive to AM and PM care, vital signs, toileting, I&O, feeding, activities of daily living, transport of patients throughout hospital, responds to call lights promptly and provides necessary assistance. Orients patients and families to the unit - sets up equipment in patient?s rooms to prepare for admissions.
  • 1.4. Maintains clean and orderly patient care, storage, pantry and utility areas.
  • 1.5. Meets and greets each patient/family as they come into the Emergency Department as the first point of contact.
  • 1.6. Communicates patient?s medical complaint/s or reason for visit to licensed personnel in the Emergency Department.
  • 1.7. Recognizes and informs Emergency Department licensed personnel of need for patient assistance upon arrival.
  • 1.8. Facilitates communication between patient and visitors in waiting room and Emergency Department personnel.
  • 1.9. Adheres to The Westerly Hospital policies and procedures
  • 1.10. Adheres to the hospital exposure control plans/blood-borne and airborne pathogens
  • 1.11. Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure the smooth operation of the department to provide quality patient care.

  • 2.2. Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to safety of the organization and specific job related hazards.
  • 2.3. Takes initiative to keep informed and updated on department and hospital information by attending staff meetings, checking e-mails, and department posting.

  • 3.2. Functions as a preceptor to new staff. Gives constructive and timely feedback to the orientee.

  • 6.1. Reports to work on time, prepared to work and follow hospital policies for notice of lateness/absenteeism and time off requests.

  • 6.3. Uses and respects resources as if it were their own. Exercises good judgment in supply usage.

    EDUCATION:

    High school graduate or equivalent


    EXPERIENCE:

    Previous hospital or nursing home experience a plus

    LICENSURE:

    Current RI Nursing Assistant License Basic Life Support
