Summary:
Responsible for the evaluation and treatment of patients in a variety of rotating patient care areas. Performs other clinical, teaching and administrative duties as may be required.

Responsibilities:
  • 1. Clinical
  • 1.1. Able to interpret physician referrals to perform basic clinical evaluations.
  • 1.2. All patient care responsibilities will be performed consistent with age-specific criteria (see attached).
  • 1.3. Demonstrates technical skill and accuracy in performing basic treatments.
  • 1.4. Develops population specific treatment programs which reflect compliance with established clinical protocols where appropriate, monitors patient responses and terminates treatments when appropriate.
  • 1.5. Sets measurable and appropriate goals which reflect patient/family involvement and seeks appropriate assistance.
  • 1.6. Provides patient and family education.
  • 1.7. Initiates and maintains current records and reports concerning patient course, re-evaluates and updates goals, and plans as necessary, based on patient's response to treatment.
  • 1.8. Uses equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • 1.9. Reports malfunctioning or missing equipment to supervisor and takes corrective action to remove equipment from use.
  • 1.10. Assumes responsibility for order of working areas.
  • 1.11. Maintains a high standard of professional accountability with respect to safety, efficiency, effectiveness, ethics and legal issues.
  • 1.12. Demonstrates compliance with all hospital standards and regulations.
  • 1.13. Participates constructively in team conferences, rounds, clinics, and discharge planning, as appropriate.
  • 1.14. Utilizes Assistant and support staff and volunteers appropriately in the delivery of patient care.
  • 2. Educational
  • 2.1. Attends department in-services.
  • 2.2. Assists with orientation of staff as appropriate.
  • 2.3. Assists in orientation, education and guidance of support staff.
  • 2.4. Seeks opportunities to expand own knowledge of the profession and related fields.
  • 2.5. Meets required standards for documentation of attended inservices and Continuing Contact hours when applicable.
  • 3. Administration
  • 3.1. Complies with Hospital and Department Policies and Procedures.
  • 3.2. Participates in department Quality Assurance activities.
  • 3.3. Plans and organizes daily schedule optimally use time.
  • 3.4. Appropriately addresses patient coverage issues for scheduled time off.
  • 3.5. Carries patient load that reflects productivity standard of unit.
  • 3.6. Maintains documentation in accordance with hospital policy and regulatory requirements (HCFA, JCAHO, etc.).
  • 4. Clinical Supervision
  • 4.1. Participates in regular meetings with supervisor and/or team leader and reports pertinent information on a timely basis.
  • 4.2. Appropriately delegates responsibility to COTAs as required and maintains appropriate level of clinical supervision.
  • 4.3. Reports directly to area supervisor and indirectly to team leader.
  • 4.4. Provides clinical supervision to students as assigned.
  • 5. Human Relations Skills
  • 5.1. Demonstrates respect and regard for dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsive and courteous hospital environment.

    Other information:

    EDUCATION:

    Graduate of an accredited Occupational Therapy program. Must hold a valid Connecticut license or temporary permit. NBCOT certification preferred.

    EXPERIENCE:

    Clinical experience in behavioral health is required.

    SPECIAL_SKILLS:

    The individual should demonstrate knowledge in basic anatomy and physiology, psychology, occupational therapy theory, evaluations, and treatment techniques. Observation skills, communication skills (both verbal and written), and an ability to work with others in a synergistic manner are essential. The individual should also be willing and able to assume increased responsibilities as required.
    ACCOUNTABILITY:

    Accountable for providing quality patient care and adherence with professional code of ethics and applicable state and federal regulations. Actively supports the mission, goals, strategies, and policies of Yale-New Haven Hospital and the Department of Rehabilitation Services. Must perform all position responsibilities at a Meets Expectations level and maintain state licensure. Legally accountable for all tasks delegated to COTAs, support staff and students.
    COMPLEXITY:

    The individual must be able to implement occupational therapy evaluations and treatments in collaboration with other health team members. They must be able to monitor changes in the patient's condition and take appropriate action. Provides cogent summary of patient's status verbally and in writing. Provides educational experience to other staff.
    PHYSICAL_DEMAND:

    Must be able to lift 40 pounds in the performance of daily job requirements.
