Reporting to the Director of Pharmacy, plans, organizes and manages overall day to day operations of Oncology or Hazardous Pharmacy services at Smilow Cancer Hospital Care Center sites in Waterford, CT and Westerly, RI In addition, The Manager of Oncology Pharmacy services will also be responsible for oversight of all L+M Healthcare cleanrooms/SCAs. The Manager of Oncology Pharmacy services is expected to staff as an Oncology Pharmacist primarily at Smilow Cancer Hospital Westerly and also Waterford Care Center sites as needed.
Responsibilities: 1. Understand and share in the YNHHS Vision, support our Mission, and live our Values. As a member of a High Reliability Organization (HRO), practice CHAMP behavior and strive to make patient safety a top priority. Under the direction of the Director of Pharmacy, the manager of oncology pharmacy services will direct and organize programs, activities and supportive personnel in pharmacy operations and sterile compounding. 3. Oversees clinical, operational and regulatory processes related to sterile compounding of hazardous medications within the department of pharmacy and ensures these processes ensure safe, cost- effective, and efficient medication management. In addition, identify and execute process improvements in operations, drug utilization, IV room and pharmacy technologies and other applicable performance improvement projects as defined by the Director of Pharmacy and hospital administration. This can include system initiatives and projects. 4. Maintains supervision and human resource responsibilities for all oncology pharmacists that report to oncology pharmacy services and operations at SCH Waterford and SCH Westerly. Completion and/or contribution with other site managers to pharmacy technician performance reviews. 5. Serves as the LMH cleanroom coordinator responsible for cleanroom operational oversight, competency, and training coordination. In addition, ensures staff accountability and workflow/policy compliance with USP 797 and 800-based regulations at Westerly Hospital, L+M Hospital, and Smilow Cancer Hospital Waterford Care Center cleanrooms. This includes oversight of pharmacy personnel engaged in sterile compounding. 6. Coordinates the identification, communication, and resolution of problems relating to daily operational activities. 7. Encourages and stimulates excellence among employees in work habits, area maintenance, mutual respect, customer service and other activities directly or indirectly related to patient care. 8. Assists in the development and maintenance of programs and policies for monitoring and enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of pharmacy services. Ensure site compliance with all applicable Smilow Drug Use Policies and Procedures. 9. Responsible for the ongoing development and motivation of staff by assuring the timely resolution of personnel issues, ongoing communication of performance expectations and the completion of performance reviews. Participation as required in disciplinary actions. 10. Communicates the status of projects, staff concerns, and problems to the L+M and Westerly Pharmacy Operations and Clinical Manager on a weekly basis. 11. Responsible for monitoring and reporting quality indicators, work volume statistics, and project statuses in oncology and hazardous drug preparation 12. Trains and assesses clean room competency of pharmacy personnel and has direct oversight of daily activities. 13. Assures proper assignment and scheduling of department employees with appropriate delegation of responsibilities. 14. Assists in reporting and oversight of narcotic distribution and reporting of diversion, delegation of responsibilities to assure proper handling of controlled drug products throughout the Smilow sites. 15. Performs regular audits and rounds in areas where medications are stored, prepared or administered to identify practices that deviate from existing policies or standards. Ensures completion of the Pharmacist Monthly Patient Care Area Inspections and reviews these data for improvement opportunities or trends. Assists process improvement teams in developing action plans to address practice gaps and foster a culture of safety. 16. Advises the Director of Pharmacy on designing new processes in a way that minimizes safety risk and process inefficiency. Utilize process improvement tools and LEAN principles in designing and implementing new processes or process changes. 17. Participates in the recruitment, selection, orientation, training, and performance management of professional and technical staff in pharmacy service areas. 18. Fosters open inter- and intradepartmental communication between staff and managers. Participates in departmental, organizational and health system committees related to oncology services and cleanroom topics as directed by the Director of Pharmacy 19. Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure smooth operation of the department/service line. 20. Manages procurement, preparation, compounding, and dispensing for oncology service lines. Creates an environment that is dedicated to patient safety for all oncology and hazardous drug therapy provided at the Waterford and Westerly Smilow Cancer Hospital Care Centers and Westerly and LM Hospitals 21. Implements best practices while maintaining compliance with standards, regulations, policies, and procedures in outpatient oncology, including USP 797/800 standards, quality improvement, patient safety standards, pharmacy regulations, and standards of practice pharmacy services. 22. Performs all duties of Clinical Oncology staff pharmacist. 23. Accountability: The individual in the position is held accountable to the Director for maintaining the highest professional standards and the delivery of safe and efficient medication preparation and delivery. This individual is held accountable to staffing standards as documented in the Attendance and Punctuality system and the HR data on performance review completion. 24. Graduate of an accredited College of Pharmacy. Advanced degree (M.S. or Pharm.D.) and/or completion of a residency in hospital pharmacy from a program accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists is strongly preferred. Board Certification, especially in oncology pharmacy (BCOP), is preferred.
Three-five (3-5) years experience in a hospital pharmacy setting with strong working knowledge of the compliance and regulatory issues relative to hospital pharmacy practice, management, and oncology experience preferred.
Current state licensure as Registered Pharmacist in Connecticut and Rhode Island.
Six Sigma or other quality improvement certification or training preferred. Strong project management and problem solving skills desired. Strong interpersonal skill and the ability to coordinate work between diverse groups are essential. Knowledge of DoseEdge, Epic, and Pyxis automation technologies is strongly preferred.
Ability to effectively communicate with all customers. Availability to work all shifts including days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays as needed.
