Job Description

Provides supply and physical assistance to the professional staff and department in fulfilling the mission of Rehabilitation Services in providing quality and cost effective care to patients. Assists in keeping the department clean, stocked and in a regulatory ready condition.

  • 1. Assists therapists with patient care under their direct supervision. Also is responsible for maintaining equipment, supplies in an operational readiness condition to avoid unnecessary delays in patient treatments.
  • 1.1. Assists with patient care daily as available, requested and instructed by the therapist. Prepares treatment area and obtains equipment/supplies prior to the treatment session.
  • 1.2. Participates with "equipment roundup" daily (walkers, wheelchairs, stretchers, canes, crutches) returning equipment to appropriate areas in the department, cleaning it as needed.
  • 1.3. Wipes down wheelchairs and stretchers with germicide at the end of the day and between patients as needed.
  • 1.4. Identifies faulty equipment and documents on engineering clipboards appropriately. Notifies supervisor/designee promptly of faulty equipment and delays in repair.
  • 1.5. Transports patients as required.
  • 2. Maintains work area to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the department so that the best possible patient care may be provided to the patient.
  • 2.1. Restocks inventory weekly or more frequently if needed. Identifies additional items needed and generates an order for the supplies/equipment.
  • 2.2. Launders department hot pack covers and returns them to the gym monthly.
  • 2.3. Assures that the work area is neat at the beginning and end of the day. Cleans equipment and work area between patients and as needed.
  • 2.4. Performs environmental rounds weekly to identify anything in need of repair. Also reviews preventive maintenance/ electrical check stickers. Removes any broken equipment or expired stickered equipment from service and notifies a manager.
  • 3. Performs other department related duties as assigned by the manager/designee in order to contribute to the efficient operation of the department.
  • 3.1. Covers for other Associates needed in a pleasant and efficient manner.
  • 3.2. As needed or assigned, answers the phones, identifying department and self within four (4) rings, in a courteous manner. Relays verbal and written messages in a timely and accurate manner. Screens phone calls appropriately. Pages department staff for calls of an important nature within five (5) minutes of receiving the call. Provides staff with required information accurately.
  • 3.3. Utilizes the computer to collect and enter data, access the EMR to scan documents or gather information as required for department operations, and for hospital email.
  • 3.4. Assists with the training/orienting of other staff regarding department procedure and policy as requested and instructed by supervisor/designee, and observed by the supervisor/designee.
  • 3.5. Correctly identifies each patient's therapist utilizing the EMR, caseload sheets, active lists and other means as appropriate.
  • 3.6. Processes Daily Stat Sheets accurately. Contacts therapists for missing information each morning. Identifies to supervisor any problems preventing completion of the forms in a timely manner.
  • 3.7. Keeps adequate supply of forms/packets readily available for use.
  • 3.8. Performs scanning, copying, filing and other computer tasks as required.
  • 4. Manages the Hydro Therapy area to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the whirlpool area so that the best possible patient care may be provided to the patient.
  • 4.1. Stocks linen and Central Sterile supplies in an orderly manner. Stocks supplies and rotates supplies to ensure none are expired. Brings supplies to CSS at the end of each day.
  • 4.2. Prepares hydro area as needed during the day including mixes soap and places expiration dates on containers.
  • 4.3. Assists therapist in removing dressings and positions patients in tanks as soon as whirlpool is available (if cleared by PT, and after patient's first time to whirlpool).
  • 4.4. Sets up new dressings as per hydro write ups using appropriate technique. Prepares topical according to therapist write-up to include as needed Dakins, normal saline and sterile water. Discards Dakins, opened saline and opened sterile water at the end of each day and weekly discards medications of discharged patients.
  • 4.5. Independently cleans hydrotherapy before and after patient and at the end of the day.
  • 4.6. Notifies supervisor/designee promptly of potential or actual shortages (linen, supplies, equipment, oxygen) or operational problems, including identifying the need to re-rope carriers each day.
  • 4.7. Takes inventory, compiles and submits complete and accurate storeroom order, stocks received orders.
  • 4.8. Performs monthly servicing of the splinting tray and hydrocollator units (in gym and hydro areas)
  • 4.9. Takes tank cultures the last Thursday of each month.
  • 4.10. Performs environmental rounds weekly in order to ensure proper equipment functioning, maintenance stickers and environmental cleanliness and notifies supervisor/designee promptly of faulty equipment.
  • 4.11. Checks splinting tray, hydrocollator and coldpack temperatures and appropriately documents on sheets daily. Replaces sheets monthly. Notifies supervisor/designee of problems.
  • 4.12. Assists with patient care daily as available, requested and instructed by the therapist.
  • 4.13. Consistently stocks PLWS carts accurately throughout the day. Accurately set up supplies as needed for each treatment. Cleans equipment appropriately per guidelines.
  • 4.14. Transports patients as required.

    Other information:


    High School graduate. Actively enrolled in, or an unlicensed graduate of, a physical therapy, occupational therapy or speech language pathology program.


    One (1) to two (2) years of patient care experience preferred.


    Job requires dexterity to perform support services for the therapist. Moderate amount of physical effort required, including (1) intermittent sitting, standing (may be constant at times depending on assignment), lifting, bending, and pushing/pulling, (2) constant walking at times (depending on assignment), and (3) occasional heavy lifting (30-50 lbs). Must be able to maintain a busy pace throughout the day. Must be able to accurately read and utilize metric measurements, calibrate and report findings on equipment, setup and maintain a sterile/clean field. Able to apply infection control precautions to multiple situations.

    Has access to restricted patient information and must maintain confidentiality of patient information; able to problem solve conflicts; exhibits strong positive interpersonal skills; adheres to department and hospital policies and procedures; displays self motivation. Responsible for accuracy in the performance of all work..

    Has direct contact with patients and staff. Must be capable of developing personal relationships with others to facilitate treatment.

    Must be able to physically support patients while assisting therapists. Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs.
