Summary:
Receive, accession, process, embed, cut,stain,mount and label surgical specimens for examination by the pathologist
Responsibilities:
1. Technical Duties
1.1. Prepares gross surgical specimens for Pathology Assistant or Pathologist
1.2. Prepares surgical specimens using a variety of technical procedures including embedding, sectioning, staining, cover slipping and labeling.
1.3. Prepares reagents and stains using predetermined procedures
1.4. Reviews and periodically discards specimens following stated requirements????
2. Other duties
2.1. Maintains accurate records of incoming and outgoing specimens and slides.
2.2. Monitors internal supplies inventory and orders from Stockroom, as needed.
2.3. Assists supervisor in fulfilling staffing needs, work methods, and performance standards in Histology
2.4. Performs any other duties related to the department, as may be indicated by the Supervisor or Pathologist
3. Quality
3.1. Investigates and documents problems with unacceptable specimens
3.2. Accurately performs and evaluates QC results according to CAP guidelines before releasing patient test results.
3.3. Appropriately notifies a supervisor of discrepant QC results
4. Problem solving
4.1. Follows established quidelines for troubleshooting instrument, reagent or specimen problems
4.2. Documents problem and steps taken in troubleshooting process
4.3. Follows appropriate downtime procedures
4.4. Immediately notifies supervisor or designee when unable to resolve a problem
5. Regulation Compliance
5.1. Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety
5.2. Complies with established safety policies for chemical handling, storage and disposal
5.3. Operates assigned equipment and performs all procedures in a safe manner as instructed
5.4. Ensure a safe work environment by complying with established procedures
6. People
6.1. Participates in staff meetings, helps promote effective working relationships
6.2. Maintains open communication using appropriate chain of command
6.3. Interacts professionally with all members of the hospital staff
6.4. Willingness to help co-worker and/or other lab sections if needed
7. Customer Service
7.1. Uses Patient/Family center values/Conducts all work activities with respect to the rights and wishes of patients, visitors and patients families
7.2. Uses appropriate phone etiquette, answers the phone within three rings if possible
7.3. Tries to resolve customer requests at the initial phone call before transfering to another section
Other information:
EDUCATION:
Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), AND successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnology program within the last five years. Completion of NAACLS accredited program waived with current HTL(ASCP) certification.\u000b\u000bOR Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), AND one year full time acceptable experience in a histopathology laboratory.
EXPERIENCE:
Three years of Histology experience preferred
LICENSURE:
ASCP certification preferred.
