Perform Diagnostic pulmonary testing as ordered by a physician. Essential duties and responsibilities include the following: performing pulmonary function testing on children (age 3 and above) and adults inlcuding spirometry, static lung volumes, and diffusion capacity, plethysmography, (TGV and RAW), IOS, arterial puncture for blood gases, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, exercise challenge studies, administration bronchodilators and other medications, maximum respiratory pressures, methacholine challenge, pulse oximetry, six minute walk, metabolic/calorimetry studies, basic life support and bronchoscopy assist. Educate medical staff, new employees, students, patients, and visitors within the context of the job responsibilities listed above. Additional responsibilities include effective communication with all patient care team members, patient scheduling, maintaining accurate records, disinfection and sterilization of equipment, and clerical tasks. Other duties may be assigned as appropriate.
Responsibilities: 1. Perform Pulmonary function testing. 1.1. Review and schedule patients for testing following established procedures as observed by supervisor. 1.2. Prepare and perform test following established departmental procedures for quality control 95% of the time as observed by supervisor. 1.3. Troubleshoot equipment malfunction and remedy when possible. 1.4. Report any unresolved malfunction of equipment to the Lead Technologist immediately. 1.5. Documents all calibrations, quality control, maintenance, and or malfunctions 95% of the time. 1.6. Follows all policy and procedure in the maintenance and disinfection of all PFT equipment and supplies. 1.7. Maintains efficient use of equipment and supplies with respect to cost containment. 2. Establish and maintain the level of skills necessary to provide all services provided by the Pulmonary lab. 2.1. Keep abreast of new technologies, equipment, and procedures within the field reviewing journals and otherpublications as observed by supervisor. 2.2. Attend mandatory inservices 100% of the time as noted in review of attendance logs. 2.3. Review any new procedure initiated for the lab immediately when instituted 100% of the time as observed bysupervisor. 2.4. Demonstrates and maintains current knowledge and skill in providing appropriate care for geriatric patients as observed by supervisor and as indicated by feedback from staff. 2.5. Demonstrates and maintains current knowledge and skill in providing appropriate care for adult patients as observed by supervisor and as indicted by feedback from staff. 2.6. Demonstrates and maintains current knowledge and skill in providing appropriate care for young adult patients as observed by supervisor and as indicated by feedback from staf 2.7. Demonstrates and maintains current knowledge and skill in providing appropriate care for pediatric patients as observed by supervisor and as indicated by feedback from staff. 2.8. Maintains competency and skill with equipment and/or procedures infrequently performed. 3. Consult with physicians, nurses, and other professionals regarding diagnostic testing. 3.1. Establish and maintain effective communications concerning patients' test results according to departmentprocedures as indicated by feedback from physicians, nurses, and other staff members. 3.2. Maintain accurate records, logs and documentation of test results and data with 95% accuracy as noted insupervisory review of patient records and logs. 4. Assume leadership of the lab in the absence of the Senior Technologist. 4.1. During absence of Sr. Technologist plan and assign shift workload according to schedule and skills of staff according to department staffing procedures as observed by department manager. 4.2. Resolve issues effecting the day to day operation of the Pulmonary Lab. 4.3. Communicate/report all issues to department manager or Medical Director as appropriate 100% of the time as observed by Lead Technologist. 5. Assist in the orientation and instruction of students, new employees, and/or special programs. 5.1. Provide instruction consistent with department policy as observed by supervisor. 5.2. Obtains feedback on performance for special programs to assure instructional goals are being met. 5.3. Reports on progress as appropriate to the lead technologist and/or department manager. 6. Perform arterial blood gas punctures and assist with fiberoptic bronchoscopy as required. 6.1. Determine the operational status of the equipment and follow established policy and procedure and adjust as necessary as observed by supervisor. 6.2. Performs arterial punctures in safe effective manner using standard precautions as outlined in department policy and procedure. 6.3. Assist the physician performing Fiberoptic Bronchoscopy according to established department procedures 95% of the time as observed by supervisor. 6.4. Set up necessary instruments to perform Bronchoscopies then clean and sterilize instruments after the procedure in a safe effective manner as observed by supervisor. 6.5. Follows hospital policy and procedure in maintaining accurate patient documentation while observing patient confidentiality. 6.6. Monitors all patients in accordance with the hospital's conscious sedation policy 100% of the time. 7. Participates in Quality Management and Performance Improvement activities. 7.1. Collects data on all quality management measures. 7.2. Reviews and understands quarterly reports and the importance of meeting established benchmarks. 7.3. Contributes ideas and solutions for performance improvement and quality management. 8. Maintains all clinical competencies up to date and completes with at least minimal passing scores. 8.1. Completes all on line competencies as they become due. 8.2. Maintains individual education/inservice records to be current. 8.3. Presents department inservices as scheduled by the Lead Technologist.
High school diploma or equivalent. College level courses in science and mathematics.
Graduate of an approved school of Respiratory Therapy or Cardiopulmonary Technology for hires after 1-1-2010
1-3 years experience working in Pulmonary Function.
Presently holding RPFT or RRT credentials. Any incumbent hired on or after 01/01/2010 must maintain a Connecticut RCPT license.
Strong mathematical and science background, one year of college level courses in science and math is desirable. Excellent computer skills. Ability to troubleshoot equipment and work with testing and scheduling applications.
Accountable for the quality and accuracy of patient testing and maintaining a positive customer relationship. Maintain skills consistent with the most current technology and techniques. Use equipment and supplies in a efficient, safe, and cost effective manner.
Ability to be self directed in the absence of the lead technologist. Problem solving skills and the ability to come up with creative solutions. Strong patient assessment skills are essential.
MMR is required. Varivax (chicken pox vaccine) or evidence of prior chicken pox is required. Hepatitis B (or signed declination) is required for those with potential exposure to blood/body fluids.
Tdap and influenza vaccination are strongly encouraged.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. They are occasionally required to sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. They must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
