Summary:
This Specialty Resource Surgical Technologist is a certified technician who, as a result of advanced education and in-depth clinical experience in able to demonstrate proficiency in a defined area of practice specific to embryology/IVF. This individual is highly motivated and self-directed and requires minimal supervision in accomplishing his/her duties and responsibilities. He/she actively contributes to the knowledge and growth of self and others and is able to assume more responsibilities outside of his/her area of expertise. Essentials duties include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Responsibilities:
  • 1. Accountable for the delivery of quality patient care in the Operating Room.
  • 1.1. Assists with the transportation of patients to and from the O.R.
  • 1.2. Addresses patient by name and identifies self and department.
  • 1.3. Maintains patient's comfort in the holding room by offering a warm blanket, etc.
  • 1.4. Confirms patient's identity and completed correct consent for surgery with the R.N.
  • 1.5. Demonstrates active communication and participation with designated O.R. team members in the TIME OUT verification.
  • 1.6. Maintains patient safety by applying principles of good body alignment and safety techniques (safety strap and side rails), and adapting them to varying situations during transportation of the patient.
  • 1.7. Demonstrates advanced skills in the use of all equipment to support primary service
  • 1.8. Provides advanced surgical scrub services in primary service
  • 1.9. Anticipates emergency or unusual circumstances and initiates corrective actions according to established protocols.
  • 1.10. Anticipates the need of the surgeon in order to expedite the procedure.
  • 2. Assists with the preparation of equipment and supplies required for the surgical procedure.
  • 2.1. Plans for and coordinates supplies and equipment for intra operative use.
  • 2.2. Demonstrates proficiency when selecting instruments for all types of embryology/IVF procedures.
  • 2.3. Understands the mechanism of the O.R. autoclaves, and uses proper timing and controls according to procedure.
  • 2.4. Checks case carts for required supplies and selects necessary items as needed for assigned surgery.
  • 2.5. Demonstrates knowledge of the storage of specialty equipment by the ability to locate such when necessary.
  • 2.6. Participates in circulating duties with the R.N. during set up.
  • 2.7. Collaborates with other departments (i.e., blood bank, radiology) torequest items needed for the procedure.
  • 2.8. Reviews preference/pick list and identifies changes to specialtyteam coordinator/section heads for approval and update.
  • 2.9. Inspects and tests instruments and equipments; ensures that specialty and general instruments are functioning and reports any abnormalitiesto specialty team coordinators/section heads; takes immediate action if required by the situation.
  • 2.10. Demonstrates care, handling, and assembly of accessory and specialty equipment; sets up air power equipment; sets up appropriate microscope for procedures (balance, change lens).
  • 2.11. Identifies and sets up major types of catheter, drains, tubes, andcollecting mechanisms and their preparation and use in specific procedure.
  • 2.12. Identifies and sets up sterile packs and trays and selects appropriate supplies and equipment for surgical procedure; selects appropriate draping materials for specific procedure.
  • 2.13. Sets up and maintains solutions and temperature of warming blanket unit
  • 2.14. Under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse or anesthesia personnel.
  • 2.15. Applies electrosurgical ground pad under the direction of a registered nurse as well as connects active electrode to electrosurgical unit.
  • 2.16. Anticipates the need for additional supplies during the embryology/IVF procedure.
  • 2.17. Operates all equipment as needed. Follows all recommended practicesand procedures.
  • 2.18. Identifies developing emergency situations, initiates appropriate action, and assists in the treatment of the patient.
  • 3. Participates as a team member in the implementation of the patients' plan of care.
  • 3.1. Demonstrates proficiency with procedures and equipment appropriate to the O.R. as demonstrated by the skills check list.
  • 3.2. Demonstrates proficiency with the use of specialized equipment.
  • 3.3. Demonstrates an understanding of the embryology/IVF procedure with knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and instrumentation.
  • 3.4. Prepares instrument tables and equipment required for perioperative and intraoperative according to procedure.
  • 3.5. Demonstrates competency in applying the principles of sterile technique according to procedure, and in varying situations; initiates corrective action when breaks in technique occur. (This includes the organization of opening sterile supplies and neatness of sterile field.)
  • 3.6. Demonstrates knowledge in positioning the patient to provide safety and physical support in collaboration with the R.N.
  • 3.7. Demonstrates knowledge of hair removal and surgical preps with pre-scribed antimicrobial solutions and procedures.
  • 3.8. Demonstrates knowledge of applying sterile drapes to the patient according to procedure, and initiates corrective action when breaks in technique occur.
  • 3.9. Demonstrates competency to perform sponge, sharps and instrumentcounts and initiates corrective action when counts are inaccurate (including documentation).
  • 3.10. Demonstrates competency according to procedure while functioning as the scrub assistant.
  • 3.11. Demonstrates competency according to procedure while functioning as an assistant.
  • 3.12. Demonstrates knowledge of proper handling of specimens.
  • 3.13. Demonstrates knowledge of the application of dressings with assistance.
  • 3.14. Assists with the case breakdown by adhering to O.R. sanitation policies and procedures. Follows Universal Precautions.
  • 3.15. Demonstrates knowledge of prescribed procedures for terminally cleaning all items that have come in contact with the patient and/or sterile field.
  • 3.16. Demonstrates awareness of special care procedures for specialty items and equipment by following proper procedure.
  • 3.17. Responds to medical and surgical emergencies during surgery according to departmental procedure with assistance of the R.N.
  • 3.18. Demonstrates knowledge of the use of emergency equipment, and is familiar with emergency procedures used for cardiac arrest with the assistance of the R.N.
  • 3.19. Maintains and enforces highest standard of sterile technique and safe environment during operative procedure especially during laser cases. Applies dressing material, connects drains and irrigates the operativesite and suctions as directed.
  • 3.20. Provides surgical scrub services for all areas in his/her primary cluster and maintains core competencies outside of cluster.
  • 3.21. Initiates corrective action according to the established guidelines when counts are incorrect.
  • 3.22. Demonstrates organization of work during surgical procedure in any given case.
  • 3.23. Demonstrates advanced skill as a resource person in primary service,collaboratively interacting with all Specialty Team Coordinator/Section Heads.
  • 3.24. Actively participates in team planning and independently executes established plan of care for the operative patient effectively.
  • 4. Demonstrates responsibility to the department and a commitment to personal career growth.
  • 4.1. Attends 80% of required unit staff meetings; reads and initials all meeting minutes.
  • 4.2. Reviews and initials all memos.
  • 4.3. Attends all mandatory hospital/unit based inservices within the year.
  • 4.4. Attends 6-8 hours per year of inservices in clinical area of practice.
  • 4.5. Presents one (1) workshop per year relevant to the unit.
  • 4.6. Identifies own limitations in skills or knowledge as demonstrated by requesting guidance from appropriate colleagues.
  • 4.7. Actively participates in own performance appraisal by identifying own individual goals , new annual initiative and reviewing progress with clinical leaders and nurse manager.
  • 4.8. Participates in unit projects (initiative) that contributes to the efficiency of the department.
  • 4.9. Participates in the orientation of personnel as assigned by the Director of Greenwich Fertility.
  • 4.10. Selects and prepares supplies and equipment for the operative team and applies appropriate equipment to the patient as requested by the MD.
  • 4.11. Operates selected equipment as needed following all recommended practices and procedures.
  • 4.12. Monitors and controls the surgical environment as indicated in policy and procedures.
  • 4.13. Performs urinary catheterization and monitoring of urinary output.
  • 4.14. Demonstrates the proper principles of positioning of the surgical patient in preparation for surgical procedures.
  • 4.15. Documents the intra operative care of the patient
  • 5. Contributes to the productivity and efficient operation of the department.
  • 5.1. Uses time efficiently in regard to overtime and completes assignments with minimal errors and within the shift, as observed by the Director and IVF Coordinator.
  • 5.2. Requests additional assignment when own work is completed.
  • 5.3. Maintains appropriate time frames for lunch and breaks according to hospital policy.
  • 5.4. Assures an adequate supply of stock items for the following shift.
  • 5.5. Uses supplies judiciously and in a cost effective manner.
  • 6. Responsible for promoting the Greenwich Hospital Quality Service Excellence Standards.
  • 6.1. Maintains patient's privacy and confidentiality at all times according to hospital standards.
  • 6.2. Acts as a patient advocate and assures that the patient's Bill of Rights is followed.
  • 6.3. Shows consideration toward patient and family acknowledging them promptly and speaking in a manner which shows concern.
  • 6.4. Shows consideration toward hospital personnel by responding in a professional manner that shows understanding.
  • 6.5. Contributes to the positive attitude of the unit on a consistent basis by promoting team work.
  • 6.6. Answers telephone in a courteous manner identifying self and department.
  • 6.7. Provides information in a clear, concise and calm manner and is prepared to answer requests or questions by patient or family or make appropriate referral.
  • 6.8. Assesses environment for safety hazards which could harm patients, visitors or other hospital employees, and reports hazards to appropriate personnel.
  • 6.9. Wears identification when out of O.R. suite.
  • 7. The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit's/area's/department's policies and procedures.

