Performs clerical and receptionist duties as it applies to remote site Blood Draw Stations. Performs approved ancillary testing and collects specimens. Distributes laboratory results-reports, responds professionally to phone/individual inquiries and coordinates patient visits for lab services. Maintains a neat and orderly work area. Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following. Other duties may be applicable. Communicates with ancillary staff in an effective and professional manner.
Responsibilities: 1. Coordinates patient visit to minimize the patient's wait time. 1.1. Processes paperwork within a few minutes of receipt as observed by supervisor or from patient feedback. 1.2. Transcribes patient and Physician information correctly and completely (onto Laboratory requisitions) as observed by Supervisor or random review of requisition or patient file. 1.3. Submits proper patient demographics, insurance and diagnosis information as part of the electronic patient registration process. 1.4. Insures that applicable patient demographic registration information is updated, correct and current as evidenced through patient registration review. 2. Collects appropriate specimens such as blood, urine, cultures, etc. based on Physician orders. 2.1. Explains protocols and answers patients questions regarding specimen collection in a professional manner as observed by supervisor and as evidenced by feedback from patients and/or staff. 2.2. Directs patients into room, introducing self and provides a dignified atmosphere as noted by staff and through feedback from patients or visitors. 2.3. Identifies patient correctly and collects appropriate specimen for test required based on Physician test request, and follows established handling procedures as observed by random specimen review or department feedback. 2.4. Collects specimen in compliance with Uniiversal precautions as observed by supervisor. 2.5. Disposes of infectious waste in appropriate containers according to established departmental procedures as observed by supervisor. 2.6. Transcribes physician orders to the Laboratory requisition correctly and completely and clarifies unclear Physician orders. 3. Performs laboratory data entry events associated with specimen collection. 3.1. Performs correct test order entry based on written Physician orders for laboratory testing. 3.2. Matches laboratory accession number created to the appropriate specimen collected as noted by random orders review, Physician and/or department feedback. 3.3. Correctly labels all specimens in accordance to established laboratory guidelines as observed by random specimen review or department feedback. 3.4. Forwards completed laboratory reports to the appropriate Physician(s), in a timely manner as observed through Physician feedback.or requisition/report information. 4. Prepares Specimens for transport to the main Laboratory. 4.1. Documents pertinent Blood Bank information, as needed for transfusion, or any other unique information required to insure appropriate distribution of laboratory related information, as evidenced by random review or department feedback.. 4.2. Properly prepares specimens and requisition for courier transport according to Department guidelines as evedenced by specimen review on delivery. 4.3. Insures appropriate handling of special test specimen requirements (i.e. PT, PTT, Homocyseine, etc.) according to department guidelines. 4.4. Insures that NO specimen is left overnight at the remote site location based on Physician feedback, supervisor review or questionable missing sample. 4.5. Provides a completed transit manifest (where applicable) for all specimens submitted by courier to the laboratory.as observed through random specimen manifest review. 5. Maintains departmental records and supplies. 5.1. Maintains daily patient documentation log as evidenced by periodic review of patient log by supervisor. 5.2. Insures that all activity documentation logs (temperature, decontamination, eyewash, etc.) are complete and current as observed by Supervisor review. 5.3. Maintains appropriate monthly medical waste (Stericycle) disposal log and follows up on missing or incomplete manifests. 5.4. Maintains appropriate inventory of supplies and checks for and discards items containing an approaching expiration date (i.e. within the next 28-31 days). 5.5. Completes and distributes all NOPP and Patient Authorization forms to Admitting and Medical Records respectively. 5.6. Insures that a copy of the Physician order-Laboratory Requisition is sent to medical records on a regular basis as dictateded by policy and procedure. 5.7. Insures that the Standing Order's file is current and appropriately documented based on periodic review. 6. Plans and/or implements care for assigned patients. 6.1. Demonstrates knowledge of developmental stages from adolescent to old age and applies developmental theories/concepts when planning and implementing care for the adult patient as observed by supervisor and/or indicated by feedback from patient or staff. 6.2. Demonstrates knowledge of developmental stages from toddler to adolescent and applies developmental theories/concepts when planning and implementing care for the adult patient as observed by supervisor and/or indicated by feedback from patient or staff. 6.3. Demonstrates knowledge of developmental stages from infant to toddler and applies developmental theories/concepts when planning and implementing care for the adult patient as observed by supervisor and/or indicated by feedback from patient or staff. 7. Participates in additional activities that are necessary to satisfy department needs and requirements. 7.1. Assists in implementing changes in existing procedures as designated by departmental needs as indicated by feedback and observed by supervisor. 7.2. Performs special assignments as directed by supervisor according to standard procedure within the allotted time. 7.3. Acts as a mentor to phlebotomy students or new staff. 7.4. Communicates with the hospital laboratory and/or supervisor, when necessary, to insure appropriate staffing for remote site Blood Draw Station.
High school diploma or equivalent. Graduation of a Phlebotomy program preferred.
Phlebotomy experience preferred; Laboratory specimen processing skills helpful.
Phlebotomy Certification and CPR preferred.
Good interpersonal skills. Knowledge of general Laboratory and diagnostic terms.
Maintain a minimum rating of 4.8 on Patient Satisfaction survey.
Engage with appropriate Physician/staff interactions to clarify diagnosis, test requests, patient data.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
