Summary:
Develop, facilitate, implement and sustain programs and initiatives designed to improve process efficiencies and positively improve value by enhancing quality, safety and patient experience while driving down cost across Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS). The director translates strategic goals and objectives from senior leadership and implements initiatives to meet those objectives. The director creates, prioritizes, directs and oversees mission critical Clinical Redesign initiatives. In collaboration with senior clinical and administrative leadership, deploys resources by matching resources to appropriate initiatives. The Director functions as an internal consultant to senior management, internal and external consultants relative to process and outcome evaluation and improvement.

Responsibilities:
  • 1. Focuses resources on mission critical initiatives as defined by senior leadership.
  • 2. Serves as a senior management resource by providing expert knowledge of quality improvement theory/methodologies, statistical analysis, and problem solving relative to individual hospital and system wide workflows and processes.
  • 3. Inspires others to live the Clinical Redesign mission through collaboration and integration of Clinical Redesign methodologies throughout the health system. Achieved by actively soliciting project ideas, presenting at national conferences, identifying and presenting at senior level management forums on a recurring basis, ensuring active bidirectional communication with frontline staff and creating and managing an active publication pipeline.
  • 4. Forge internal relationships across the organization by partnering with ambulatory services, finance and patient experience teams.
  • 5. Forge external relationships by increasing engagement with local centers for innovation, Yale University, University of New Haven and other institutions to drive innovative solutions.
  • 6. Actively engage with internal teams with similar missions e.g. Population Health, QISS, Clinical Outcome Leaders, residents, fellows and the APRN/PA community.
  • 7. Scale our capabilities across and through the health system by overseeing efforts to actively teach others the Clinical Redesign project and portfolio management methodologies, disseminate project management tools, to support system wide Clinical Redesign work in new ways.
  • 8. Ensure that the Clinical Redesign team engages in the highest value opportunities
  • 9. Oversees the collection of data to support value-add improvements in clinical outcomes, operational efficiencies and/or improved financial performance. Directs the development of meaningful and impactful analysis based on collected data to support changes in operations.
  • 10. Identifies priorities for improvement and deploys resources to match skill sets with project needs.
  • 11. Accountable for identifying recommending, implementing, evaluating best practices using a data driven, methodical approach to problem solving and sustaining achievements, in areas of assignment
  • 12. Oversees the development of detailed project plans created by Clinical Redesign Project managers to ensure the efficient and timely implementation of process improvements. Responsible for managing assigned team to ensure project plan objectives remain on target and are achieved in accordance with the project plan deadlines.
  • 13. Oversees project milestones, priorities, resource requirements, and communication strategies relative to major Clinical Redesign initiatives. Develops and mentors embedded resources in skill sets necessary for effective project management.
  • 14. Cultivates and maintains strong relationships with senior leadership across the health system.
  • 15. Conducts timely orientation and annual performance reviews on assigned staff; counsels and develops performance improvement plans as required. Actively participates in and supports the development, mentoring and coaching of staff.
  • 16. Leads by example, successfully demonstrating the personal attributes defined in the Yale New Haven Health System Mission, Vision and Values.
  • 17. Understands YNHHS vision, goals and strategies and communicates to others. Able to set clear goals and directions.

    Other information:

    EDUCATION:

    Public or Health Services Administration required. Familiarity and experience with deploying the IHI model for quality improvement is preferred.

    EXPERIENCE:

    Minimum of ten (10) years professional work experience, preferably in healthcare or management consulting. Experience in data analysis, reporting and effective presentation required. Previous project management and leadership experience required and with demonstrated experience in leading a performance improvement team of professionals focused on hospital organizational priorities with significant impact in expense reduction, revenue enhancement, cost avoidance and clinical operations.

    SPECIAL_SKILLS:

    Superior administrative, managerial, technical, analytical and negotiating management skills. Must have excellent communication and organizational skills. Must have formal training in performance improvement methodologies and behavioral change techniques. Demonstrated ability to effectively conduct various types of analysis including: process, marketplace, organizational financial, operational and staffing. Demonstrated ability to organize resources and establish priorities. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to navigate across departments and delivery networks to achieve results. Demonstrated ability to successfully resolve complex problems across multiple departments and/or delivery networks. Serves as the department?s subject matter expert and resources in area of expertise (patient care, finance, operations etc.)
    ACCOUNTABILITY:

    Accountable for the development and effective management of assigned initiatives and staff. Has responsibility for development, interpretation, and application of policies, budgets, and project plans. Is a member of and provides technical and administrative advice to the Clinical Redesign Leadership Team. Accountable for attaining mission critical targets.
    COMPLEXITY:

    This position is responsible for directly managing change in various departments across the health system and guiding and mentoring CLINICAL REDESIGN staff performing similar functions at various levels throughout the health system. Assigned projects are extremely complex and may be financial, clinical or organizational in nature. Stays current on healthcare regulations and practices that may have potential impact on operation.
