Responsibilities:
  • 1. Professional and Technical Competence
  • 1.1. Communicates well with pharmacy staff on pharmacy issues, and responds appropriately to problem situations.
  • 1.2. Encourages cost effective practices (purchasing, utilization etc.) and assures that work is completed in designated time. Avoids un-authorized overtime.
  • 1.3. Has low rate of errors when making IV solutions and refilling Pyxis.
  • 1.4. Participates in pre-packing activity using MILT system as required.
  • 2. Maintains Appropriate Inventory Levels
  • 2.1. Orders medications and other supplies from vendors as needed.
  • 2.2. Checks all assigned areas for outdated drugs, replacing stock following removal.
  • 2.3. Orders medications according to max-min system, notifying Director or Procurement Technician if adjustments needed to par levels.
  • 2.4. Proactively monitors usage and inventory levels to avoid stock outs in times of increased use.
  • 3. Controlled Substance Inventory and Record Keeping
  • 3.1. Verifies daily controlled substance count in Pyxis during refill/restocking activities.
  • 3.2. Empties assigned return bins, and any others that need to be done due to absence on a daily basis.
  • 3.3. Dispenses narcotics according to hospital policy, and completes and files Pyxis paperwork appropriately.
  • 3.4. Assists with completing monthly narcotic count if requested by Director.
  • 4. Supports Existing Hospital Information Systems.
  • 4.1. Enters and verifies patient charges and credits daily using hospital information system.
  • 4.2. Acts as resource for nursing, pharmacy and other staff for Pyxis related issues.
  • 4.3. Under supervision of a pharmacist, refills medications into the Pyxis medstations.
  • 4.4. Willingly orients new pharmacy and nursing staff to existing systems and new initiatives.
  • 5. Proficiency in IV Compounding
  • 5.1. Complies 100% of time with required clean room attire and cleaning procedures.
  • 5.2. Uses appropriate sterile technique when mixing IV solutions and chemotherapy, and observes all required occupational health precautions. Is aware of procedures relating to chemotherapy spills or blood borne pathogen exposure.
  • 5.3. Recognizes abnormal solutions, doses, or combinations and notifies pharmacist.
  • 5.4. Maintains all required documentations logs for IV room, including environmental monitoring, TPN calculation sheet, narcotic waste etc.
  • 6. Maintains a professional working relationship with employees in other departments.
  • 6.1. Keeps staff members informed of patient/clinical issues.
  • 6.2. Identifies and implements measures to assure staff and patient safety.
  • 6.3. Maintains a working knowledge of department and hospital policies and procedures.
  • 6.4. Projects a positive image for the pharmacy department at all times.
  • 7. Educational and Safety Compliance
  • 7.1. Attends all required safety and educational programs.
  • 7.2. Completes all assigned competencies and continuing education requirements.
  • 7.3. Has working knowledge of all hospital and departmental policies. Can quickly find the answer to questions asked by accreditation surveyors.
  • 7.4. Is able to locate all required safety literature, including MSDS sheets.


    Other information:

    EDUCATION:

    High school diploma or equivalent.


    EXPERIENCE:

    One year of experience as a pharmacy technician. Experience in a hospital setting preferred.


    LICENSURE:

    Licensed as a Pharmacy Technician by the Rhode Island Board of Pharmacy. Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT)


    SPECIAL_SKILLS:

    ACCOUNTABILITY:

    Membership in a pharmacy professional organization preferred. Evidence of continued professional growth.
