Under the supervision of the Diagnostic Radiology / Breast Imaging Manager and/or Assistant Chief Technologist, performs a wide variety of technical and professional duties utilizing complex imaging equipment to produce quality mammography images as requested for subsequent interpretation by the radiologist. All duties are performed according to departmental and organizational policies and procedures., Promotes service excellence in all interactions as outlined in the Key Behaviors in the YNHH Core Success Factors. To meet the staffing needs of the department, as necessary, Diagnostic Radiology staff may be assigned at any of the YNHH Diagnostic Radiology locations, regardless of your regularly assigned work location.
Responsibilities: 1. Performs quality and efficient mammographic examinations, utilizing appropriate age specific standards, to provide a source for interpretation by radiologists and viewing by referring physicians. 1.1. Identifies correct patient and requested examination 100% of the time as observed by supervisors and interpreting radiologists. 1.2. Reviews prior films and/or studies, reports, and current requisitions to determine the proper study is to be performed prior to performing the examination. 1.3. Follows routine protocols and/or physicians' specific directions for examinations in assigned area. Routinely exhibits good planning and organizational skills to provide timely completion of all exams as well as the entire daily schedule as observed by supervisor. 1.4. Positions patients properly for requested exam as per ACR positioning guidelines. Upon performing the examination, reviews prior films and/or studies to determine that present study does exhibit as much, if not more, breast tissue that prior studies when possible. 1.5. Selects proper technical factors on an individual patient basis to produce optimal mammographic images. 2. Operates mammographic and computer equipment to ensure proper technical results and is aware of and adheres to ACR and FDA/MQSA guidelines and policies. 2.1. Conducts daily inspection of mammographic equipment, Ultrasound machines (where applicable), procedural equipment, and supporting RIS systems, PenRad reporting system, and PACs system to ensure proper performance. Reports all malfunctions to supervisor and/or makes necessary contacts to service and/or IT staff. 2.2. Uses proper identifying markers and initials to identify proper patient position and performing technologist on all images. In addition, uses proper marking devices and/or techniques to identify problem areas, scars, nipples, and skin variations when applicable on images. 2.3. Performs proper QA on all images to ensure they exist on Hologic viewing system and Synapse PACs system. Informs supervisor and/or IT staff of any malfunctions or missing images. 2.4. Proper and thorough use of the Imagecast system to complete the correct examination in a timely and efficient manner. On the occasions that an exam needs to be changed, cancelled, rescheduled, or adjusted in any manner, the technologist consistently performs necessary adjustments correctly. 2.5. Edits and/or enters correct exam codes to ensure accurate billing and medical record documentation of the exam. 3. Prepares examination room to provide a Clean & Safe environment for patients, ensuring cleanliness and adequate supplies in the performance of all exams. 3.1. Notifies supervisor of any need(s) for necessary supplies in a timely manner to prevent total depletion of stock. 3.2. Notifies supervisor of any need for environmental repair in a timely manner. 3.3. Replaces any used supplies immediately after patient is dismissed. 3.4. Executes cleaning of exam room before and after patient exam/procedure is performed. Demonstrates a concern for cleanliness of exam rooms as well as entire mammography area. Regularly maintains equipments and area in a neat and orderly fashion on own initiative as observed by supervisor. 3.5. Complies with all regulatory requirements to maintain compliance with department, hospital, and governing bodies' policies, procedures, and regulations, including proper hand sanitizing. 4. Performs quality and compassionate patient care, utilizing appropriate age specific standards, in order to ensure patient cooperation, safety, and satisfaction as documented in Press Ganey Surveys. 4.1. Thoroughly explains the procedure to ensure patient physical and emotional comfort and cooperation with zero occurrences of patient complaints per year. 4.2. Is attentive to patient care needs, and expeditiously calls for physician support as required, and is evidenced by incident reports and physician input. 4.3. Is aware and responsive to the concerns and personal needs of all patients and their families. 4.4. Reports to assigned work area ready to perform work on time as noted by supervisor. 4.5. Actively participates in all sectional, departmental, and hospital wide initiatives to promote and ensure patient satisfaction and service excellence. 5. Exhibits an attitude of teamwork while displaying courtesy and professionalism toward co-workers, supervisors, and physicians. 5.1. Interacts with supervisor, physicians, and support service personnel in a professional and courteous manner in order to facilitate the scheduling and implementation of mammographic exams/procedures. 5.2. Consistently displays proper phone etiquette and professionalism when interacting with referring physicians or other sections and/or departments inside and outside of the organization. 5.3. Regularly provides supervisor with both negative and positive feedback in a constructive manner. 5.4. Interacts and provides input during staff meetings and/or group sessions while using methods and approaches beneficial to the section. 5.5. Performs other duties and assignments as asked by supervisor in order for the section to run effectively providing proper patient care and customer service. 6. Participates in various learning activities in order to further his/her own personal knowledge in order to meet all ACR, FDA/MQSA, State, and ARRT guidelines. 6.1. Receives, on a yearly basis, a minimum of five (5) ECE credits Category A in the area of mammography and provides documentation of such to supervisor on a yearly basis and/or as needed for ACR, and FDA/MQSA inspections. 6.2. Receives a minimum of twelve (12) ECE credits per year (24 biannually) in order to meet all continuing education guidelines of the ARRT and provides documentation of such to supervisor at time of annual review. (5 ECE credits earned in mammography each year may be applied toward necessary 12 yearly and/or 24 biannually). 6.3. Is receptive to teaching technologists and/or students in the area of mammography as observed by supervisor, radiology staff, student coordinators, and radiologists. 6.4. Fulfills all necessary hospital training courses (Healthstream), on time and in full, which are available via the Intranet. This criterion must be met for technologist to earn any increase in pay during each yearly review. 6.5. Participates in all sectional instruction and/or training. Openly accepts sectional, departmental, and hospital wide changes and /or implementations of policies and procedures. 7. To enhance the patient experience in Diagnostic radiology all staff will be responsible to achieve patient satisfaction scores set by the department on the Test & Treatment section of our Press Ganey Survey. 7.1. 1.Staff will present themselves in a friendly and courteous manner; Staff will identify themselves and their role while encouraging a Patient and Family Center experience.
1.2Staff will fully explain procedure and ask if the patient has any additional questions about the procedure.
1.3Staff will address any comfort issues a patient may have prior to starting procedure.
1.4Staff will thank patient once procedure is completed and ask the patient if they have any additional questions.
1.5Staff must meet the above goals and fiscal year threshold value, which was last fiscal year actual for a 2 rating on review.
2.Staff must meet the above goals and exceed fiscal year threshold value by +.2 for a 3 rating on review.
3.Staff must meet the above goals and exceed fiscal year threshold value by +.4 for a 4 rating on review.
Graduation from an A.M.A. approved Radiologic Technology program. AS degree required.
Demonstrated technical skills to meet entry level standards of routine mammography., .
RT (R,M) required. CT State License Required. CPR Certification Preferred.
Proficient in routine breast imaging and/or screening mammography procedures, above average knowledge of computer / Pacs applications, and good organizational and communication/customer service skills.
Must meet the performance expectations as defined in the Mammography, Technologist 1 position description. Performance and competency will be assessed continually and, reviewed annually by supervisor/manager. Any areas that are determined to be unsatisfactory will require, additional training and re-evaluation within 90 days.
Demonstrates planning and decision making skills necessary to manage a patient, schedule with minimal assistance and utilize breast imaging equipment efficiently., Active participant in clinical research and teaching and training of new technical staff and students., Works various shifts and days on a rotational basis as needed by the section in order to provide the best possible, service to customers and patients.
