Produces CT Scans as ordered by a physician following the established policies of the Department. Able to provide appropriate care for patients served, regardless of age. Must provide coverage on weekends, holidays, and off-shifts as deemed necessary in order to maintain level of departmental services.
This job description and requirements for this position have been approved by the medical chairman for the department of diagnostic imaging a well as the executive committee of the medical staff.
Responsibilities: 1. Performs all diagnostic radiographs and associated film processing. 1.1. Uses technical skill and knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy to perform CT exams using appropriate imaging protocols, independently and efficiently. 1.2. Reviews requisitions/EMR orders, contrast questionnaires and prescribes scan protocols to ensure that each patient is scanned appropriately, without need for repeat studies due to technologist error. 1.3. Positions patients properly for requested exam as per ACR positioning guidelines. Upon performing examination, reviews current images for quality and appropriate positioning. 1.4. Performs quality and efficient CT examinations using appropriate protocols, age specific standards and radiation (ALARA) sparing techniques. 1.5. Relays pertinent information to radiologists or other technical staff to minimize errors due to lack of communication, especially during shift change, as noted by supervisor. 1.6. Accurately retrieves and/or enters patient data into the scanner, EMR, PACS as observed by supervisor or review of audit reports. 1.7. Ascertains image quality and transmission of all images to the Synapse patient folder upon completion of each patient exam for subsequent review and interpretation by the radiologist in accordance with departmental policy. 1.8. Performs tube warm up and calibrations daily and when prompted as described in the department quality assurance program and documented by the CT scanner event log. 1.9. Demonstrates the ability to use independent judgment during equipment difficulties to accurately log technical problems, contact service engineer, or call for technical support as appropriate. Troubleshoots equipment issues prior to calling service. 1.10. Communicates concerns to supervisor/manager along with co-workers to ensure smooth workflow with minimal downtime. 1.11. Reports and documents designated quality assurance responsibilities such as:
Patient contrast reactions or extravasations
Patient injuries or complaints
Patient radiation dose
Missing or appropriate exam requisitions
Enters initials into scanner per ACR guidelines 1.12. Provides appropriates shielding. 2. Actively participates in workflow activities in order to ensure the goals of the department are met and runs efficiently 2.1. Assists schedulers, physicians, nursing and other appropriate staff with scheduling, obtaining requisitions or pre-authorization, patient preparation instructions, and other exam-related communications. 2.2. Has minimal inactive scanner time between patients in order to maximize the section?s efficiency and minimize patient delays as observed by supervisor or physician. 2.3. Assists the physician/radiologist as needed with guided medical procedures 2.4. Proactively assumes responsibility to monitor patient exam worklist ie. Review lab values, pregnancy test, obtains IV access, orders and sends contrast to patient area and protocols exams needed. 2.5. Operates equipment using age and dose appropriate protocols necessary to produce quality images for diagnosis or treatment safely and efficiently. 3. Performs quality and compassionate patient care in order to ensure cooperation, safety and satisfaction. Demonstrates accuracy on safety screening and continues to promote our pledge for service excellence. 3.1. Thoroughly explains various procedures to the patient and offer emotional support. 3.2. Accurately reviews and completes all safety and history forms completely. Investigates any questionable items thoroughly prior to patient exam. 3.3. Consistently identifies the patient by name and date of birth confirming verbally with patient and by checking the name band prior to the start of any procedure. 3.4. Ensures a clean and safe environment through daily exam room and equipment inspections. Recognizes and preforms tasks needed to foster good patient care such as room preparation, restocking supplies, and offering assistance to others when possible on a daily basis. 3.5. Performs IV insertion using aseptic technique and administers IV or Oral contrast media under the direction of the radiologist. 4. Performs various record keeping, customer service functions to ensure exam charges are properly billed and communicates feedback 4.1. Consistently selects the correct patient from the worklist. 4.2. Accurately completes/edits charges for exams on Epic to guarantee proper billing and medical record documentation. 4.3. Post processing and transfer of all images to PACS consistently at the time of examination. 4.4. Completes and scans all relevant documents into EPIC and PACS. 4.5. Reports all actual and near miss incidents in a timely manner. 5. Educational activities - Participates in various teaching, learning, and research opportunities in order to further professional knowledge and expertise or to assist in expanding knowledge of others. 5.1. Is receptive to teaching newly -hired technologist as observed by supervisor or input from staff. 5.2. Keeps current with mandated hospital Healthstream training modules, CPR, and other department required training programs each year, as recorded by supervisor/manager. 5.3. Maintains active professional registration/certification and state licensure and provides documentation as recorded by supervisor/manager. 5.4. Keeps current of technical field through reading reference journals and materials or in-services provided by department as observed by supervisor/manager. 5.5. Keeps current on departmental procedures and protocols 5.6. Reviews interoffice mail (intranet) regularly 6. Customer Service - To enhance the patient experience in Diagnostic Radiology, all staff will be responsible to achieve patient satisfaction scores set by the department on the Test & Treatment section of our Press Ganey Survey. 6.1. Staff will present themselves in a friendly and courteous manner. Staff will identify themselves and their roll while encouraging a Patient and Family Center experience. 6.2. Staff will fully explain the procedure and ask if the patient has any additional questions about the procedure. 6.3. Staff will address any comfort issues the patient may have prior to starting the procedure. 6.4. Staff will thank the patient once the procedure is completed and ask the patient if they have any additional questions.
Associates Degree in Radiology preferred.
Minimum one (1) year experience in hospital setting.
ARRT and Connecticut State License required. CT Advanced Certification Preferred, not required.
Able to produce high quality CT scans using a variety of complex protocols.
Must be a team player and maintain accountability and aid in creating a positive patient experience. Maintain the 7 Stanards of Excellance.
Work in a fast pace department while cultivating positive team work.
May be exposed to infectious diseases, or hazardous material. Average clinical radiology setting.
Standing and walking most of the day. Working with lightweight equipment with occasional lifting, pushing and pulling of heavy objects. Must have the ability to hear and observe all the surroundings of the department and have manual dexterity. Assisting in lifting of patient with physical problems.