    Other information:

    EDUCATION:

    High school; graduate from certified technician program preferred, and related Operating Room experience with advanced education. National Certification as a Surgical Technologist preferred.

    EXPERIENCE:

    Must meet the criteria for Surgical Technician, has a minimum of 2 years current experience in an operating room and consistently demonstrates competent practice in assigned service. Maintains his/her certification and AST membership. Participates in continuing education program attending at least 20 contact hours per year, 75% of which pertains directly to surgical technology. Provides inservice education for other members of the surgical team in current procedures, techniques and equipment.

    SPECIAL_SKILLS:

    Ability to perform scrub assistant responsibilities at advanced level. Possess in-depth clinical experience and is able to demonstrate proficiency in defined area of practice. Participates and collaborates in unit-based committees; updates and enforces unit policies across all disciplines and reports/documents deviations from standards to specialty team coordinator. Supports and fosters unit philosophy and actively participates in team building. Precepts new staff and collaborates with other members of the surgical team on meeting the education needs of this group, and monitors their progress. Exceeds expectations when performing all the job related responsibilities described in Surgical Technician.

    PHYSICAL_DEMAND:

    May be exposed to infectious diseases, hazardous waste and radiation. Standing/walking most of the day and occasionally working in awkward positions. Helps lift heavy objects ten (10) to twenty (20) pounds and also assists in moving of patients ranging from one hundred (100) to four hundred (400) pounds. Moderate stress related to patient care.
