Responsible for the evaluation and treatment of patients in the assigned patient care areas. Performs other clinical and teaching duties as may be required.
Responsibilities: 1. Clinical 1.1. Performs basic TR evaluations on assigned patients. 1.2. All patient care responsibilities will be performed consistent with age-specific criteria (see attached). 1.3. Demonstrates technical skill and accuracy in performing individual and group treatments. 1.4. Develops age and diagnosis specific treatment programs which reflect compliance with established clinical protocols/practice, monitoring patients' responses and recommending appropriate discharge follow-up. 1.5. Sets measurable and appropriate goals which reflect patient participation and family involvement as appropriate. 1.6. Provides patient and family education. 1.7. Initiates and maintains current records and reports concerning patient course, re-evaluates and updates goals and plans as necessary, based on patient's response to treatment. 1.8. Uses equipment in a safe and effective manner. 1.9. Reports malfunctioning or missing equipment to supervisor and takes corrective action to remove equipment from use. 1.10. Assumes responsibility for order of working areas. 1.11. Maintains a high standard of professional accountability with respect to safety, efficiency, effectiveness, ethics and legal issue. 1.12. Demonstrates compliance with all Hospital and Department policies and procedures regarding clinical practice. 1.13. Participates constructively in team conferences, rounds, and discharge planning as appropriate. 2. Education 2.1. Attends mandatory department inservices. 2.2. Assists with orientation of staff as appropriate. 2.3. Assists in orientation, education and guidance of support staff as appropriate. 2.4. Provides education to Hospital staff as required. 3. Self Development 3.1. Seeks opportunities to expand own knowledge of profession and related fields. 3.2. Maintains CTRS status via meeting established national standards. 4. Administration 4.1. Complies with Hospital and Department Policies and Procedures. 4.2. Participates in departmental QA/QI activities. 4.3. Plans and organizes daily schedule to optimally use time. 4.4. Appropriately addresses patient coverage issues for scheduled time off. 4.5. Carries patient load that reflects productivity standard of units. 4.6. Maintains documentation in accordance with hospital policy, regulatory requirements (HCFA, JCAHO, etc.) and professional standards. 4.7. Participates in regular meetings with supervisor and reports pertinent information on a timely basis. 5. Clinical Supervision 5.1. Appropriately delegates responsibilities to support staff and volunteers maintaining appropriate level of clinical supervision. 5.2. Provides clinical supervision to students/volunteers as appropriate. 6. Human Relations Skills 6.1. Demonstrates respect and regard for dignity of all patients, families, visitors and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsive, and courteous hospital environment. 6.2. Participates in community activities as required.
Minimum of a B.S. from an accredited Therapeutic Recreation Program or related field as outlined by the National Therapeutic Recreation Standards. Must be or currently pursuing CTRS certification from National Council Therapeutic Recreation certification. Certification is required within 1 year of employment.
At least two (2) to five (5) years in a psychiatric setting and/or child development strongly preferred.
The individual should demonstrate knowledge in therapeutic recreation theory, evaluation, and treatment techniques for various special population groups. Observation skills, communication skills (both verbal and written), and an ability to work with others in a synergistic manner are essential. The individual should also be willing and able to assume increased responsibilities as required.
Accountable for providing quality patient care and adherence with professional code of ethics and applicable state and federal regulations. Actively supports the mission, goals, strategies and policies of Yale-New Haven Hospital and the Child Psychiatric Inpatient/Partial Hospital Services. Must perform all position responsibilities at a Meets Expectations level and maintain national certification through NCTRS established criteria. Legally accountable for all tasks delegated to support staff, volunteers, and students.
The individual must be able to implement TR evaluations and treatments in collaboration with other health team members in a safe and effective manner. They must be able to monitor changes in the patients' condition and take appropriate action. Provides cogent summary of patients' status verbally and in writing. Provides educational experience to other staff.
