Responsible for performance of all speech- language, communicative, and swallowing diagnostic and rehabilitative procedures on inpatients and/or outpatients; specifically, conducts evaluations and analyzes the results to diagnose the disorder; recommends and conducts appropriate rehabilitation intervention; counsels the patient and family (as approved by the patient) as to the current status of the patient and plans appropriate intervention to address the specific needs of the patient; writes reports on all diagnostic and rehabilitative procedures in the EMR.
Responsibilities: 1. Clinical 1.1. Able to interpret physician referrals to perform basic clinical evaluations. 1.2. All patient care responsibilites will be performed consistent with age-specific criteria (see attached). 1.3. Demonstrates technical skill and accuracy in performing basic treatments. 1.4. Develops population specific treatment programs which reflect compliance with established clinical protocols where appropriate, monitors patient responses and terminates treatments when appropriate. 1.5. Sets measurable and appropriate goals which reflect patient/family involvement and seeks appropriate assistance. 1.6. Provides patient and family education. 1.7. Initiates and maintains current records and reports concerning patient course, re-evaluates and updates goals, and plans as necessary, based on patient's response to treatment. 1.8. Uses equipment in a safe and effective manner. 1.9. Reports malfunctioning or missing equipment to supervisor and takes corrective action to remove equipment from use. 1.10. Assumes responsibility for order of working areas. 1.11. Maintains a high standard of professional accountability with respect to safety, efficiency, effectiveness, ethics and legal issues. 1.12. Demonstrates compliance with all hospital standards and regulations. 1.13. Participates constructively in team conferences, rounds, clinics, and discharge planning, as appropriate. 1.14. Utilizes Assistant and support staff and volunteers appropriately in the delivery of patient care. 2. Educational 2.1. Attends department in-services. 2.2. Assists with orientation of staff as appropriate. 2.3. Assists in orientation, education and guidance of support staff. 2.4. Seeks opportunities to expand own knowledge of the profession and related fields. 2.5. Meets required standards for documentation of attended inservices and Continuing Contact hours when applicable. 3. Administration 3.1. Complies with Hospital and Department Policies and Procedures. 3.2. Participates in department Quality Assurance activities. 3.3. Plans and organizes daily schedule optimally use time. 3.4. Appropriately addresses patient coverage issues for scheduled time off. 3.5. Carries patient load that reflects productivity standard of unit. 3.6. Maintains documentation in accordance with hospital policy and regulatory requirements (HCFA, JCAHO, etc.). 4. Clinical Supervision 4.1. Participates in regular meetings with supervisor and/or team leader and reports pertinent information on a timely basis. 4.2. Appropriately delegates responsibility to students and CFY's as required and maintains appropriate level of clinical supervision. 4.3. Reports directly to area supervisor and indirectly to team leader. 4.4. Provides clinical supervision to students as assigned. 5. Human Relations Skills 5.1. Demonstrates respect and regard for dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsive and courteous hospital environment.
Graduate of a Master's Degree in Speech-Language Pathology; Completion of Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology preferred.
One (1) to two (2) years as a clinical speech language pathologist in a large medical center based practice preferred. Experience working with children and/or adults depending on the assigned setting. Clinical experience with a variety of diagnoses to include post-surgical, developmental, neurological, genetic, oncologic and traumatic. Adult acute care, FEES and MBS experience preferred, high level acuity caseload, trach & speaking valve experience a plus.
Must maintain a current unrestricted license to practice as a Speech - Language Pathologist in CT.
The individual should demonstrate age-specific knowledge in basic anatomy and physiology, psychology and speech-language pathology theory, evaluations, and treatment techniques. Observation skills, communication skills (both verbal and written), and an ability to work with others in a synergistic manner are essential. The individual should also be willing and able to assume increased responsibilities as required. Demonstrates a high level of independence and leadership in assigned clinical area. Experience with FEES, MBS and TEP preferred.
Accountable for providing timely assessment and treatment of patients in a manner that provides an exceptional patient experience and adheres to applicable state and federal regulations and is consistent with professional standards. Accurate and timely documentation in the EMR is required. Actively supports the mission, vision and values of Yale-New Haven Hospital. Legally accountable for all tasks delegated to Assistants, support staff, and students.
Requires working with highly complex cases in a fast-paced environment. Position requires knowledge of age-specific assessments and treatment interventions.
May require exposure to blood and body fluids, hazardous materials and communicable diseases; long periods of standing and walking; lifting and positioning of patients.
