This position is accountable for the provision of quality outcome-based educational programs and practice support, which promote initial and ongoing competency and continuous development of nursing staff. Accountable 24/7 for staff education needs.

Responsibilities
1 - Responsibilties
1.1 Develops, organizes, implements and evaluates Unite-Based and Service Line education and programs
to ensure competencies of nursing personnel.
1.2 Integrates data and outcome from Quality/Safety initiatives into education and practice support.
1.3 Participates in Nursing Research activities.
1.4 Participates in the departmental short term planning related to education and practice support.
1.5 Represents Nursing Education on various committees and practice support.
1.6 Selects appropriate instructional strategies for programs.
1.7 Prioritizes educational programs for development and implementation.
1.8 Implements educational programs in accordance with requirements of the unit and service line.
1.9 Conducts educational activities according to established education standards.
1.10 Collaborates with other educators in developing, organizing, implementing and evaluating departmentspecific programs/projects.
1.11 Designs, implements and evaluates patient simulations as an essential part of the learning experience.
1.12 Serves as a role model in the practice of nursing.
2 - Leadership
2.1 Demonstrates knowledge of the American Nurses Association Standards for Nursing Professional
Development.
2.2 Demonstrates knowledge of the structure, philosophy, standard, goals, policies and procedures of the
core education department.
2.3 Integrates knowledge of organizational, Nursing and educational services, philosophies, goals and
priorities into educational activities.
2.4 Articulates linkages between Nursing Leadership, quality improvement, nursing and practice
education.
2.5 Participates in the organization's and nursing management performance improvement program.
2.6 Integrates knowledge of the scope of nursing practice and roles and responsibilities of personnel in
curriculum design.
3 - Learner
3.1 Use multiple approaches and sources of information to identify and validate nursing service personnel's
learning needs.
3.2 Facilitates the process for learners to assume their responsibility for maintaining competency in
practice.
3.3 Identifies learning needs of nursing personnel which includes organizational and nursing goals/priorities
and available resources.
4 - Program Planning
4.1 Conducts learning needs assessments regularly to identify organizational, departmental and units
education and practice needs.
4.2 Participates in the prioritization of the educational requirements for nursing personnel.
4.3 Leads in the organization, coordination and implementation of the formal orientation for new hires.
5 - Educational Design
5.1 Develops educational offering based on organization/clinical priorities and the learning needs of the
intended audience.
5.2 Incorporates teaching methodologies appropriate to the learner and the desired outcomes.
5.3 Develops effective educational programs utilizing various teaching methodologies.
5.4 Provides formal and informal educational programs to meet identified learning needs of nursing
personnel.
5.5 Implements educational activities designed to insure compliance with standards of regulatory agencies.
5.6 Ensures activities promote learning in three domains - critical thinking, technical and interpersonal.
5.7 Utilizes teaching strategies appropriate to the content, learners and time frames.
5.8 Designs mechanisms for feedback to the learner.
5.9 Utilizes appropriate resources for presenting educational activities.
5.10 Utilizes data collection methods to analyze and evaluate teaching and learning outcomes.
5.11 Demonstrates integration of data from QI, clinical practice and other appropriate resources in evaluating
the effectiveness of educational activities.
5.12 Utilizes age-specific information in planning and development of educational programs.
5.13 Participates in designing and implementing simulations to facilitate learning with authentic patient
problems, clinical decisions and reflection in practice.
5.14 Markets educational activities to the intended audience in a standardized and timely manner.
5.15 Identifies departmental, organizational and external agency requirements for practice, documentation
and record keeping.
5.16 Utilizes critical thinking skills to identify appropriate education interventions.
5.17 Actively participates in service line and unit initiatives as indicated
6 - Resource & Facilities
6.1 Demonstrates knowledge of the financial resources available and the impact on program design.
6.2 Assesses and uses appropriate equipment, materials, facilities and educational technology.
6.3 Assesses and uses support services such as library, printing and audio/visual services.
6.4 Incorporates the appropriateness and effectiveness of material resources and facilities in the learner
evaluation.
7 - Records and Reports
7.1 Identifies organizational, service line and external agency requirements for documentation and record
keeping.
7.2 Contributes to the development of reports which document progress towards attainment of goals.
7.3 Maintains staff confidentiality and limits access to educational records to authorized personnel.
8 - Evidence-Based Practice
8.1 Promotes best practice in bedside care.
8.2 Identifies and addresses variations in clinical practice.
8.3 Collaborates in defining and utilizing best practices in patient care delivery.
8.4 Serves as a role model for practice development.
8.5 Assists in the development of standards and protocols to support best practice and patient safety.
8.6 Seeks collaboration/consultation with other healthcare professionals in coordinating /evaluating patient
care outcomes.
8.7 Critiques and communicates research findings to nursing staff for use in clinical decision making.
9 - Professional Development
9.1 Assists in the identification of staff for preceptor development.
9.2 Coaches staff to participate and further professional development.
9.3 Assists staff with portfolio development of clinical ladder (RCAP) advancement.
9.4 Encourages staff to apply for specialty or nursing organization membership or national certification.
9.5 Coordinates and disseminates information on current and continuing educational offerings.
9.6 Acts as a role model in area of expertise and professional practice by being self directed, self motivated,
maintaining expertise and promoting nursing profession.
10 - Practice Readiness
10.1 Facilitates unit orientation for nursing students by collaborating with the core department.
10.2 Ensures preceptors are provided with current resource materials and ongoing education and support.
10.3 Works with students and faculty to identify student learning needs and outcomes measures.
11 - Measurement Strategies
11.1 Integrates nursing performance indicators in education activities.
11.2 Participates in unit, service line and hospital audits and mock surveys.
11.3 In coordination with nursing unit leadership ensures appropriate, cost- effective selection, use of
equipment, instruments and supplies.
11.4 Participates in and/or leads hospital or department based committees.
11.5 Utilizes established tools to assess competency and improve outcomes.
12 - Professional Self-Development
12.1 Seeks out opportunities for professional growth through organizational affiliations or certification within
specialty area.
12.2 Maintains a current knowledge base in areas of adult learning principles, clinical practice and
leadership.
12.3 Contributes to the profession through participation in research, publication, consultation and/or

Qualifications
EDUCATION
Bachelor's Degree and Masters degree required. One which needs to be in nursing (MSN or BSN)
EXPERIENCE
3-5 years of active clinical nursing experience, one year of relevant teaching experience preferred, Current CT Registered Nurse License, Certification in nursing staff development and/or specialty area preferred
LICENSURE
Current CT Registered Nurse License, Certification in nursing staff development and/or specialty area preferred
