Responsible for the ongoing management of the labor & delivery patient care and operations to facilitate clinical and service excellence to include: the management of L&D nurses and staff, the management of the delivery of quality patient care and the facilitation of patient flow to internal and external resources; the facilitation of efficient operations to support the delivery of patient care; and the ongoing management of regulatory and organizational compliance requirements. Responsible for performing all duties in compliance with the Bridgeport Hospital mission, values and customer service standards.

Responsibilities

40 1. Manages the performance of Labor & Delivery nurses and staff to facilitate clinical and service excellence.
1 .1 Reviews resumes and applications and identifies candidates to participate in the selection process.
1 .2 Conducts employment interviews and participates in hiring process.
1 .3 Assists with the deployment of resources and the orientation process for new employees.
Evaluates new staff performance via orientation checklists , direct observation, return demonstration,
documentation review, and staff feedback. Conducts interventions as necessary to ensure compliance
with clinical and operational policies and procedures.

Monitors the performance of the nursing team and other labor & delivery staff by direct, ongoing
observation, return demonstration, documentation reviews, clinical rounds, safety rounds, and patient
rounds.

Provides ongoing positive and contructive feedback and coaching to nurses and other labor & delivery
staff to promote performance excellence.

Prepares and conducts annual performance appraisals for designated employees per policy and
procedures under guidance from ANM & NM.

1 .8 Conducts disciplinary actions per policy and procedures as required.
Conducts development discussions with staff to promote voluntary staff certifications , ongoing education
and participation in labor & delivery and hospital-wide projects, committees, and initiatives.

Provides ongoing clinical and operational assistance to ensure labor & delivery team has the resources,tools, and information required for job performance.

Manages the ongoing delivery of quality patient care and facilitates patient flow to internal and external
resources.

 

Receives and provides report, and evaluates labor & delivery volume, patients' status, staffing resources
and operational requirements. Working with Women's Care Center leadership & Charge RNs & deploys
resources accordingly.

Provides information and answers inquiries from nurses, physicians and other labor & delivery team
members as plans of care are implemented.

Conducts staff rounds to assess progress of patient care delivery and provides support to labor &
delivery team members.

Reassigns resources and initiates interventions as necessary to expedite the delivery of care as patient
requirements develop.

Provides clinical and operational assistance to labor & delivery team to manage routine and non-rountine
issues, resource deficits, physicians' concerns and ancillary departments' concerns.

Rounds with patients and customers to answer inquiries and confirms satisfactory staff performance in
the delivery of patient care and service.

Takes action to resolve customer concerns or complaints upon receipt . Follows up with customer and
staff to confirm resolution.

Conducts problem solving and conflect resolution per policy and procedures as necessary to facilitate
effective staff performance and optimum patient care.

Reviews documentation to ensure patients' plans of care have been implemented per policy and
procedures. Provides assistance with treatment as necessary.

2 .10 Monitors and ensures the completion of disposition for labor & delivery patients.
Collaborates with labor & delivery team members, other staff and care givers to formulate action plans
for patients requiring additional follow up care.

Conducts quality assurance audits; reports on progress and implements interventions to ensure
complaince with quality standards.

30 3. Manages and administers clinical and operational resources to facilitate the delivery of patient care.
Prepares and executes the assignments of OB tech, RN, Business Associates & procedural assistants
to meet ongoing patient and operational requirements and in consideration of labor & delivery budget
constraints.

Manages FTE requirements, schedules requests, shift change requests, daily assignments, and on-call
assignments to facilitate labor & delivery operations.

3 .3 Monitors ongoing patient, staff and operational activity to manage deficits to meet changing conditions.
Ensures for the ongoing procurement of supplies and equipment required for labor & delivery team
performance.

Obtains information and continually assesses patient care needs, staffing resources and operational
status to include: hospital volume, L&D volume, bed availability, patient acuity, patient wait time, supply
and equipment issues; physician needs, ancillary department concerns, customer service issues and
related patient care and operational activity.

Communicates, updates and collaborates with the labor & delivery team to develop and implement best
practices and solutions regarding hospital volume, L&D volume, bed availability, patient acuity, wait
time, supply and equipment issues, ancillary department concerns, customer service issues, and
related patient care and operational requirements.

Analyzes and evaluates labor & delivery measures, trends, hospital measures, operational processes
and related data.

Design, executes and monitors continuous improvement measures to alleviate identified barriers and
trends to support and facilitate quality patient care and operations.

3 .9 Continuously reassesses and modifies resource allocation to meet changing conditions.
3 .10 Manages and facilitates the disaster preparedness program to ensure compliance.
Designs, manages and executes routine continuous improvement projects as assigned including
projects regarding safety, operational flow, best practices for patient care, information systems,
information system user training, customer service, supplies and equipment, staffing and ancillary
department concerns.

Designs, manages and executes non-routine leaderhsip projects to facilitate patient care and
operational efficiency as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION (number of years and type required to perform the position duties):
Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. Bachelors degree in Nursing or currently enrolled in Bachelors program
EXPERIENCE (number of years and type required to meet an acceptable level of performance):
Minimum 3-5 years experience in assigned specialty services required. Progressive leadership experience desirable
with proven track record of success in program development or participation, program implementation in areas of
clinical patient care management, staff development and specialty services materials management .

 

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:
Licensed and a currently registered nurse in the State of Connecticut. All newly hired Registered Nurses must have
current BCLS certification or obtain within one month of hire.

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMAND:
Requires prolonged standing; walking; use of sight, hearing and touch; moving/lifting patients of varying weights.
