Job Description

Performs a wide range of Safety and Security functions. Including the protection of patients, employees, visitors and hospital assets, as well as providing a safe and secure environment. Able to provide appropriate care for patients served, regardless of age.

  • 1. Contributes to the productivity and efficient operation to the department.
  • 1.1. Notifies Security Manager of workload status in order to be reassigned or to receive assistance as demonstrated by assignments being completed in requested time frame.
  • 1.2. Demonstrates effective time management by prioritizing work according to established schedule and emergencies.
  • 1.3. Submits suggestions to improve the efficient and effective operation of the department.
  • 1.4. Identifies own learning needs by seeking assistance form others in department for unfamiliar procedures.
  • 1.5. Participates in own performance appraisal by identifying individual goals and reviewing progress with the Security Manager.
  • 2. Patrols premises to intervene with unlawful activities and unsafe conditions.
  • 2.1. Patrols Hospital grounds and Hospital owned properties on scheduled or un-scheduled tours. Makes sure all Safety and Security policies are being observed as monitored by the Security Manager.
  • 2.2. Answers all requests for assistance and enforces Hospital rules and regulations according to established procedures.
  • 2.3. Enforces parking regulations according to established procedures.
  • 2.4. Monitors video and audio surveillance and computer equipment for any unlawful activity or unsafe conditions.
  • 3. Responsible for promoting the Greenwich Hospital Patient and Guest Relations program. Assist in visitor and patient control.
  • 3.1. Provides positive supportive communications to co-workers, visitors and patient.
  • 3.2. Directs visitors to appropriate areas of the hospital.
  • 4. Participation in Fire and Disaster Emergency conditions
  • 4.1. Maintains patient's employee's and visitor's safety by active trained response during fire and other emergencies.
  • 4.2. Continually assures access to all stairs, passageways and emerging equipment according to I.L.S.M. and the Emergency Preparedness Manual for fire safety and local fire regulations.
  • 4.3. Must maintain full knowledge of the Emergency Preparedness Plan and trained proficiency to respond to conditions arising from a variety of emergency situations.
  • 4.4. Assist parking attendants with traffic flow management on campus grounds on a daily basis and for special events.
  • 4.5. Ensures compliance with confidential protected health information in work areas and over a communications network.
  • 4.6. Assists with operation of the Hospital Emergency Operations Center by providing security and working with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies coordinating responses for mass casualties.
  • 4.7. Implements facilities disaster plan emergency lockdown policy and provides security for the E.O.C., triage, patient care, morgue and other sensitive or strategic areas from unauthorized access.
  • 4.8. Participates in set-up of Decontamination equipment, maintains issued equipment for decontamination and hazardous materials spill clean-up.
  • 4.9. Assists with the oversight of the Hazardous Waste Disposal area and reports deficiencies to the Security Coordinator and Director.
  • 5. Responds To Hazardous Materials Incidents, Participates in Casualty Decontamination.
  • 5.1. Completes training and responds to Hazardous Materials Spills, protects and isolates the area, handles mitigation of spill incidents as determined by level of qualification. Coordinates with the Fire Department Hazardous Materials Unit for major incidents.
  • 5.2. Basic knowledge of Hospital Emergency Incident Command System.
  • 5.3. Responsible for limited/total facility lockdown for victims of mass terrorism/tactical violence.
  • 5.4. Directs arrival of victims from Chemical/Biological incidents to Decontamination Area.
  • 5.5. Establishes safe perimeter with local Law Enforcement around hospital campus.
  • 5.6. Trains in Mass Casualty Decontamination for medical and patient arrivals at the hospital.
  • 5.7. Sets up Decontamination Site and equipment.
  • 5.8. Dons Decontamination Personal Protective Equipment, initiates decontamination of First Responders and Patients prior to treatment, and coordinates emergency medical evaluation with qualified medical personnel at decontamination site.
  • 6. Investigates Occurrences.
  • 6.1. Investigates all occurrences and provides accurate documentation according to established protocol.
  • 6.2. Completes reports on all occurrences according to established procedures.
  • 6.3. Completes reports and other departmental forms accurately and within established time frame.
  • 6.4. Maintains confidentiality of departmental information according to established procedures, with no reported errors.
  • 6.5. Uses universal precautions as outlined in the department Infection Control Manual.

    High School Graduate


    1-2 years in Safety/Security field or equivalent desired.


    Ability to operate access control systems and security based software programs to monitor campus activity and take corrective actions with system alarms. Ability to operate video and audio surveillance equipment, paging and radio communications equipment. Must have a valid driver's license and successfully complete a background check to determine absence of criminal history and convictions. Certification in CPR and Automated External Defibrillation preferred. Certification as Hazardous Materials Technician, State of Connecticut Certification as a Security Officer.



    Exposure to inclement weather and Potential exposure to hazardous conditions and materials during emergency conditions. ?
    Must be able to climb (8) flights of stairs under stressful emergency conditions, carry heavy objects, and restrain disruptive, disturbed, or combative patients. Must be able to cope with stressful situations. Moderate to excessive walking with some bending and stooping.
