Summary:
Under the supervision of the Radiology Manager and/or Assistant Chief Technologist, performs a wide variety of technical and professional duties utilizing complex imaging equipment to produce quality Ultrasound images as requested for subsequent interpretation by the radiologist. All duties are performed according to departmental and organizational policies and procedures., Promotes service excellence in all interactions as outlined in the Key Behaviors in the YNHH Core Success Factors. To meet the staffing needs of the department, as necessary, Diagnostic Radiology staff may be assigned at any of the YNHH Diagnostic Radiology locations, regardless of your regularly assigned work location.

Responsibilities:
  • 1. Performs quality and efficient ultrasound imaging in order to assist with patient's diagnostic work-up
  • 1.1. Follows routine protocols and/or physicians specific prescriptions. Repeat of examinations due to non-compliance is minimal as observed by manager / physician review.
  • 1.2. Routinely documents accurate pathology as reviewed by manager and physician's reading.
  • 1.3. Demonstrates the ability to utilize independent judgment to change scanning protocol and technique to improve exam quality as observed by manager and or physician.
  • 1.4. Demonstrates an ability to identify equipment difficulties. Alerts and assists administrative staff to address issues.
  • 1.5. Demonstrates knowledge of pertinent regulatory compliance standards. Participates and accurately completes all required documentation.
  • 1.6. Has minimal inactive scanning time between patients in order to maximize section's efficiency and reduce patient delays, as observed by coordinator/manager.
  • 1.7. Demonstrates understanding and use of procedure set ups.
  • 2. Performs quality and compassionate patient care in order to ensure patient cooperation, safety and satisfaction.
  • 2.1. Identifies patients accurately 100% of the time according to departmental policy as observed by supervisor or other hospital staff.
  • 2.2. Makes a great first impression and thoroughly explains procedure and ensures patient physical and emotional comfort as observed by coordinator/manager.
  • 2.3. Demonstrates use of scripts with patient and families before, during and after procedure as observed by coordinator/manager.
  • 2.4. Is attentive and responsive to the concerns of all patients and their families as noted by coordinator/manager and evidenced by information gathered from discharge phone calls, Press-Ganey surveys and patient letters.
  • 2.5. Is attentive to patient care needs 100% of time and expediently calls for nursing/physician and medical support as required, as evidenced by incident reports, employee, physician and nursing input.
  • 2.6. Interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors, physicians and fellow employees are fostered in a courteous and friendly manner as evidenced by surveys, physicians and employee input.
  • 2.7. Actively participates is section activities aimed at improving Press Ganey results.
  • 2.8. Demonstrates the commitment to making patient/family visits to the section a positive

  • 3. Performs various record-keeping functions in order to ensure goals of the department are met and operation runs efficiently.
  • 3.1. Demonstrates a mastery of end user computer skills of the RIS (Imagecast, VIP, Synapse, Syngo Dynamics, Event Reporting) by accurately and independently performing related tasks such as exam scheduling, completion, document scanning etc.
  • 3.2. Accurately edits/completes examinations in Imagecast to ensure proper billing and medical record documentation and verifies transmission of all images to Synapse for review and interpretation by the radiologist in accordance with departmental policy.
  • 3.3. Assists support services (Scheduling, Transport, Nursing etc.) with scheduling and patient preparation for patients to ensure appropriate utilization of service.
  • 3.4. Reports and documents designated quality assurance responsibilities such as:
  • 3.5. Always answers telephone in a pleasant and courteous manner and correctly directs phone calls to RTAS for reports, with no more than one documented complaints per review year, as recorded by supervisor.
  • 4. Participates in various teaching and/or learning opportunities in order to further his/her own personal knowledge and to assist in the expanding the knowledge of others.
  • 4.1. Maintains active professional registration/certification and provides documentation as recorded by coordinator/manager.
  • 4.2. Maintains current CPR certification and keeps current with mandated hospital Healthstream training modules. Provides documentation as recorded by coordinator/manager.
  • 4.3. Attends on site continuing education programs offered to assist with achieving the necessary required CME credits for maintaining an active RDMS/RDCS status as recorded by coordinator/manager.
  • 4.4. Provides clinical instruction of exam protocols and procedures to sonographers, students and physicians as observed by Educational Coordinator/Manager and input provided from students.
  • 4.5. Proactively seeks the opportunities to further knowledge and expertise in their
  • 4.6. Profession as documented by advancements in degree/certification, job related seminars
  • 4.7. membership in professional societies.
  • 5. Employee follows established safety precautions and procedures in the performance of all duties in order to ensure a safe environment.
  • 5.1. Operates equipment and performs job related duets in a safe manner, following all procedures, with no more than one non-serious variance in the evaluation period.
  • 5.2. Demonstrates an understanding of body mechanics and use of patient lifting devices when appropriate.
  • 5.3. Practices proper infection control and sterile technique when needed with all procedures as observed by physician staff or coordinator/manager.
  • 5.4. Maintains a complete understanding of emergency procedures and equipment as observed by coordinator/manager.
  • 5.5. Maintains a clean and safe work environment. Recognizes and performs tasks needed to foster safe and quality patient care. Ensures supplies required for procedures are available prior to and during the examination to maximize patient safety and service efficiency.
  • 5.6. Ensures work area is free of expired supplies and medications
  • 6. Employee's general standards of performance and conduct conform to Hospital policy so that the best possible patient care may be provided to the patient.
  • 6.1. Interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors, physicians and fellow employees are fostered in a courteous and friendly manner with no more than one valid complaints in a 12 month period, as evidenced by patient satisfaction surveys, patient interviews, physician and employee input.
  • 6.2. Employee is neat, well groomed, and observes the Hospital dress code, wears identification badge while on duty, 100% of the time, as observed by the supervisor.
  • 6.3. Employee does not abuse or take advantage of Paid Time Off, as documented by attendance records or time sheets.
  • 6.4. Employee provides proper notification for absences or tardiness and schedules time off in accordance with departmental policy, 95% of the time, as observed by supervisor.
  • 6.5. Employee is ready to work and on time at the start of assigned shift, 95% of the time, as observed by the supervisor.
  • 6.6. When requested, employee is willing to work overtime or adjust personal schedule to accommodate the workload, 90% of the time, as noted by the supervisor.
  • 6.7. Employee takes corrective action to improve performance on problem areas when pointed out, within two weeks, as observed by supervisor.
  • 6.8. Employee recognizes and performs duties which need to be performed, such as offering assistance to others when own assignments are completed, 98% of the time, as observed by supervisor.

    Other information:

    EDUCATION:

    Graduation from high school or equivalent, supplemented by successful completion of a Radiologic Technologist program and at least one (1) year of specialized Ultrasound training or equivalent.

    EXPERIENCE:

    Demonstrated technical skills to meet entry level standards of routine sonography., RDMS and / or RDCS certification required.

    SPECIAL_SKILLS:

    Proficient in routine ultrasound imaging techniques, above average knowledge of computer / Pacs applications, and good organizational and communication/customer service skills.
    ACCOUNTABILITY:

    Must meet the performance expectations as defined in the Sonographer 1 position description. Performance and competency will be assessed continually and reviewed annually by supervisor/manager. Any areas that are determined to be unsatisfactory will require additional training and re-evaluation within 90 days.
    COMPLEXITY:

    Demonstrates planning and decision making skills necessary to manage a patient schedule with minimal assistance and utilize ultrasound equipment efficiently. Active participant in clinical research and teaching and training of new technical staff and students.
    PHYSICAL_DEMAND:

    Must be able to lift (patient transfers) and push 40 lbs (portable US equipment).
