Under the direction of the Core Laboratory Manager demonstrates ability to perform a wide variety of routine and some special technical procedures. Demonstrates good time management and organizational skills. Interprets data based on knowledge and experience. Evaluates, troubleshoots and solves routine problems. Participates in quality control, quality assurance, and equipment maintenance programs in the laboratory.
1. Technical Competency: demonstrates technical competency in the performance of routine and complex testing, quality control, component selection and component preparation. 1.1. Determines acceptability of samples and enters patient information correctly into the computer system.Competency is evaluated through direct observation, and record review. 1.2. Is technically proficient in the performance and interpretation of Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis and Blood Gas testing done in the Core Laboratory. Competency is evaluated through direct observation, internal and external proficiency samples, and record review. 1.3. Demonstrates good time management in the performance of assigned tasks while maintaining a high level of quality. Assesses the workload and seeks assistance or takes on additional work as needed. 1.4. Prioritizes to the workload so that medical emergencies are processed first. Organizes routine workload so that a stat request can be added into the batch. Performs multiple tasks simultaneously at a speed appropriate for the degree of difficulty and the individual's experience level. 1.5. Performs Quality Control as assigned, according to procedure. Completely documents results in computer or QC sheet and takes appropriate action or notifies supervisor if result is abnormal. 1.6. Understands operation, quality control requirements and preventative maintenance required on all equipment used in the Core Laboratory. Performs routine equipment QC and PM as directed; refers problems beyond the scope of ability to the Core Laboratory Manager. 1.7. Keeps work area neat, well-stocked, and disinfected after use 2. Recordkeeping, Documentation, Computer Skills: Provides for accurate documentation and reporting of results to ensure quality of patient care by demonstrating good computer and recordkeeping skills. 2.1. Clearly, legibly, and accurately completes any hand written record. Corrects handwriting mistakes according to standards. 2.2. Enters information and test results in the computer system accurately and thoroughly. Brings data entry errors to the attention of the Core Laboratory Manager for correction. 2.3. Keeps current with computer related skills needed for the Core Laboratory. 2.4. Accesses the Laboratory,and Hospital computer systems only for information that is work-related. 2.5. Maintains confidentiality of all patient related data 2.6. Handles phone inquiries and requests for results in a courteous and professional manner, following Department of Laboratory Medicine customer service guidelines. Knows when a call should be referred to a supervisor or physician. 3. Independence/Initiative: Demonstrates independent thinking and action. Demonstrates ability to evaluate, troubleshoot, and problem solve. 3.1. Recognizes situations that are inconsistent with policy/ procedure or quality patient care. Documents all occurrences on the Variance Report form and performs immediate corrective action as necessary. Makes recommendations for improvements that can be made as a result of the occurrence. 3.2. Recognizes the operational needs of the Core Laboratory outside of own work assignment. Offers assistance to others when own assignments are completed. 3.3. Assists in the evaluation of new products, procedures or equipment that would benefit the Core Laboratory by reducing costs, increasing productivity or improving quality. Makes recommendations for their implementation into the workflow. 3.4. Participates in teaching/orientation activities for new employees, MT students, and others. Communicates effectively and maintains a positive, respectful, interpersonal relationship with learners. 4. Professionalism: Demonstrates professionalism at all times both in attitude and in approach to all work activities. Demonstrates a commitment to personal career growth in the field of Laboratory Medicine/ Blood Banking. 4.1. Ensures continued expertise and knowledge by attaining a minimum of 5 continuing education points each year, as defined in the Laboratory Continuing Education SOP. 4.2. Demonstrates by example the importance of teamwork. Fosters a team approach to completing work and offers to help others. Maintains positive relationships with co-workers, supervisors, physicians and hospital staff. 4.3. Recognizes and demonstrates that the telephones are for business use only; restricts personal use for emergencies only. 4.4. Adheres to hospital policies concerning time limitation for break/lunch. Demonstrates flexibility in scheduling so that the Core Laboratory is adequately covered. 4.5. Takes ownership and responsibility for issues. Accepts professional direction as a way to improve performance. 4.6. Meets hospital's attendance requirements to ensure proper coverage by incurring no more than 3 incidents of unscheduled absence in a 6 month period or 5 incidents in a review year as noted in attendance record. 4.7. Incurs no more than 3 incidents of unscheduled tardiness (as defined in departmental policy for arriving late or leaving before the end of a scheduled work shift) in a 6 month period or 5 incidents in a review year as noted in attendance record.
Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology or equivalent with MLS/ MT (ASCP) certification or equivalent or eligibility.
One (1) to two (2) years' experience in an accredited Clinical Laboratory preferred.
MLS/MT (ASCP) certification or equivalent or eligibility
Working knowledge of equipment, instrumentation, and materials used in a Clinical Laboratory. Efficiency in word processing applications, spreadsheet design/utilization, and use web based resources. Basic knowledge of laboratory information systems. Must possess excellent communication skills and ability to communicate in an effective and professional manner with hospital staff. Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills. The ability to work as a member of a team is essential.
Performs duties in accordance with established Clinical Laboratory standards. Performs a variety of routine and some special tests and procedures. Demonstrates good time management and organizational skills.
Evaluates, troubleshoots and solves routine problems. Interprets data based on knowledge and experience.
This job does require some standing, walking and light lifting.
