The Central Service Technician is a team player that works in all facets of the department and is responsible for collection, decontamination, preparation, sterilization & distribution of instrument trays, supplies and equipment in a safe and expeditious fashion while following department policies & procedures.

  • 1. Demonstrates Competence in Performance of job Function
  • 1.1. Ability to work under pressure and stressful conditions.

  • 1.3. Ability to make critical decisions regarding sterilization protocol and the need to be resourceful.
  • 1.4. Specific vision abilities included close, distant and color vision.
  • 1.5. Flexibility and manual dexterity is needed to handle and inspect instruments and equipment.
  • 1.6. Rounds on nursing units as scheduled on a daily basis for equipment retrieval and cleaning and to provide specialty items as needed.
  • 2. Infection Control
  • 2.1. Demonstrates proper decontamination of instruments and equipment following the principals of the Infection Content Policy Manual.
  • 2.2. Always ensures Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) available and used properly.
  • 2.3. Shows knowledge of which instruments that need to be manually cleaned (remove bio-burden) i.e.; cannulated instruments, instruments with multiple parts.
  • 2.4. Exhibits competency in identifying sterile from unsterile and/or contaminated by using the multiple safety checks, and paying attention to the load indicators.
  • 2.5. Identifies wet packs and performs corrective action of reprocessing for safe use.
  • 3. Demonstrates Competency in Operation of Department Equipment
  • 3.1. Knowledge of operation the department?s equipment including but not limited to the Hamo washer/ decontaminator, steam sterilizers, Sterrad ,incubator and other equipment as purchased & used in the department.
  • 3.2. Attends all in-services to learn to operate above equipment.
  • 3.3. Calls Biomed immediately for faulty, malfunctioning equipment and takes it out of service until cleared by Biomed.
  • 3.4. Completes appropriate documentation on a daily basis for providing traceability when/if needed.
  • 3.5. Accurately completes bowie dick test cards on a daily basis.
  • 3.6. Completes and initials the load card for each load run in a sterilizer.
  • 3.7. Runs a biological equivalent test on each autoclave at the beginning of each day.
  • 3.8. Initials every tray put together by this person. Initials each load tape on the autoclaves? when run.
  • 4. Displays knowledge of instruments used on a daily basis.
  • 4.1. Knows proper function of instruments and identifies when one is broken; then brings it to the attention of the supervisor or the materials facilitator for replacement.
  • 4.2. Identifies complete instrument sets and locates instruments out of place, using manuals or computers to look up specialty sets.
  • 4.3. Knows how to implement the rigid containers system and is able to examine the integrity of all packages from the initial sterilization and ending at the point of use.
  • 4.4. Researches unfamiliar instruments and equipment and shares findings with peers.
  • 4.5. Demonstrates evidence of professional growth by education thru attendance at seminars and in-services related to field of practice.
  • 4.6. Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to safety of the organizations and specific job related hazards.

  • 6.2. Prioritizes responsibilities appropriately and completes tasks within assigned time frames. Readily accepts assignments.
  • 6.3. Uses and respects resources as if it were their own. Exercises good judgment in supply usage.
  • 6.4. Take initiative to use down time productively.
  • 6.5. Takes initiative to keep informed and updated on department and hospital information by attending staff meetings, checking e-mails, and department postings.
  • 7. Supports Activities for Exceptional Customer Service.
  • 7.1. Demonstrates a high level of respect, dignity compassion and professionalism for all customers by utilizing the four tenets of Patient Family and Centered Partnership.
  • 7.2. Responds to customer?s issues/requests in a clear, concise, and timely manner utilizing active listening skills and validating information.
  • 7.3. Promotes positives intradepartmental and interdepartmental relationships.
  • 7.4. Maintains confidentially with respects to patients, co-workers and hospital information by disclosing information only on a ?need to know basis? and discussing information in appropriate areas. Follows HIPPA guidelines in all communications regarding patients.

    Other information:


    H.S. diploma or equivalent.


    Previous experience with handling and sterilizing instruments.


    C.R.C.S.T. required to be achieved within one year of hire



    Must be able to handle multiple tasks & responsibilities simultaneously with attention to detail and accuracy in a fast paced, stressful environment. Frequent interruptions by staff & phone. Interaction with nursing staff, physicians and other departments. Demonstrates courtesy and excellent customer service skills in all interactions. Demonstrates ownership of all interactions until resolved. Prolonged periods of standing, lifting heavy instrument trays and pushing loaded case carts.
