This position reports to the Director Specialty and Retail Pharmacy Services, Yale-New Haven Health System to provide overall strategic direction and leadership to Specialty Pharmacy and be responsible for assigned operational units. Responsible for management of operations including cost-effective service delivery, consistently meeting customer expectations related to service, clinical effectiveness and patient safety; development and implementation of quality measurement and improvement programs, human resources management, regulatory compliance, program implementation, purchase of capital equipment and supplies and effective financial management related to productivity and budgeting. Serve as the operations resource and participate in strategic discussions surrounding potential clients, payer strategies and contracting strategies.
Responsibilities: 1. Evaluate, develop and implement options to provide optimal delivery of specialty pharmacy related services . Evaluate, assess and weigh the pros and cons of planning options, operational situations and management approaches; be a strong decision-maker who measures and seeks objective answers. Gather information by participating, sampling the opinions of those closest to the operations to assure that plans, decisions and management are very connected to the business. Plan with clear goals and expectations that contribute to both efficiency and effectiveness in results as guiding standards. 2. Provide overall leadership and ensure accountability for responsible areas including but not limited to: human resources management including recruitment, retention, performance management, employee engagement and development of staff; Design and implement services and delivery processes that are responsive to customer needs and support exceptional customer service, clinical effectiveness, optimal financial performance and patient safety ; Provide ongoing, continuous management oversight, as a coach who is concerned with the growth and development of employees, and as one who can assure that management employees are held accountable for operating results which are clinically and financially solid and measurable; Responsible for setting operational and safety goals. 3. Participates in the department's educational affiliations with external academic institutions. Identifies targets for and participates in in-service education for medical, nursing, pharmacy and support staff aimed at supporting optimal outpatient medication use for patients. 4. Fosters open inter- and intradepartmental communication between staff and managers. Participates in departmental, organizational and health system committees related to specialty pharmacy services 5. Along with the Executive Director, Pharmacy Services provides a strategic plan for Specialty Pharmacy Services Growth for all affiliates and members of the Health System and the patients they serve. 6. Administers human resources policies and procedures in accordance with hospital and departmental policy. 7. Communicates the status of projects, operations, staff concerns, and problems to the Executive Director on a weekly basis or more frequently as needed. 8. Complies with all aspects of the hospital's patient/customer relations program. Demonstrates professionalism in all activities, as measure by a concern for patient care, the ability to listen/cooperate, showing flexibility under stress, the ability to help others, and the ability to set and achieve goals. 9. Manage drug expense to budget by monitoring drug expense, revenue and billing practices. Identifying opportunities for improvement, and initiating cost avoidance programs to achieve planned savings and/or cost avoidance. Strategically plan future budgets through drug forecast, volume, and inflationary projections. 10. Establish a succession process/plan for development of leadership positions and increased staff engagement that improves communications, builds teamwork, and optimizes job functions to maximize efficiency. 11. Accountable for operational efficiency and optimal productivity for all specialty and retail operational units as developed/assigned. Responsible for regulatory compliance on a federal and state level related to pharmacy practice and operations. Organize the structure that is needed to optimize operational performance during fast growth and develop and implement the operational policies, systems and procedures that can assure consistency and predictability across similar operating units. 12. Accountable for working with the Senior Leadership team to adapt, modify and change systems and procedures as they are found to be inadequate or ineffective; take the opportunity to be a change agent when operating situations or deficiencies demand it.

Graduate of an accredited College of Pharmacy. Advanced degree (M.S. or Pharm.D.) and completion of an ASHP Accredited Pharmacy Practice Residency Program is required. Completion of a PGY-2 in administration or clinical area preferred. Business degree in addition to PharmD highly preferred (e.g. MS, MBA, MPH).
Minimum of six years management experience in specialty, infusion, or retail pharmacy operations. Management of a multi-site operations preferred. Business development experience with start-up business preferred. Two to five years management experience in applicable settings.
in a hospital pharmacy setting with strong working knowledge of formulary management, clinical pharmacy program development, pharmacy metrics, compliance and regulatory issues relative to hospital pharmacy practice, , physician engagement, and project management. Candidates with experience managing many diverse projects and programs related to clinical pharmacy that have demonstrated positive results on budget mitigation and patient outcomes are required. Clear demonstration of professional personnel performance management is also required.
CT Pharmacist Licensure required, active and without restrictions

Project management, problem solving skills are required and must be demonstrated through past experience. Knowledge of automation technologies in retail pertinent to medication use is strongly preferred. Six Sigma or other validated quality improvement certification is preferred. Has expertise in patient management.
The individual in the position is held accountable to the Director Specialty and Retail Pharmacy Services, Yale-New Haven Health System. Essential to maintain the highest professional standards and the provision of specialty pharmacy services that promote cost-effective medication therapy and positively impact patient outcomes. . This individual is held accountable to staffing standards as documented in the Attendance and Punctuality system and the HR data on performance review completion. The individual is accountable to managing pharmaceutical expense to budget, analyzing variances and implementing action plans and other cost-avoidance strategies.
This position requires leadership qualities and the ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing. This individual requires a high degree of planning and discretion in making operational and technical decisions. In addition, this position requires an individual who is able to apply new ideas, knowledge and skill gained from experience and education to current situations; and should possess a superior knowledge of standards of pharmacy practice. Must be able to influence others outside of his/her direct reports. Must have excellent team building skills, and ability to achieve goals/performance expectations through management as well as motivation of others.
