Job Description

Under the direction of the Executive Director of Occupational and Employee Population Health, Manager of Employee Health and Safety and the Medical Director of Wellness and Employee Population Health, with a dotted line relationship to the Office of Emergency Preparedness (OEP), this individual provides leadership and program development, implementation and management of the YNHHS Workplace Violence Prevention Program. Works closely with system Health and Safety Specialists in developing and supporting data focused, collaborative initiatives that promote reductions in instances of workplace violence, improved workplace safety and adherence to regulatory mandates. Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams, including the Office of Emergency Preparedness (OEP), Security/Protective Services Departments, Legal Affairs / Risk Management , Institute for Excellence (IFE), Human Resources (HR), Nursing and Physician Leadership, Facilities, Infection Control, Accreditation Safety and Regulatory Affairs (ASRA) Occupational Health, and other key stakeholders as defined. Responsible for the overall development and coordination and training of defined YNHHS staff for prevention of workplace violence, including de-escalation training (CPI or other non-violent crisis intervention program). Ensures that health and safety training and content applying to healthcare workers are created and conducted in compliance with federal, state and local regulations

Responsibilities

  • 1. Ensures Regulatory Compliance of YNHHS with OSHA, TJC, CMS and other regulatory bodies as applicable to Workplace Violence Prevention Programs.
    • 1.1 Assists leadership in responses to OSHA visits and/or complaints to provide guidance on the Workplace Violence Prevention Programs.
  • 2. Establish, implement and maintain Workplace Violence Prevention Program for each Delivery Network within YNHHS
    • 2.1 Maintain Workplace Violence Committee at Each Delivery Network by acting as facilitator and mentor in OSHA, JC, CMS, and DPH requirements. Ensure records of meetings and reporting are kept.
  • 3. Establish, Implement and Maintain YNHHS Workplace Violence Prevention Training Program (CPI / De-escalation)
    • 3.1 Conducts ongoing review of all YNHHS/Delivery Network job descriptions to determine WPV training requirements and computer-based training category for each based on position, department, job duties and level of risk. Performs entry of WPV training requirements into Healthstream. Develop standardized training requirements with regards to content and frequency

Qualifications

EDUCATION


Bachelors degree in a related field required; Master of Science degree in occupational safety, criminal justice, health management or industrial hygiene preferred.


EXPERIENCE


Five years in occupational health, health and safety and/or emergency preparedness required. Performance management training preferred . Recommended but not required is certification by the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses, Inc., Board of Certified Healthcare Safety Management, Industrial Hygienists, First Aid and BLS certification preferred. Demonstrated participation in OSHA and TJC compliance training. Demonstrated experience in implementing hospital -wide training and/or compliance programs. Experience with OSHA compliance preferred.. Experience in a combination of the following is essential: clinical processes and outcomes management, education planning, business development, physician relations, marketing, strategic planning and/or financial analysis.


LICENSURE


Certification from the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention as trainer, or equivalent; must become certified within 6 months of hire and maintain certification throughout employment.


SPECIAL SKILLS


Trained and experienced in de-escalation training in healthcare settings. Excellent critical thinking, analysis and assessment skills for successful process improvement planning and monitoring. Ability to lead and motivate work teams. Proven interpersonal communication, negotiation and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently. Self motivated, goal-oriented individual. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, organizational, and customer service skills. Must be self-motivating and have the ability to exercise independent judgment in the development of plans and protocols to be submitted for approval and day-to-day work routine. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must have demonstrated knowledge of OSHA regulations and DPH and TJC standards. Must be familiar with the following applications: Word , Excel, PowerPoint, and appropriate HTML database and report writer software; and SYSTOC and Epic programs . Must be able to plan, coordinate, implement and evaluate multiple facets of occupational health and safety. Must have a willingness to learn and apply knowledge. Must be able to conduct training sessions to large groups of employees.


PHYSICAL DEMAND


Valid Connecticut driver's license as regular visits to all YNHHS locations are required. Early morning / evening meetings as needed, must be able to flex hours to accommodate for committees / meetings as needed. Position duties and responsibilities may require prolonged standing and walking; use of sight, hearing and touch; and the moving /lifting (or assisting with) employees and supplies/equipment of varying weights in the course of clinical duties or work evaluations. Must be able to lift and push/pull minimum of 30 lbs.
