Overview

In addition to the daily histology responsibilities, this employee takes on a leadership role within the section. Must oversee personnel and technical procedures while possessing an in depth knowledge of the histology department. Must have the ability to work independently while aiding and collaborating with the section manager. Data correlation, instrument trouble shooting, new employee training and problem solving are required. Will participate in quality control, quality assurance and inventory management programs of the laboratory as needed. Excellent organizational and technical skills are required, with multi-tasking a priority.

Responsibilities

  • 1. Maintain current knowledge and skills to perform a wide variety of processes in the histology laboratory including, but not limited to, specimen embedding, specimen cutting, coverslipping and labeling, routine and special staining, immunohistochemical staining. Maintain a working knowledge of chemistry, mathematics, physics, anatomy and biology to aid in troubleshooting problems. Demonstrate advanced technical proficiency in all areas of the department with the ability to identify problems and trouble shoot independently of the section manager.
  • 2. Leadership skills that build team collaboration, promote learning, growth and adaptation to change. Provide proper training and education for any new technician/technologist as to procedures, use of and storage of reagents/materials and policies. Update current staff on any new procedures and policy changes. Demonstrate good time management skills assessing work flow and work assignments of personnel to properly assist in operational needs. Cooperate with all co-workers, thereby displaying a team approach by example. Scheduling staff for effective department management. Ensure that all policies, procedures and manuals are up to date for state and CAP inspections. If necessary, write new or revise existing procedures for the Histology and Immunohistochemistry Procedure manuals for approval by Manager/Director.
  • 3. Promote the Greenwich Hospital Service Excellence program and maintain confidentiality in all aspects of job performance.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

 

2 years of college, ASCP certification or at least three years of experience in an active histology laboratory with on the job training; Bachelor degree preferred

 

EXPERIENCE

 

Minimum 5 years of histology lab work. Documented expertise in all aspects of job responsibility. 

 

LICENSURE

 

ASCP certification or equivalent

 

SPECIAL SKILLS

 

Maintain a working knowledge of all aspects of Histology to aid in troubleshooting problems in any area of the section. Intense concentration and attention to detail are required with minimal tolerance for errors. Work under stressful conditions with high time pressure, strong interpersonal skills required. Must have a good working knowledge of the AP computer system as well as general computer use. Takes an active role in overseeing the operation of the section in the absence of the manager.

 

PHYSICAL DEMAND

 

Lifting of medium weight objects. Close machine work and the use of sharp knives and instruments. Intense concentration and attention to detail, average laboratory conditions; exposure to formaldehyde, caustic agents and other hazardous solvents.
