Obtains blood samples, as required from Hospital inpatients and outpatients. Performs a number of clerical duties as assigned.

Responsibilities: 1. Phlebotomy
1.1 Uses proper patient identification and specimen labeling procedures according to Laboratory policy
1.2 Successfully obtains blood from all age groups using venipuncture, finger stick and heel stick techniques
1.3 Successfully performs drug screens and PKU collections
1.4 Keeps phlebotomy area clean and adequately stocked with phlebotomy supplies at all times
2. Accessioning and receiving Specimens
2.1 Accurately and timely receives specimens into the laboratory
2.2 Accurately creates and receives batches
2.3 Performs rounding to wards for urine and culture collection
2.4 Investigates and documents problems with unacceptable specimens
3. Customer Service
3.1 Uses AIDET principles when performing phlebotomy
3.2 Uses Patient/Family center values and conducts all activities with respect for the rights and wishes of patients,visitors and patient families
3.3 Uses appropriate phone etiquette
3.4 Demonstrates concerns for patient comfort and privacy
4.1 Interacts professionally with all members of the hospital staff
4.2 Willingness to help co-workers if needed
4.3 Utilizes appropriate channels of communication reguarding patient care issues and staff problems

5. Problem solving
5.1 Reviews patient vouchers for accuracy and corrects them as indicated
5.2 Immediately notifies supervisor or designee when unable to resolve a problem
5.3 Assists in tracking lost/misplaced specimens
5.4 follows appropriate down time procedures
6. Investigates and documents problems with unacceptable specimens
6.1 Accurately orders tests in the hospital and laboratory computer systems
6.2 Instructs patients in proper collection of samples for specific purposes (Sterile urine collection, drug screens including Chain of Custody, etc).
6.3 Prepares and distributes laboratory reports
6.4 Other duties as assigned
7. Regulation Compliance
7.1 Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety
7.2 Complies with established safety policies for chemical handling, storage and disposal
7.3 Operates equipment and performs all procedures in a safe manner as instructed
7.4 Ensure a safe work environment by complying with established procedures
8. Other duties
8.1 Accurately prepares all specimens sent to reference laboratories
8.2 Acts as a outreach phlebotomist when needed
8.3 Assists the courier in specimen pick up when needed
Equivalent of four years of high school education
Prior training or experience in phlebotomy
Certified or certified eligible with National Phlebotomy Association preferred. Valid Driver?s license and the ability to be covered by the Hospital?s auto insurance required.
Ability to interact professionally with patients, visitors, physicians, and members of other Hospital Departments. Membership in a professional organization preferred. Prior training or experience in phlebotomy. Basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
