The Surgical Technologist III is a certified technician who, as a result of advanced education and in-depth clinical experience in able to demonstrate proficiency in a defined area of practice. This individual is highly motivated and self-directed and requires minimal supervision in accomplishing his/her duties and responsibilities. He/she actively contributes to the knowledge and growth of self and others and is able to assume more responsibilities outside of his/her area of expertise. Essentials duties include the following. Responsibilities

  • 1. Demonstrates patient care concepts.
    • 1.1 Consistently exceeds performance expectations of Level I and II identified under this domain.
  • 2. Demonstrates the applications of the principles of asepsis and disinfection in a knowledgeable manner in the care of supplies, instruments, equipment, and the environment.
    • 2.1 Consistently exceeds performance expectations of Level I and II identified under this domain.
  • 3. Demonstrates surgical case presentation skills.
    • 3.1 Consistently exceeds performance expectations of Level I and II identified under this domain.
  • 4. Demonstrates the role of the scrub person.
    • 4.1 Consistently exceeds performance expectations of level I and II identified under this domain.
  • 5. Demonstrates the role of the assisting circulator.
    • 5.1 Consistently exceeds performance expectations of Level I and II identified under this domain.
  • 6. Demonstrates the accountability as a health care professional.
    • 6.1 Consistently exceeds performance expectations of Level I and II identified under this domain.
  • 7. Completes non-therapeutic functions under the direction of MD, PA, APRN or RN.
    • 7.1 Remove medication(s) from the pneumatic tube system sent from the Pharmacy or Hospital Supply to the unit/patient care area.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

 

Graduation from an accredited Surgical Technician school.

 

EXPERIENCE

 

Surgical Technician experience preferred.

 

SPECIAL SKILLS

 

Must consistently exceed performance expectations when performing the duties and responsibilities defined under Level I and II and frequently exceeds expectations when performing within a defined area of practice., Demonstrates proficient practice at an advanced level on complex cases in two or more surgical specialty areas, as well as demonstrating knowledge of various procedures and associated instrumentation in all surgical areas., Independently develops and implements inservice twice per year and serves on departmental committees as co-chairperson; assists with credentialing of other staff when required., Provides written input to specialty team coordinators on performance evaluations of peers., Assists the specialty team coordinator in preparing budgets for fiscal year., Enhances professional and hospital image through participation in hospital and community outreach programs., Attains at least 24 CEU's per year, 75% of which pertain to surgical technology. AST Category I guidelines, acceptable.
