Summary:
The Canine Handler Will Utilize A Trained Dog To Detect Narcotics, Bombs And Firearms. The Handler And The Dog Shall Work As A Team And Will Be Used To Support Public Safety In Searches. The Canine Handler Must Stay Informed On All New Canine Deployment And Training Techniques. The Handler Must Maintain Knowledge Of The Canine Program Policy And Any Legislation Or Laws Affecting The Canine Concept. The Canine Handler Must Be Willing To Have The Canine Live With His Family And Have Suitable Living Space For It.

Responsibilities:
  • 1. Search For Discarded Or Concealed Narcotics, Bombs And Firearms.
  • 2. Search Buildings, Vehicles And Open Areas For Suspected Narcotics, Bombs And Firearms.
  • 3. Assists Other Law Enforcement Or Government Agencies When Requested. In The Event That The Canine Should Be Requested By Another Agency The Director Of Public Safety Will Be Contacted.
  • 4. Assess As To Whether Or Not The Canine Is Capable Of Performing The Task Requested, Either On L+M Property Or When Assisting Other Law Enforcement Or Government Agencies.
  • 5. Train And Test The Dog As A Team In Accordance With The Canine Program Policy.
  • 6. Provide At-Home Care For The Dog In Accordance With The Canine Program Policy.
  • 7. Ensure The Veterinary Needs Of The Assigned Canine Are Met And Kept Up To Date At All Times And That All Decisions Regarding Care For The Dog Are Made In Accordance With The Canine Program Policy.
  • 8. Promote The Canine Program And Participate In Community Relations.
  • 9. Stay Knowledgeable Of, And Follow, All Sections Of The Canine Program Policy.
  • 10. Meets Performance Expectations For Customer Service, Teamwork, Resource Utilization, And Staff And Self Development As Outlined In Performance Review.
  • 11. Performs Other Duties As Assigned Or Directed To Ensure Smooth Operation Of The Department/Unit.

    EXPERIENCE:

    The Officer/Supervisor Must Have A Minimum Of Three Consecutive Years Of Service In Public Safety Without Disciplinary Action.
