Summary:
The Physician Associate (P.A.) provides comprehensive care to neonates under the supervision of the Attending Neonatologist as directed by established protocols which are recorded in the NBSCU manual. In collaboration with the health care team, the Physician Associate (P.A.) provides continuity of care to neonatal patients during extended hospitalization, as well as contributes to the education of health care professionals.

Responsibilities:
  • 1. Clinical Practice
  • 1.1. Delineation of Activities:
  • 1.2. Assumes primary patient care responsibilities for infants in the Newborn Special Care Unit under the supervision of the Attending Neonatologist.
  • 1.3. Identifies health care needs and assesses health status of patient/family for length of hospitalization.
  • 1.4. Identifies and implements medical plan through daily rounds with Attending Neonatologists.
  • 1.5. Documents daily progress in medical record, including assessment of growth and development.
  • 1.6. Discusses patient with Attending Neonatologist at least daily, more often as necessary.
  • 1.7. All patient care responsibilities will be performed consistent with age-specific criteria (see attached).
  • 2. Performs initial evaluation of all patients, including:
  • 2.1. History, physical examination, and documents same.
  • 2.2. For all admissions to the NBSCU, notifies the responsible physician as soon as possible concerning the pertinent historical events and physical findings.
  • 3. Performs special procedures, as indicated, in accordance with approved protocols. Procedures include: lumbar puncture, chest tube thoracotomy/evaluation of pneumothorax, endotracheal intubation, suprapubic tap, tracheal suctioning, radial artery puncture, and umbilical vessel catheterization and PCVC placement.
  • 4. High risk delivery attendance and in unit emergencies will be able to direct or assist in the care of an infant, including the performance of necessary procedures, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics Guidelines for neonatal resuscitation.
  • 5. Evaluates the infant with regard to discharge status. Performs discharge exams and completes paperwork and discharge dictation when indicated.
  • 6. Provides for family support:
  • 6.1. Collaborates with other health care team members, referring physician, and coordinates appropriate educational experience and follow-up care.
  • 7. Educational Efforts:
  • 7.1. Identifies learning needs of team members and families.
  • 7.2. Provides bedside teaching and supervision of procedures.
  • 7.3. Participates in continuing education of health care team and affiliated students.
  • 8. Research:
  • 8.1. The practitioner may participate, collaborate, or initiate research activities with the Department of Obstetric/Gynecologic/Pediatric Nursing.
  • 8.2. Applies research-based data to clinical practice in the care of neonates.
  • 9. Professional Development:
  • 9.1. Participates in at least one (1) professional organization.
  • 9.2. Attends at least one (1) major national conference, one (1) local conference, and nine (9) in-house conferences each year.
  • 9.3. Maintains current nationally recognized certificates.
  • 9.4. Maintains annual recertification in neonatal resuscitation.
  • 10. Evaluation:
  • 10.1. The Physician Associate (P.A) will be evaluated annually as to performance within their job description by the Director of Neonatology and the Clinical Director of Obstetric/
  • 10.2. Gynecologic/Pediatric Nursing (or designee).
  • 10.3. A self evaluation is required.

    Other information:

    EDUCATION:

    Graduate of approved Physician's Assistant Program. Certification as a P.A. by the National Commission on Certification of Physician's Assistant, Inc.

    EXPERIENCE:

    One (1) to two (2) years as a P.A. in a neonatal intensive care unit.

    LICENSURE:

    Connecticut license as a PA
    Certification as a PA by the National Commission on Certification of Pysician Assistant, Inc. (NCCPA)

    SPECIAL_SKILLS:

    Excellent basic medical knowledge with clinical skills and judgement. Possess analytical skills to evaluate care needs, ability to gather relevant clinical data, perform thorough physical examinations, and possess excellent interpersonal skills, communication, and leadership abilities and exhibit good judgement and tact dealing with parents, families, and allied health professionals. Computer skills preferred.
