The Nurse Manager is responsible for ensuring high quality, safe, reliable and efficient care. They are an integral care team member and designated clinic lead who serves as point person for clinic operations issues and as a consistent initial clinical contact for new patients and their families. The Nurse Manager performs initial patient assessments, provides education and navigates the patient/family across care settings according to the established plan of care. The Nurse Manager synchronizes patient/family care across care settings from the initial referral and consultative visit to handoff to Physician Practice Coordinator, Infusion nursing staff or other facility depending on care plan. The Nurse Manager will collaborate with the Clinical Program Manager on a consistent basis to ensure communication of effectiveness of the above and major role responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • 1. Shares accountability for safe, effective, high quality care and optimal patient outcomes and patient satisfaction.
  • 2. Serves as the clinical leader responsible to oversee safe patient flow is maintained and appropriate nursing and support staff are available while ensuring safety and efficiency.
  • 3. Serves as clinic point person for identification and resolution or escalation of issues arising in day-to-day practice, ensures assignments and daily team meetings/huddles, anticipates delays and facilitates timely forward flow of patients during daily clinic operations.
  • 4. In collaboration with the service line educator, monitors clinical competency of staff and fosters development of situational decision making to ensure patient safety.
  • 5. Regularly reviews new patient referrals, assists Intake Specialist in determining initial consultation scheduling priorities and confirms that data collection is complete prior to visit. Collects/documents patient data for new patients and completes Initial Nursing Assessment during pre-visit patient contacts and new patient visits. Initiates survivorship care plans on eligible patients.
  • 6. Develops a patient/family education plan based on initial assessment findings and relevant to teaching/ learning topics and styles and identified special needs and preferences. Documents/communicates to team members.
  • 7. Uses findings of assessment data, team-based interactions and established triggers to initiate referrals for supportive care. Liaises across care settings to ensure familiarity with patient case and special needs; ensures that patient safety needs are met during handoffs to point of care staff (eg, infusion, surgery, therapeutic radiation). Anticipates and/or identifies potential logistical, financial, personal barriers to patient adherence to visit schedule and therapeutic plan; develops a plan to minimize or eliminate obstacles and refers to appropriate team members to provide ongoing support.
  • 8. Assists in the identification of candidates for open clinical trials and communicates to providers and the research team. Has familiarity with and promotes clinical trials and research activities.
  • 9. Provides direct patient care as required to ensure appropriate staffing levels and skill mix are maintained.
  • 10. Participates in interviewing and hiring of new staff and complete performance reviews as required to promote and ensure staff development.
  • 11. Coach, mentor and document staff performance to ensure competence, provide feedback for improvement and utilize disciplinary process as needed.
  • 12. Participate in strategies to ensure the financial well-being of the organization and ensure cost adherence and effective management of labor and non-labor fiscal responsibilities.
  • 13. Ensures the clinic is in a continued state of readiness for all accreditation and regulatory surveys.
  • 14. Sets and strives to meet annual goals for professional development. Maintains membership in at least one professional organization as appropriate. Achieves/maintains oncology nursing certification. Actively participates in YNHH-L+M and care center committees and projects
  • 15. Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure smooth operation of the department/unit.

Qualifications

EDUCATION


Bachelor's degree in nursing required; Masters preferred. RI RN Licensure


EXPERIENCE


Two years of clinical nurse experience and a minimum of 1 year leadership/supervisory experience (may include committees, charge role, project management or other experiences that demonstrate leadership qualities. Oncology RN experience is required. Ambulatory Oncology RN experience is preferred.


LICENSURE


Active RI RN license, OCN certification preferred. BLS required.


SPECIAL SKILLS

Excellent interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills required. Knowledge of adult learning competencies and patient teaching skills. Ability to work autonomously and maintain flexibility.
