Summary:
Directs and supervises all unit shift/department activities. Directs, educates and assists nursing staff in the provision of quality patient care according to department standards of practice and standards of care to maintain quality services. Assists Nurse Manager in providing leadership support to staff, scheduling and evaluating personnel. Plans, develops, facilitates and coordinates the operation of the unit/department.

Responsibilities:
  • 1. Essential Functions
  • 1.1. Assesses all needs of the patients on the unit and matches with staff competencies to provide needed services. Delegates patient care assignments to staff according to identified needs and abilities. Facilitates reassignments as needed based on patient volume, acuity and other unit needs.
  • 1.2. Facilitates communication among all team members, patients, families, physicians and other healthcare providers regarding goals of care. Shares pertinent assessment data and clinical knowledge with staff to improve job performance and quality of patient care.
  • 1.3. Uses critical thinking skills and judgment necessary to work with the nursing staff on the unit in implementing the medical plan of care, nursing interventions, and procedures as necessary for the care of the patient. Demonstrates basic clinical and technical skills according to established standards of practice. Anticipates potential changes in the patient's status and assesses the patient accordingly.
  • 1.4. Using the four tenets of Patient Family Centered Partnership facilitates the interdisciplinary team rounds- over see?s the team evaluation, effectiveness and patient's response to the plan of care.

  • 2.1. Adheres to The Westerly Hospital policies and procedures
  • 2.2. Adheres to the hospitals exposure control plans/blood- borne and airborne pathogens
  • 2.3. Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure the smooth operation of the department to provide quality patient care.
  • 2.4. Takes initiative to keep informed and updated on department and hospital information by attending appropriate meetings, checking and responding to e-mails and phone calls in a timely manner.
  • 3. Staff/Self Development
  • 3.1. Acts as a clinical resource and role model
  • 3.2. Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to safety of the organization and specific job related hazards.
  • 3.3. Takes initiative to keep informed and updated on department and hospital information by attending staff meetings, checking e-mails, and department posting.
  • 3.4. Actively participates in training and educational activities for one's own development.
  • 4. Staff/Self Development (continued)
  • 4.1. Actively participates in training and educational activities for other staff members
  • 4.2. Functions as a preceptor to new staff. Assists the manager and the clinical nurse educator in coordinating the orientation of new staff. Coordinates staff attendance at in-house educational opportunities.
  • 4.3. Provides feedback to Nurse Manager Employee performance reviews.
  • 4.4. Participates in quality improvement activities

    Other information:

    EDUCATION:

    Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required. BSN preferred.


    EXPERIENCE:

    Three ?five years of nursing experience or may substitute for direct ED experience.

    LICENSURE:

    Current state registration. Maintains BLS certification. Current Rhode Island Nursing License PALS within first year of employment ACLS within first year of employment Certification in specialty area required within 2 years of occupying position


    SPECIAL_SKILLS:

    ACCOUNTABILITY:

    Provides real time accountability of staff, problem solving and facilitator of patient and staff satisfaction. Provides real time accountability of staff, problem solving and facilitator of patient and staff satisfaction. Oversees the ED patient?s care by collaborating with physicians, staff and other disciplines to facilitate flow, maintain quality measures, ensure optimal and appropriate utilization of resources and advocates for patients and staff. Inspires, motivates and provides regular feedback to staff throughout the year in addition to accurate and meaningful annual performance evaluations. Assists the leadership team in establishing and implementing patient care policies and protocols, researches and keeps current in evidence-based processes and participates in unit and Hospital-wide committees and disseminates pertinent information to staff. Assist manager with hiring new staff utilizing the staff interview process. Assists manager with the development of the budget, works with staff to adjust resource allocations to demands. Performs other duties as assigned.
