Performs physical therapy treatments and related tasks delegated and supervised by a licensed physical therapist in accordance with hospital policy and APTA standards of practice.
Responsibilities: 1. Under the supervision of a physical therapist, demonstrates competence in all physical therapy modalities and procedures in accordance with policies as outlined in departmental manuals.
1.1. Demonstrates competence in use of equipment in department.
1.2. Applies modalities in proper manner and properly adjusts and sets equipment prior to use by patient.
1.3. Demonstrates awareness of precautions and contraindications for modalities.
1.4. Monitors patient tolerance/ response and appropriately adjusts modalities as needed. Modifies interventions within the scope of the plan of care.
2. Coordinates patient's treatment plan with evaluating physical therapist ensuring optimal patient care and communication.
2.1. Accurately and appropriately follows established treatment plan.
2.2. Monitors established goals and documents achievement of outcomes.
2.3. Reports changes in patient status and updates on progression of plan of care to the supervising physical therapist, uses physical therapist input and guidance to alter treatment plan.
2.4. Informs therapist of observation/ supervisory visit/ re-evaluation needs.
3. Knows how to coordinate work. Works in an organized and efficient manner.
3.1. Displays ability to treat more than one patient at a time in department as modalities and treatments allow.
3.2. Responds to changes in the work schedule, demonstrates flexibility in view of interruption.
3.3. Informs supervisor or director of changes in work schedule, coverage needs, and patient issues.
3.4. Keeps schedule current and neat.
4. Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a team inter- and intradepartmentally to facilitate the department's ability to meet its goals and objectives.
4.1. Demonstrates willingness and ability to help others as requested.
4.2. Demonstrates initiative to help others and maintain productivity.
4.3. Receptive to constructive input and follows through on recommendations.
4.4. Makes suggestions/ recommendations for changes within the department and solutions to problems.
5. Maintains and enhances personal knowledge as well as promoting professional standards in physical therapy. Attends all required safety training programs.
5.1. Seeks opportunities to advance skills and knowledge from other staff, professional organizations, and attending continuing education programs.
5.2. Shares expertise/information/techniques with staff and colleagues at meeting and inservices.
5.3. Provides a safe environment for patients and self.
5.4. Practices aseptic techniques, adheres to infection control policies.
6. Documentation of progress notes is professional, concise, accurate and timely.
6.1. Is responsible to write legible, concise, relevant, and inclusive documentation that communicates care provided, patient status, ongoing needs, and achievement of goals.
6.2. Long and short term goals are addressed within time frames.
6.3. Assists physical therapist with physician progress notes and certification forms as requested.
6.4. Correspondence requests are completed in a timely manner.
7. Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.
7.1. Interacts with all of the above in a considerate, helpful, and courteous manner, as observed by the supervisor/ director and peers.
7.2. Maintains mature and professional manner with fellow employees, exhibiting composure and confidence even during stressful situations.
7.3. Maintains open communication using the appropriate chain of command regarding issues.
7.4. Displays a positive attitude within the department and across departmental lines to contribute to the overall customer service program.
8. Assumes care for physical and psychological/ social needs of the patients. Explains procedures to facilitate cooperation and alleviate anxiety.
8.1. Encourages patients to be motivated and an active participant in their rehab program.
8.2. Provides patient/ family teaching when appropriate regarding patient's treatment plan, home program, and discharge needs.
8.3. Explains new activities/ procedures in clear and accurate manner, appropriate to the patient's level of understanding and learning needs.
8.4. Recognizes changes in status and takes appropriate action.
Graduate of an accredited school of physical therapy with Associate Degree.
At least 3 months probationary period commencing with date of hire.
Rhode Island PTA license or eligible. CPR certification
Ability to communicate effectively and professionally in verbal and written form. Basic computer knowledge required. Pleasant and friendly interactions.
