Nocturnist 7x7 - Bridgeport Hospital
The primary function of the Nighttime Attending Physician working for the Hospitalist Service is to provide
comprehensive care to medicine inpatients primarily through admissions and cross coverage.
Responsibilities: 1. 1. Clinical Practice:
At the instruction of the Associate Director(s), Director or designee provides care to medical inpatients
assigned to the Hospitalist Service, ensuring safe, high quality, efficient, and patient-centered care.
For new inpatients, obtains a comprehensive health history, performs complete physical examinations,
reviews imaging and lab data, and institutes initial plan of care.
Assesses and identifies the healthcare needs of assigned medical patients; develops and implements a
comprehensive patient-centered plan of care.
For patients on the Hospitalist service, and as required on other medical services, provides timely cross
As necessary, introduces self to patients and their families as the Hospitalist Service Physician
responsible for their care during the night shift. Explains Hospitalist Service/team model to
newly admitted patients and their families and leaves a business card and/or picture card with the
1 .5 At the end of each shift, ensures completion of appropriate sign-out for all new and assigned patients.
Enters self as Attending Physician in EMR for assigned patients.
Performs necessary invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, as credentialed by YNHH Medical Staff Office. Physicians must maintain privileges for these procedures, by
performing the minimum number of required procedures as required by the Medical Staff Office.
Coordinates patient care by communicating with Consultants, PMD, PA's, APRN's, RN's and regularly
communicates patient treatment plans to patients and their families.
Takes call as necessary to provide 24/7 coverage
Rotates responsibility for new patient admissions and completion of medical consults with other
Hospitalist team members.
1 .10 Provides support and offers assistance to other team members.
Provides supervision of residents, fellows and Physician Assistants/Nurse Practitioners working on the
Hospitalist Service; supervises and provides teaching to PA students. 2. 2. Education:
Identifies information needs of team members, patients and families. Regularly provides related
teaching and education to staff nurses and Physician Assistant students.
Acts as a clinical resource for residents and fellows. Maximizes opportunities in the clinical setting for
education of staff, patients and families.
Assists in orientation of new physicians working for the Hospitalist Service.
Promotes the dissemination of recent clinical evidence to promote best practice and improve patient
Participates in continuing medical education (CME) activity annually and ensures that CME meets
medical staff reappointment criteria. 3. 3. Quality Improvement/Customer Satisfaction
3 .1 Participates in team based quality improvement and patient/customer satisfaction initiatives.
Responds to patient complaints and reports patient satisfaction concerns to Patient Relations
Department, Associate Director(s), and/or Director so that appropriate action may be taken prior to

various projects related to the Hospitalist Service or organizational initiatives.
Ensures medical record documentation meets YNHHS and State and Federal guidelines ; clearly
documents patient diagnosis and medical information as required for legal and billing purposes. 4. 4. Patient Safety
4 .1 Immediately reports any concerns about patient safety to Associate Director(s) and/or Director.
4 .2 Follows all YNHHS patient safety policies and procedures for healthcare providers.
4 .3 As a healthcare provider, is responsible for reporting adverse or potential adverse events related to
patient care. 5. 5. Operation 5 .1 Follows all NEMG and YNHHS policies and procedures. Responds to pages in a timely manner and notifies administration if pager is lost, stolen, or malfunctioning. 5 .2 Completes all mandatory training requirements related to HIPAA, Emergency Management, patient safety, or as assigned. 5 .3 Ensures the required licensure and certifications are current and provides copies to NEMG. 5 .4 Attends all team and department meetings in person or via telephone conferencing, as required. Works collaboratively with the Associate Director, Director and designee to ensure goals and objectives of the department are successfully met. 5 .5 Bills for all inpatient services as appropriate. Rotates responsibility with others on the Hospitalist team for creating nightly patient assignment. Ensures timely communication of patient responsibilities to appropriate patient care units. 5 .6 Dresses and acts professionally at all times. 5 .7 Work hour responsibilities: 7 nights in a row on as follows: M to F: 10 hour shifts (either 9pm to 7 am or 10pm to 8 am); Sat and Sunday 12 hour shifts 8pm to 8 am
M.D. degree, full residency training and Board eligibility/certification in internal medicine mandatory. Must have
attending medical staff privileges at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
One (1) to two (2) years caring for medicine inpatients preferred.
Hold a valid Connecticut medical license, CT Controlled Substance Registration and Federal DEA Certificate.
Excellent clinical, interpersonal and organizational skills. Ability to work independently

Accountable to conduct accurate and appropriate evaluation, care, and coordination of care of medicine inpatients
Evaluates, manages, and coordinates care of medicine inpatients as part of the Physician -Physician
Assistant/Nurse Practitioner team. Works with Director and/or Operations Manager on special projects as
MMR is required. Varivax (chicken pox vaccine) or evidence of prior chicken pox is required. Hepatitis B (or signed
declination) is required for those with potential exposure to blood/body fluids.
Tdap and influenza vaccination are required
7 nights in a row on as follows: M to F: 10 hour shifts ( either 9pm to 7 am or 10pm to 8 am); Sat and Sunday 12 hour shifts 8pm to 8 am
