Under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager, Shift Coordinators, and Section Coordinators, performs a wide range of clinical laboratory testing in an accurate and timely fashion by utilizing technical and problem -solving skills in conjunction with a thorough knowledge of Clinical Chemistry principles and instrumentation. Cooperatively and proactively assists in other areas as needed in a teamwork oriented environment. Maintains effective communications and harmoniously transfers testing and pending follow ups between employees and shifts following all CHAMP and HRO standards. Maintains procedure knowledge and implements all new and revised procedures in real time. Maintains all Quality Control and Quality Assurance standards at all times. Participates in proficiency testing as assigned following all routine standards and workflow. Maintains operational effectiveness and assumes full responsibility for continuing education requirements, licensure, and expertise to adapt as needed to an expanding department with increased testing complexity.
1. Technical Skills - Demonstrates technical competency by performing a wide variety of techniques involved in the chemistry laboratory. These include moderate to highly complex tests. 1.1. Performs tests according to laboratory procedures with acceptable accuracy and precision. 1.2. Understands basic principles of chemistry procedures including such concepts as analytical theory, quality control evaluation, reference ranges, critical values, clinical significance of the assay, instrumentation used, reagent stability, calibration, etc. 1.3. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of specimen aliquoting skills, including specimen assessment, specimen volume requirements, sample storage requirements, anticoagulant assessment, specimen processing requirements. 1.4. Collects Quality Assurance and Error Management data and discusses pertinent issues with Coordinators and the Lab Manager. 1.5. Learns new procedures readily according to training schedule. Takes initiative to maintain skills on infrequently performed tests. 1.6. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of Quality Control data assessment; applies such knowledge to assessment of daily QC runs; documents QC and corrective actions in appropriate QC logs; alerts Coordinators when QC issues arise; discusses QC issues with Coordinators in order to increase knowledge base. 1.7. Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the Reference ranges and Critical abnormal ranges; reports values according to laboratory procedures; documents the reporting of Critical abnormal values and read-back. 2. Instrumentation Skills - Demonstrates sufficient knowledge and skills to independently operate all 24/7 instrumentation/areas. 2.1. Performs instrument maintenance according to schedule including documentation, within established time limits. 2.2. Demonstrates ability to perform basic instrument operation including routine and STAT modes (if any), menu options, and response to error flags. 2.3. Handles STAT, Pediatric, and routine samples so as to minimize turn-around-time and maximize reporting of clinically useful information. 2.4. Follows established quality control procedures, including frequency of quality control monitoring; evaluation of acceptability of results; documentation of response to outliers. Anticipates quality control problems in advance by monitoring shifts and trends. 2.5. Recognizes instrument problems when they occur by responding to instrument alarms, error flags, and quality control problems. Initiates trouble-shooting procedures in a systematic manner. 2.6. Reports values according to laboratory procedures, including timely reporting of critical values to appropriate person(s). Documents critical values and their reporting. 2.7. Independently evaluates results for acceptability based on proper instrument operation, plausibility of results, previous patient data; alerts supervisor if discrepancies. 3. General Laboratory Skills and Knowledge - Performs tasks that assist with overall operation of laboratory service according to laboratory policies and in compliance with regulatory guidelines. 3.1. Takes responsibility for all reagents and supplies associated with assigned test to ensure adequate materials are available for next analysis. 3.2. Participates in CAP testing as established by laboratory and regulatory procedures. 3.3. Accounts for all pending samples from beginning of shift to established "cutoff" time for assigned area. 3.4. Demonstrates organizational skills to prioritize work according to urgency and medical need. Performs multiple tasks to optimize efficiency. 3.5. Follows safely procedures and uses appropriate safety materials and personal protective equipment. 3.6. Demonstrates responsibility for work extending past scheduled shift by staying to complete tasks 90% of the time. 3.7. Demonstrates knowledge of general laboratory policies and procedures for quality control monitoring of equipment including temperature checks, pipet calibration, general equipment maintenance and documentation. 3.8. Demonstrates knowledge of use of laboratory computer programs and functions. 3.9. Reports problems and situations inconsistent with good patient care to appropriate person(s). 3.10. Recognizes and performs duties which need to be performed to enhance the overall laboratory environment. 3.11. Provides all required documentation according to laboratory policies including error reports, log books, and problem logs. 3.12. Consistently follows laboratory procedures for reagent labeling. 4. Professional Skills - Participates in activities that demonstrate professionalism, a commitment to competency and career growth. 4.1. Assumes leadership role for students, trainees, and co-workers by providing technical assistance when asked. 4.2. Participates in inter-laboratory continuing education program. 4.3. Demonstrates positive approach to learning new concepts, responsibilities, techniques, and/or procedures. 4.4. Adheres to hospital policy by returning from breaks/lunch within established times. 4.5. Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology or equivalent with MLS / MT (ASCP) certification or equivalent or eligibility.
One (1) to two (2) years' experience in an accredited Clinical Laboratory preferred.
MLS / MT (ASCP) certification or equivalent or eligibility.
Working knowledge of instrumentation and equipment used in a Clinical Chemistry laboratory. Efficiency in word processing applications, spreadsheet design / utilization, and use of web based resources. Basic knowledge of laboratory information systems. Must possess excellent communication skills and ability to communicate in an effective and professional manner with hospital staff. Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills are required. The ability to work as a member of a team is essential.
Performs a variety of routine tests and procedures, performs instrument maintenance procedures, performs routine quality control procedures.
Prepares reports of testing in a timely fashion; reports findings to the appropriate personnel; performs all duties in accordance with established Clinical laboratory standards. Individuals within this role having 6 years' experience with (Bachelor's Degree), 4 years' experience with (Master's Degree), 2 years' experience with (PhD), may be requested to provide New York State General Supervisor coverage.
