The polysomnographic technologist, under the direction of the supervisor and the Program Manager, prepares the patient, conducts overnight physiologic studies-polysomnograms(PSG), collects vital signs and other pertinent information to ensure proper interpretation by the physician /polysomnographer in accordance with established policies and procedures as assigned. Maintains vigilance in a non -stimulating environment and knows when to consult the supervisor physician regarding the patients status. Attention

Responsibilities: 1. Under the direction of the supervisor, prepares the patient, conducts overnight physiologic studies , polysomnograms (PSG), and collects pertinent information to ensure proper interpretation by the Physician/Polysomnographer in accordance with established polices and procedures as assigned. . 1.1. Formats optical disks for data acquisition, retrieves and archives data into the computer system. Anticipates and recognizes computer hard and optical disk data space limitations, transfers and archives data to prevent data loss during the overnight study 1.2. Under the direction of the supervisor, prepares the pateint by explaining all procedures involved in setting up the polysomnogram. 1.3. Sets up and calibrates monitoring equipment including computer interfaces. Measures and applies appropriate EEG electrodes, applies appropriate EKG, EMG, and EOG monitoring electrodes, and places and securely attaches recording transducers to measure airflow, respiratory effort, oximetry, and capnography and performs physiological calibration. 1.4. Institutes "lights out" and notes patient data, monitors the patient polysomnography, recognizes and records clinical and physiological events such as standard sleep states in infants through teenagers, notes and corrects equipment malfunctions during the PSG and alters patient's environment to insure the required sleep/wake data. 1.5. Under the direction of the physician, initiates and titrates nasal CPAP therapy based on physician's orders and established protocols. 1.6. Ensures that all quality standards have been performed and are acceptable prior to and during all patient testing procedures 1.7. Records pre and post test physiological calibration before sleep onset and after awakening, removes electrodes and transducers and assists patient with hygiene as necessary, including bathing and shampoo for young infants. 1.8. Follows YNHH and Sleep Center established safety precautions and procedures in the performance of all duties to insure a safe and clean environment 2. Recognizes and responds appropriately to patient's medical problems and physiological events, especially respiratory problems, seizures or cardiac dysrhythmias including notifying the Medical Director, activating emergency button for urgent help and administering supplemental oxygen or basic life support until help arrives. 2.1. Checks availability and functions of emergency equipment (suction, ambu, airway, 0xygen source) prior to study commencement. 2.2. Demonstrates a concern for cleanliness or self and work area on a daily basis. Practices universal infection control procedures. Collaboration with co-workers, physicians both within the hospital and the outside community. Assists and supports a learning environment. Assists new staff with understanding patient equipment set-ups. 3. Communicates and works in partnership with the staff, patients, families, and other disciplines. 3.1. Utilizes a professional manner. Dialogues and resolves patient care issues or conflicts. 3.2. Involves himself/herself in unit meetings/educational opportunities as pertinent. Displays commitment to professional growth and development by regular attendance at department meetings and educational programs and orientation participation. 4. Maintains vigilance in a non-stimulating environment and knows when to consult the nurse/physician regarding the patient's status. Attention to detail is critical since the quality of data from the PSG is solely the responsibility of the technologist 5. Majority of work is done overnight, ability to maintain wakefulness is essential. Reviews existing information in the patient record, examines orders and protocols for study, recognizes sleep/wake or respiratory complaints, sleep patterns and potential need for treatment intervention during testing, collects pertinent patient information to insure proper interpretation by the physician and communicates with ordering physician or center/lab director to clarify unclear or inappropriate orders and communicates information about the patient's status.
High school graduate. Previous education in allied health or life science is helpful in assimilating the normal and abnormal physiology, as well as in working with the sophisticated equipment used during the polysomnogram . Preferred: Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT), Register Sleep Technologist (RST) or NBRC Sleep DIsorder Specialist (SDS) or Registered Respiratory Therapist.
Three (3) years in Health Care related experience.
Minimum credential as a Registered Polysomnography Technologist (NBRC,BRPT, or AASM) , Registered Respiratory Therapist, RN, or LPN. Preferred: Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (BRPT), Register Sleep Technologist (AASM) or Sleep DIsorder Specialist (NBRC) or Registered Respiratory Therapist.

Has the ability to understand normal cardiorespiratory, neurologic, and sleep/wake physiology.
Attention to detail is critical, since the quality of data is solely the responsibility of the technologist. The individual must be able to maintain vigilance in a non-stimulating, overnight environment. Ability to troubleshoot problems as they arise.
Must have the ability to integrate a basic understanding of anatomy and physiology with sleep /wake pathology. Excellent communication skills are required for pediatric patient preparation, performance of complex physiological monitoring insuring patient safety and comfort, education about sleep disordered breathing, as well as for discussing patients and clinical situations with physicians. PSG studies use sophisticated medical equipment including computers, electroencephalographs, electrocardiographs, polygraphs, skin electrodes and adhesives, airflow and respiratory effort measuring devices, audio/video recording systems, nasal CPAP and other ventilatory assists devices under the supervision of RN/RT, pulse oximeters and end-tidal CO2 analyzers, thermometers and blood pressure cuffs, and disinfecting and sterilizing agents. Must understand the function of the equipment used to monitor and record breathing (airflow/effort), electroencephalogram (brain waves), electrocardiograms (heart rate and rhythms), electromyograms (muscle activity), pulse oximetry (blood oxygenation/saturations, and capnography (end-tidal carbon dioxide/ventilation). Must be able to assimilate data from several sources and anticipate initiation of care, in accordance with protocols, to prevent harm to the patient. Must recognize sleep and cardiorespiratory pathology when it occurs in the laboratory and respond with the appropriate interventions to ensure patient safety.
Overnight as well as flexible shifts. If not registered in sleep by the BRPT, NBRC or AASM the training curriculum for qualification for exam will be completed by employee within 7 months of hire. Passing the registry exam for sleep technologists will be completed within 13 months of hire.
