SUMMARY

The polysomnographic technologist, under the direction of the supervisor and the Patient Services Manager ,

prepares the pediatric patient, conducts overnight physiologic studies -polysomnograms(PSG), collects vital signs

and other pertinent information to ensure proper interpretation by the physician /polysomnographer in accordance

with established policies and procedures as assigned. Maintains vigilience in a non -stimulating environment and

knows when to consult the supervisor physician regarding the patients status. Attention to detail is critical since the

quality of data from the PSG is solely the responsibility of the technologist.

Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the the direction of the supervisor, prepares the pediatric patient, conducts overnight physiologic

studies, polysomnograms (PSG), and collects pertinent information to ensure proper interpretation by the

Physician/Polysomnographer in accordance with established polices and procedures as assigned. .

Formats optical disks for data acquisition, retrieves and archives data into the computer system.

Anticipates and recognizes computer hard and optical disk data space limitations, transfers and

archives data to prevent data loss during the overnight study

Under the direction of the supervisor, prepares the child (and parent) in an age appropriate manner by

explaining all procedures involved in setting up the polysomnogram.

1 .3 Sets up and calibrates monitoring equipment including computer interfaces.

Measures and applies appropriate EEG electrodes, applies appropriate EKG, EMG, and EOG

monitoring electrodes, and places and securely attaches recording transducers to measure airflow,

respiratory effort, oximetry, and capnography and performs physiological calibration.

Institutes "lights out" and notes patient data, monitors the patient polysomnography, recognizes and

records clinical and physiological events such as standard sleep states in infants through teenagers,

notes and corrects equipment malfunctions during the PSG and alters patient's environment to insure

the required sleep/wake data.

Under the direction of the physician, initiates and titrates nasal CPAP therapy based on physician's

orders and established protocols.

Ensures that all quality standards have been performed and are acceptable prior to and during all patient

testing procedures

Records pre and post test physiological calibration before sleep onset and after awakening, removes

electrodes and transducers and assists patient with hygiene as necessary, including bathing and

shampoo for young infants.

Follows YNHH and the Pediatric Sleep Center established safety precautions and procedures in the

performance of all duties to insure a safe and clean environment

Recognizes and responds appropriately to patient's medical problems and physiological events,

especially respiratory problems, seizures or cardiac dysrhythmias including notifying the Medical

Director, activating emergency button for urgent help and administering supplemental oxygen or basic

life support until help arrives.

Checks availability and functions of emergency equipment (suction, ambu, airway, 0xygen source) prior

to study commencement.

infection control procedures. Assists in cleaning and organizing the department on own initiative.

5 .1 Majority of work is done overnight, ability to maintain wakefulness is essential.

Reviews existing information in the patient record, examines orders and protocols for study, recognizes

sleep/wake or respiratory complaints, sleep patterns and potential need for treatment intervention during

testing, collects pertinent patient information to insure proper interpretation by the physician and

communicates with ordering physician or center/lab director to clarify unclear or inappropriate orders and

communicates information about the patient's status.

Qualifications

 

 

 

EDUCATION High school graduate. Previous education in allied health or life science is helpful in assimilating the normal and

abnormal physiology, as well as in working with the sophisticated equipment used during the polysomnogram. .

Become A Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) within 6 months of hire following 18 month clinical

experience at the pediatric sleep center.

 

Experience

A minimum of two (2)years in Health Care related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

if not a RPSGT. Training in the Pediatric Sleep Center may be a possibility.

Minimum one (1) year health care experience that includes neonates, young infants, toddlers and special needs

children preferred.

 

 

 

 

SPECIAL SKILLS:

Has the ability to understand normal cardiorespiratory, neurologic, and sleep/wake physiology.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY

Attention to detail is critical, since the quality of data is solely the responsibility of the technologist. The individual

must be able to maintain vigilance in a non-stimulating, overnight environment. Ability to troubleshoot problems as

they arise.

Must have the ability to integrate a basic understanding of anatomy and physiology with sleep /wake pathology.

Excellent communication skills are required for pediatric patient preparation, performance of complex physiological

monitoring insuring patient safety and comfort, education about sleep disordered breathing, as well as for discussing

patients and clinical situations with physicians. PSG studies use sophisticated medical equipment including

computers, electroencephalographs, electrocardiographs, polygraphs, skin electrodes and adhesives, airflow and

respiratory effort measuring devices, audio/video recording systems, nasal CPAP and other ventilatory assists

devices under the supervision of RN/RT, pulse oximeters and end-tidal CO2 analyzers, thermometers and blood

pressure cuffs, and disinfecting and sterilizing agents. Must understand the function of the equipment used to

monitor and record breathing (airflow/effort), electroencephalogram (brain waves), electrocardiograms (heart rate and

rhythms), electromyograms (muscle activity), pulse oximetry (blood oxygenation/saturations, and capnography

(end-tidal carbon dioxide/ventilation). Must be able to assimilate data from several sources and anticipate initiation

of care, in accordance with protocols, to prevent harm to the patient. Must recognize sleep and cardiorespiratory

pathology when it occurs in the laboratory and respond with the appropriate interventions to ensure patient safety.

 

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:

Obtain RPSGT credential within 2 years.

 

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMAND:
