Performs a variety of clinical laboratory tests and blood bank testing in a way that ensures accurate and timely reporting of diagnostically important information in support of patients at the Shoreline lab. This is achieved by the use of technical skill and knowledge of instrumentation and principles to recognize problems, synthesize alternatives and apply solutions. Applies excellent customer service skills and acts as a member of a cohesive team.
Responsibilities: 1. Technical Skills - Demonstrates technical competency by performing a wide variety of techniques related to chemistry and hematology testing.

1.1. Assesses the specimen according to established procedural criteria, documents specimen problems, rejects inappropriate samples and requests new specimen(s) when appropriate. 1.2. Accessions lab specimens daily in a timely manner and with accuracy to ensure all test requests are properly entered into lab computer system. Follows up on test order problems immediately. 1.3. Understands basic principles of chemistry and hematology procedures including analytical theory, principles of quality control, reference and reportable ranges, critical values, clinical significance and techniques and equipment used. 1.4. Performs tests according to laboratory procedures with acceptable accuracy and precision. 1.5. Prepares and correctly identifies specimen according to laboratory spinning manual with no more than two documented incidents of mishandling. 1.6. Learns new procedures readily according to training schedule. Takes initiative to maintain skills on infrequently performed tests. 1.7. Keeps work area neat, disinfects after each use according to laboratory policies. 2. Instrumentation Skills - Demonstrates sufficient knowledge and skills to independently operate chemistry and hematology instrumentation and point-of-care devices. 2.1. Performs instrument maintenance according to schedule including documentation, within established time limits. 2.2. Has ability to troubleshoot instrumentation and computer hardware. Perform basic troubleshooting when necessary. 2.3. Handles STAT and routine samples so as to minimize turn-around-time and maximize reporting of clinically useful information. 2.4. Recognizes instrument problems when they occur by responding to instrument alarms, error flags and quality control problems. Initiates trouble shooting procedures in a systematic manner. 2.5. Reports values according to laboratory procedure, including timely reporting of critical values to appropriate person(s). Documents critical values and other reporting 2.6. Independently evaluates results for acceptability based on proper instrument operation, plausibility of results, previous patient data. Able to respond to discrepancies. 2.7. Demonstrates ability to perform basic instrument operation including routine and STAT modes (if any) menu options, and response to error flags. 3. General laboratory skills and knowledge - Performs tasks that assist with overall operations of the Shoreline laboratory services according to laboratory policies and in compliance with regulatory guidelines. 3.1. Takes responsibility for all reagents and supplies associated with assigned tests to ensure adequate materials are available for testing. 3.2. Participates in CAP testing as established by laboratory and regulatory procedures. 3.3. Demonstrates organizational skills to prioritize work according work according to urgency and medical need. Performs multiple tasks to optimize efficiency. 3.4. Follows safety procedures and uses appropriate safety materials and personal protective equipment. 3.5. Is able to efficiently use both the laboratory information system (Soft) and the Epic system to order or retrieve lab data as required. 3.6. Maintains compliance with all computer access passwords 3.7. Completes, in a timely fashion, all documentation such as log books, problem logs, error reports equipment maintenance, reagent labeling and refrigerator temperatures. 3.8. Performs and documents required quality control following established procedures and maintains accurate and legible records of all QC testing. 3.9. Interprets and takes proper actions following established procedures for QC results outside of acceptable ranges. 3.10. Performs support functions related to laboratory testing on a daily basis, including but not limited to calling in lab results, faxing of reports, filing of report copies. 4. Blood Banking - Performs blood bank procedures in a responsible and efficient manner to ensure the accurate and timely release of blood products. 5.1. Receives requests for blood bank products or services, and checks for pertinent patient information and special needs on the requisition. Prioritizes requests so that medical emergencies come first. Competency is evaluated through direct observation and record review. 5.2. Selects appropriate blood products to ensure safe and effective transfusion therapy. Issues blood and components according to Standard Operating Procedure. Competency is evaluated through direct observation and record review. 5.3. Understands the storage conditions of blood and components, and assures that storage requirements are met. Competency is evaluated through direct observation and record review. 5.4. Understands operation, quality control requirements and preventative maintenance required on the blood bank equipment used in the laboratory. Performs routine equipment QC and PM as directed; refers problems beyond the scope of ability to a supervisor. 5.5. Clearly, legibly and accurately completes any hand written record. Corrects handwriting mistakes according to Blood Bank Standard Operating Procedure.
Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology or equivalent with MT (ASCP) certification or equivalent., One (1) to two (2) years experience in an accredited Clinical Laboratory.
Previous generalist experience.
Working knowledge of equipment, instrumentation, and materials used in a Clinical Laboratory.
Performs a variety of routine tests and procedures, prepares and standardizes reagents, and performs routine quality control., Prepare reports of such tests in a timely fashion and report the findings to the proper individuals. Excellent communication skills, customer service skills, and the ability to work as a team member of a multi-disciplinary team.
