Under the direct supervision of the RN or Patient Care Manager, performs duties to care for the Emergency patients. This includes assisting the RN or Physician with direct patient care and performing EKG's, phlebotomy, splinting, point of care testing, data collection on temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure measurements, pain etc. Stocks supplies, sets up equipment, transports patients, performs constant observation and other related duties. Helps maintain a clean, ordered and safe work area.
Responsibilities: 1. Conducts patient care under the direction of the RN. 1.1. Accepts patient into cubicle and removes clothing, bags and labels. Provides patient a pillow 1.2. Obtains vital signs, places patient on cardiac monitor if applicable. 1.3. Cares for patient as needed including: Oral hygiene, incontinent care, ambulating patient, providing nourishment to the patient, changing bed linen, etc. 1.4. Answers call lights promptly and courteously for all patients 1.5. Maintains clean, orderly patient environment. 1.6. Obtains temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure measurements, including orthostatic parameters as appropriate and data for pain assessment. 1.7. Computes and records food and fluid intake and output. 1.8. Observes IV site for redness, swelling, and pain. 1.9. Obtains oxygen saturation measure using pulse oximeter. 1.10. Performs point of care testing (i.e. urine pregnancy testing, etc.) 1.11. Reports results of above to supervising RN. 2. Performs non-sterile treatments such as: cold compresses, post-mortem care, Foley catheter care, Ace bandages, applying casts and orthopedic splints including Hare traction,
non-sterile dressings, sitz baths. 2.1. Assists patients with turning, coughing and deep breathing. 2.2. Hypothermia/Hyperthermia blanket set up. 2.3. Ostomy care 3. Performs specimen collection/procedures. 3.1. Phelbotomy: Uses computer system as required to document and print labels. Verifies patient identification by checking ID bracelet. Uses correct technique and procedures in collecting specimens, including correct collection tubes and obtaining correct amount of blood as specified. Performs finger stick glucose test. 3.2. Records EKG's: Inputs all appropriate information into computerized EKG machine prior to procedure (name, unit number, sex, age, location, etc.). Uses EKG equipment correctly and tests prior to using. Uses correct lead placement and application, shaving the areas as needed. Reviews recording for artifact, checks results against normal parameters, and re-records as necessary. Cleans and disinfects equipment after each use. Tags malfunctioning equipment as appropriate. 3.3. Procures and sets up supplies for suturing 3.4. Sets up pleuravacs and Level One infuser 3.5. Assists with helicopter transfers 3.6. Assists with decontamination of patients 3.7. Assists providers with GYN exams 3.8. Performs eye irrigation and performs visual acuity 3.9. Assists with nasal hemorrhage intervention i.e. sets up cautery, assists with suctioning 3.10. Other : Monitors oxygen flow according to physician's orders, reporting problems/changes to RN. Monitors continuous suction. Obtains non-sterile urine specimen from foley catheter. Stock par levels of iv/phlebotomy supplies, linen, emergency cubicle supplies. 4. Uses effective interpersonal relation skills in all interactions. 4.1. Demonstrates respect for the other person in all interactions. 4.2. Maintains a calm attitude in problematic situations. 4.3. Works effectively with other health care providers. 4.4. Is helpful and cooperative with patients, visitors and all staff. 4.5. Always introduces self before providing care. 5. Maintains active involvement in all educational activities related to role. 5.1. Attends all mandatory inservices and equipment validations. Attends other educational offerings as assigned. 6. Performs other responsibilities as requested by Manager. 6.1. Assists in orienting new Clinical Technicians.
High school diploma or equivalent.
One (1) to two (2) years of patient care experience required. Experience in a patient care emergency room setting or related setting preferred.
EMT training required.
English speaking, reading and writing ability. Competent to provide care to patients of all ages. CPR certification preferred or must attain it before completion of orientation and maintain the certification. Must complete specialized training and be adequately prepared upon completion of probationary period for urine pregnancy testing, orthopedic casting and splints and phlebotomy. Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast paced setting.
