While the Lactation Consultant (LC) works under the guidance of the Patient Care Manager - LDRP/NICU, (s)he practices independently to provide breastfeeding education, support, and organizational programming. Assesses knowledge and skill needs of new parents, consults regularly with breastfeeding mothers/couples on the LDRP and in the NICU, provides timely support/interventions to in-house and discharged mothers and evaluates lactation effectiveness. Provides direction and support for providers, including regular educational offerings. May be requested to consult with lactating mothers who are admitted to other units or whose breastfeeding child(ren) may be in-patients. Performs other duties as requested in order to maintain a high level service quality.
Responsibilities: 1. Assesses the mother's/couple's readiness and ability to breastfeed. Assesses lactation effectiveness. 2. Develops, communicates and documents an individualized plan to optimize breastfeeding for any patients with questions/concerns/problems in achieving or maintaining successful lactation. 3. Institute consistent breastfeeding follow-ups/referrals. 4. Establish and maintain a breastfeeding information line/hotline with appropriate follow-up/referral system. 5. Revise/develop written breastfeeding information sheets for prenatal and discharge packets. 6. Provides consultation to breastfeeding mothers in other departments, including the ED, outpatient areas, and pediatrics, as needed if either the postpartum mother or infant/child is admitted. 7. Provides educational programs and materials and consultation for nursing, OB and Pediatric/Family Practice medical staff and office staff members on a regular basis to ensure updated provider knowledge, comfort, and competency. 8. Participates in regular community education on breastfeeding to promote community awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding. 9. Maintains, monitors and reports pertinent breastfeeding statistics and trends. 10. Participates in and supports performance improvement and risk management activities. Identifies and leads quality improvement activities. 11. Revises policies/protocols and documentation systems to reflect current research recommendations 12. Chairs organizational Breastfeeding Committee. 13. Establish/maintain related breastfeeding support services such as a pump rental depot. 14. Accurately documents, codes and processes charges for lactation services provided. 15. Meets performance expectations for Customer Service, Teamwork, Resource Utilization, and Staff and Self Development as outlined in performance review. 16. Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure smooth operation of the department/unit.
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. BSN required; MSN preferred. Current Lactation Consultant certification required.
2 ? 3 years of lactation counseling required. 3 ? 5 years experience in obstetrics/postpartum/childbirth education or other clinically related field preferred.
Valid state of Connecticut Registered Nurse license
Bilingual ability a plus
Hospital orientation and leadership training provided
May give direction to nursing staff members and volunteers working on units with breast feeding women
